Nintendo Power ceasing publication

A clever way to close it out would be a clay Mario cover. Maybe even some other Nintendo characters made of clay.

A couple of the old things I am nostalgic about are the game ratings they used to give and the popularity charts.

A clever way to close Nintendo Power out would to keep key staff on for Mii Universe purposes. Each game page could get its own mini-review on its board. Along with statistics, such as the average ratings players gave it for Graphics & Sound, Play Control, Lasting Interest, and Fun (like the old-school rating system). The editors could choose legit pros and cons from users of the game. Also included would be total play time the game has received (overall or monthly) from gamers around the US for chart purposes.

Power charts could use those game play stats and give us a nice indicator of what's popular or underrated. The editors could also use certain comments from certain games to do a "counselor's corner" along with "classified information" for unlockables. Add new sections to allow for the Nintendo show they currently do, some previews and retro look backs, and tie it up into a free monthly mag that can be downloadable on the 3DS or U.

Otherwise, you'd never really have a reason (or ability?) to visit a board for a game you don't have. This might help expose people to other games.

The August issue is one stands now. Does that mean that theyre gonna do issues Sept, Oct, Nov and then finally Dec? Or are they just going to skip to the Dec issue for later this year?

The September one's already shipped so presumably that means they'll do October and November as well

Been subscribed since the issue with Mario Party 2 on the cover. Even if it's become less and less useful to me as time went on, I still always enjoy seeing a new issue arrive in the mail. A real shame to see my last remaining magazine subscription go down.

been a subscriber since #1 and i still have a mint copy of dragon warrior w/ box... sad to see NP go... every time i flip through the pages of the older mags i'm pretty much overcome by memories - i carried a NP mag to many major events in my childhood - whether it was school or family gatherings or going to asia in the 90s and playing cricket and reading the mag for the entire summer...

hope nintendo does something special for all the folks who've been subscribing since the beginning... like maybe a free wii U or something ;-)

Sorry for the little bump, but my last issue shipped (was going to renew until....yeah), and I'm flipping through the sections and realized how much I'll miss Power Profiles and the downloads section, two sections that were a must read. I mean, is there anyone left covering every single downloadable WiiWare/DSiWare/eShop titles--even the bad ones?

I wonder if I can still renew to get the last 3 issues...

Nintendo has nothing to do with the magazine now. ;-)

Haha, I misunderstood this at first and thought this was the LAST issue... realized what you meant a moment later. Took me by surprise because I hadn't really flipped through it yet. I look forward to the final issue, but man, I'm going to miss this magazine. I remember wanting to subscribe when I was young, but it took a couple of years for my parents to finally get it for me. If I remember correctly the first issue I got was the DKC3 issue, and the gift I received was a VHS tape of Star Fox 64 stuff, which I thought was soo amazing. This may have actually been the gift I got when resubscribing the next year, I can't remember, but I watched that VHS tape a lot.

edit: just realized that must have been about 15+ years ago ... the memories ;_; Why did I go and throw all my old magazines out in high school? I almost didn't because I thought one day I'd want to re-read them again for the nostalgia, but they had just been sitting there collecting dust, so I tossed them... what a fool I was. NP was how I first found out about Harvest Moon on the SNES... read that article a billion times as a kid and went on to fall in love with the series for many years. (The first forum I ever joined was a Harvest Moon forum). Also, they had a big article on Survival Kids for the GB, and that sole issue was the reason I got into art. I really liked the art as a kid, so I tried to draw all the characters by tracing, and then without tracing, and then I just kept on drawing for years and years to come. I really wish I still had that issue.. I'd probably pay a fair chunk of change for it if necessary, but I have no clue how to find out what issue it was in.

I'm sad but also sort of glad they're ending. I haven't read them in a few years but I kept subscribing because I've been a member from the beginning. Started with a gift from my dad with the first one when I only looked at pictures. Have two of the Fun Club newsletters as well. Guess I should try to get the rest again someday. The late number 90's were some of my favorite right when the N64 came out. I remember looking at the screenshots of Mario's face from SM64 and Pilot Wings 64 for weeks.

Haha, yeah! I just looked at a list of all the NP covers and it was a trip man. I stopped subscribing to them around '00 - '02, but two years ago Amazon had a sub for 5 bucks, and I enjoyed getting it again. It wasn't that great, but it wasn't bad. It's kind of sad to see it go, but I really see it more as a part of my childhood, so it feels appropriate.

Good times

Yeah I loved those. They were what really got me into Pokemon. I remember thinking the whole thing looked pretty stupid...but then I started reading through the Pokemon Power issues and became slowly interested, and ultimately addicted.

Yep, this is how I got into Pokemon. I flipped through the second Pokemon Power out of curiosity and I was instantly hooked.

I don't read it anymore, but it was always nice to know that there was a generation of kids that still felt excitement when flipping through the pages to find their favorite game have a blowout cover story, or check the upcoming release dates for possible new games you had never heard of, or the editorials that were heartfelt and always insightful. Sure, you can get all that online, but there's something about flipping a page and exploring its mysterious contents that can get a kid hyped. Sadly, at least for Nintendo fans, that will come to an end. :(

Nostalgic, lengthy blog post ahoy, small fry!

