WiiU - Undercooked and rushed to the market?

In software you always want to release early and release often. Even if it doesn't have all the features people can use and enjoy what is there, you can get more feedback and make it better faster. Unless there are critical flaws like known crashes, uncaught errors (not little performance/UI things and some bugs obviously will not get caught) it's better to be out in the wild. There's a reason agile development is popular in software.

The fact that Nintendo actively subscribes is a big step forward. It means things will get better rather than being painted into a corner the way they did with Wii's design.

Pretty sure 2-5 is the advised time by Nintendo, depending on settings.

WTF? Does the tablet have a charging wire with it, or do you actually have to dock it to charge? If you have to dock it, that's horrible. How many people actually get immersed in a game and then stop after only two hours each time? Five is not as bad, but it's still pretty weak.

An external mains charger is included with the console, you'll be able to keep the controller plugged in at all times (I don't know why I would use the charging dock, seems superfluous). That's why battery capabilities won't be a limiting factor to me.

Well that's a relief. Hopefully it will be USB like the other systems, so you can use a USB extension if the cord is not long enough.

The Deluxe set has a cradle, you can always use the charger.

posting from the wiiu now. why do people say the browser is slower? it seems faster than the ipad 2 and 3. neogaf loads up super fast on the u. editing posts and selecting text are easier and faster too.

The Xbox 360 launch was marked by the RROD which resulted in Microsoft writing off $1 billion.

The PS3 launch (and its 599 USD price point) was such a failure that it permanently displaced Sony's standing in the video game industry.

Let's try to keep things in prospective here.
As I put things into perspective I notice that the Wii U has an abnormally high price point for a console that effectively has 7 year old technology under the hood and could also very well displace its manufacturer's standing in the industry.

It's parts from 2007-2010. Don't make over exaggerate, please.

iPad 3 is much faster. As is the Mini. It's not terrible on Wii U, but I'd never put it in the same class speed-wise as the iPad 2,3,4 or Mini.

hoof, wow a lot has happened since Wii U has launched. I miss all the fun. Thankfully got home a little early today and can comment before I head back out.

I think all the OS problems are amusing considering the debate I was engaged in only a week or so ago wherein people told me the reason Nintendo was being so secretive is because they have a "big secret" in their OS they didn't want their competitors to know about and that, of course, it's totally natural they would have the superior OS, why am I being so pessimistic, nyah!

Focus on cuteness over functionality leads to this sort of thing, naturally. But what also leads to this sort of thing is being nearly a full decade behind your competitors. Nintendo isn't in the weeds for these sort of things like its competitors are, they'd have their pulse closer to the heart of functional OS design than Nintendo would - and even Microsoft's OS is a bloated overdesigned wreck that is far too slow for its own good.

But man that seems like THE FUTURE compared to the ninety trillion seconds in takes to load any option from the Wii U Hub Menu, eh. But the Mii's! And comically overpoliced messages! Yaaay! Good times, good times.

Yeah, seems like a real disaster. I don't think Nintendo has any idea what they're doing with hardware anymore.

But hey, didn't you just enter rehab? Did you already finish? I don't know a ton about the system but good on you if you did. Pretty impressive since I thought it typically takes months or something.

Not sure how I feel about the Wii U...

One thing I have to say, though, is that Nintendo in my opinion really stepped up to the plate with the 3DS. I bought it a few months after it came out and, while it had some issues at first, it's now perhaps my fastest growing system I've ever owned. That's why I'm optimistic about the Wii U's future, although I'm probably not going to buy one till next year, probably around the summer when more games are out and every-thing's patched up.

i have all three atm. ipad 2 is actually slightly faster than 3, and the wiiu usually displays the page first but finishes last, perhaps thats what gives the appearance that it's faster. the speed isn't that much different . the sites i tested: funny pics thread, engadget, nytimes, cnet.

The one thing that is good here is that all of the day 1 problems appear to be fixable through updates. Nintendo released updates in the past to the 3Ds that vastly improved OS speed and functionality, and I expect the same here, hopefully before Christmas. If there were smart, they would also include an Installation CD for the online features.

Launch Wii's also got bricked if anything happened during the first update. Heck, I had to send it to Nontendo for this.

It is inexcusable but until customers punish them for this hubris nothing will happen.

Under the hood doesn't include the price of tablet.

Love this thread, it's either WiiU is doomed and pure shit, to Nintendo can do no wrong. It's a shame that the OS is as slow and non-functional as it is at launch. But to be fair in a couple of months, I don't see it being an issue.

What I do see being an issue are the bonehead moves that Nintendo made in regards to its online. The first one being the fact that IDs are tied to the console, and that Wii shop purchases are still tied down as well. There is simply no excuse for that, flat out. You would have to go out of your way to decide that using one account on multiple systems would be disallowed, and I have NO idea what they were thinking.

I think the problems that exist with the WiiU are a product of Nintendo's incredibly insular culture. They decide what works for them, and everyone else be damned. They could have looked at other online services, and how they function but have decided not to, they could have done basic things like let the gamepad stream Wii content as well, but decided not to. They seem to actively refuse to take cues from their competitors. PSN sucked when it launched but as it took from XBL it became better and better until it's probably the best service out there. Nintendo has had 6 years to formulate a good online user experience, and I'm still waiting.

Now for those bitching about the ports, I'm honestly not surprised, especially when it looks like the WiiU is marginally more powerful than it's competitors at best. The fact is ports not made with a system in mind from the beginning generally suck balls, and this is the case here. What Nintendo needed was a showcase game of what the system could do, but they simply don't have one, and until they do, the albatross of the WiiU not being technically powerful is going to be around their necks.

You can say what you want about Wii U, but one thing it ain't - rushed to the market. The device existed with near final silicon and hardware a year and a half before shipping. Hell, it might have been taped out then already. In the games industry, that's unheard of.

How they couldn't get the FW and online infrastructure done and debugged in those 1.5 years leading up to launch truly boggles the mind.

I think thats better, more surprises, less waiting.

until you actually want to play it.

Some of these issues can't be too surprising right? Nintendo has been slapping us in the face with some of their glaring problems for years. I'm still upset at them for abandoning the Wii for the last two years. There was no way I was going to pick this console up at launch based on that.

Also, I have yet to see a Wii U commercial. Not one. I've seen ads for the Microsoft Store for Christ's Sake advertising the xbox/kinect bundle, I didn't even know that store existed. It's like those fucking Golden Corral commercials.....where the fuck are they? They keep showing them in Vegas and I have no idea. We have plenty of buffets here already.

For what? Unless the hardware starts breaking down, nothing will be done. Hell they didn't recall after 3DS scratchgate, so nothing will be done for a couple of OS issues.

Cause scratchgate wasn't a big deal. For most systems it barely touched the screen and just left a evaporation mark, which people bitched and moaned about and that's why Amazon got in the shitter.

Wow. So are there any positive reviews/impressions for this thing? You can't blame us for all the doom and gloom when all of the discussion is about the underpowered hardware/glitchy OS/janky ports.

Definitely get the sense that it was rushed.

It's annoying because the Wii U has so many interesting aspects to it but there are so many small things that could make it better. I imagine firmware updates could only fix some of those problems.

It also runs a lot slower than I expected. I always thought that Nintendo was all about not making people wait.

And from the issues I'm reading neither is most of this. Or at least nothing that can't be solved with a patch. Even MS didn't do a recall of the RROD 360s.

It seems Nintendo pleased the casual gamer/user again and its mostly just the hardcore gamers/reviewers that are pissed off again.

- The family and friend gatherings to show off the system seem to be very positive.
- ZombiU is very well received.
- The browser is excellent.
- CoD BlOps has some very favorable impressions.
- TTT is fun.
- Everyone loves Nintendoland and NSMBU..
etc.

There is a lot of good out there if you want to look for it. It's easy to find the bad stuff on GAF.

RROD was not a problem at launch.

There must be a network issue going on here..

If it's hanging on an asynchronous process such as network access when just loading the settings app then it's not just broken, it's incredibly poor design.

Either that or the whole OS is running on a single thread and suffers from bad design, I'll be generous and assume it's the former.

Original Post updated with crucial info about NNIDS being locked forever with the console; Nintendo Support is unable to do any kind of migration work with purchases. Please be advised when making purchases on the Nintendo Network

That sucks. I use to be a fervent Nintendo fan but it sounds like quality control has gone down a lot from GCN days. The online transition also sounds rough for Nintendo.

Hope for all the parties involved that everything will be fixed up.

WTH is this? RROD pretty much happened immediately. Call it the launch window if you will, but it happened right off the bat in some cases.

The incidence of RRoD increased with the amount of time the system was used. A tiny fraction may have observed it from the get go, but that number got larger and larger until they basically switched to the 3rd or 4th motherboard design. During this time the fraction of users who experienced the issue was growing and the overall install base itself was expanding.

As far as MS was concerned, it was ignorable and unfortunate for the first year plus, but eventually it got so bad that it had to be addressed/