I’ll admit–when I heard Nintendo Power was coming to an end, I was bummed out. To date, it’s still the only magazine I’ve ever had a subscription to…and what a subscription indeed (I’ve pretty much had one come in every month since 1998)! Even today, in the age of the internet, I still greatly enjoy reading the magazine–Mr. T jokes and all–because it’s less about cutting-edge news and more about simply being entertained. I like their behind-the-scenes interviews with people like Sakurai and Michael Ancel (to name a couple recent ones), I like features like their ranking of the top Mario games (although Super Mario Bros. 1 should’ve been at the top), I even like their reviews. There’s no doubt that I’m going to miss the fun of reading a fresh Nintendo Power each month, and I hope that sentiment has been made clear enough in today’s comic.

So, Howard and Nester. For you younger fans, those of you who don’t dwell in the US, and/or those unfamiliar with NP, Howard and Nester were basically Nintendo Power’s mascots and the star of their own comic strip in the magazine (which ran for a handful of years). Howard was based on Howard Phillips, the president of Nintendo’s Fun Club and a renowned “game master,” while Nester was a fictional character–a smug hotshot who secretly needed Howard’s tips to get through most Nintendo games (although he’d never admit that). And while Howard Phillips left Nintendo and NP awhile ago, Nester stuck around a bit longer and even was featured in a couple of games: Nester’s Funky Bowling for the Virtual Boy, and as a playable character (albeit one named “Lark”) in PilotWings 64. Nester did cameo in a couple later issues–once as a college kid and later as a dad. But I thought going back to the basics for this tribute would be best, as this is how most of us remember him.

That’s your brief history lesson for today, but basically, I thought that making a final farewell strip to these two characters would be a nice way to send them off and pay tribute to all the entertainment Nintendo Power has given me. At the risk of sounding geeky, it was actually a little cathartic to work on this comic, and I tried hard to replicate the original strips’ art style (which is deceptively difficult to do!).

So thank you to Howard, Nester, and all the talented people at Nintendo of America, Future US Inc, and anyone who’s worked on Nintendo Power over the past 24 years. After all, it’s Nintendo Power that introduced me to EarthBound. Your magazine brought lots of fun over the years, and I look forward to the final issue this December!

Ah you mean Nintendo Power didn't actually do that? For some reason, that makes me more sad. Probably because Nintendo Power won't have a tribute anything close to that. That should be in the final magazine.

So, the newest Nintendo Power issue came with a letter from Reggie and Chris Slate (editor in chief) about the end of the magazine and how the last issue is the December one.

I feel so saddened, and I only had the magazine for ~2 years! :'(

Here's hoping it can come back digitally, as unlikely as it may be. Man... I'm gonna miss it.

Pokemon guides were the best, and were a big part of my entry into the series. Also enjoyed all the posters and Nintendo content that were usually in them, thank you, Nintendo Power.

I'm so mad that my subscription expired in August and I only realized it after they announced they were closing and stopped taking subscriptions. I've been a subscriber since day one and now I'm missing the last three issues. :(

I'm framing that letter I got today. It seriously brings back some strong memories and brings a tear to my eye.

Look at my emoticon and feel my pain

Actually, if you reorder now, they'll refund you for the extra issues in December.

It would be nice if they came out with a hardcover retrospective book in the future. Something big with tons of content (like a meaty Pixar art book). The History of Nintendo Power has a nice ring to it!

Or maybe I'm hoping that the last issue is a hardcover book. :(

I started with issue 124 with Jet Force Gemini on the cover. Even got one of my letters published. I'll really miss NP. It's kind of crazy how time and ways of getting information out has changed so much in so little tie.

I shudder to think what is going to happen with my current sub. I don't want a golf magazine, or anything not related to games. I know my $$$$$ is gone, but that is damn shame. I had over 7 issues left too.

They're refunding you.

Because INTERNET.

I have every issue of NP on a shelf; maybe someday I'll take a picture of the full spine art and post it in this thread. Subscriber since issue 1...

As someone who grew up around the newspaper industry I will always have a fond place in my heart for print media. No matter who it is it's a sad day when I hear about another magaine or newspaper closing shop.

I used to love when they did the character art on the spine. I wish they had continued that. It totally bummed me out when they reprinted to the same Mario frame twice though.

I first subscribed around issue 85. I had a NP subscription card that was a few years old from one of my cartridge boxes (I used to keep them pristine... then got rid of them all, dammit), but I wanted the gift on it so I sent it in to see if I'd get it :p I can't even remember what it was anymore ...didn't of course, had to settle for whatever they were giving away currently.

GAF, where can I buy the latest Nintendo Power (October 2012)? My subscription ran out last month and I'm having a hard time finding them in grocery store newsstands and Future.com doesn't stock it yet for some reason.

Wait, would Gamestop have them? For some reason I always think they only stock issues of Game Informer...

Could check Barnes and Noble since they usually have some.

Just for the record, today was the final day of Nintendo Power. We finished up the final issue and shipped it off. The final issue (#285, December 2012) should be hitting newsstands on December 11, so please look forward to it (subscribers will likely get it earlier).

There is some pretty outstanding stuff in the issue that we're very proud of. We think that it's a suitable end for the magazine's 24 year run. Man, I can't wait for people to see it.

By the by, the penultimate issue should be at stores now. Look for a yellow cover with a montage of Wii U games on it. That issue also comes with a free pack of Series 2 Kid Icarus AR cards. They're random packs, so buy multiple copies!

Final issue bigger than other issues or same page count?

I just got an issue in the mail, though Shantae was on the cover. Subscriber-only? Have loved and subscribed since Issue 1; thank you for all that you and the team did. Always been a big part of my life, got me through many trying times. Y'all should stick together and form some sort of Nintendo fansite if you can still stomach covering the company!
