Ya I am just wondering how this came up? I keep looking back and am not seeing anything indicating there would be a reason to assume something was amended. You know what I mean? It just seems odd to even bring up. But I may be missing it. Lots of posts of excited peeps!

Mainly this part:

"The release plan for the Destiny Games ("Release Plan") is current comprised of four (4) major retail Destiny Game releases tentatively scheduled for the Fall of 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2019 and four (4) Comet releases following each Destiny Game release tentatively scheduled for the Fall of 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020."

"As described in the Native Release Plan, Destiny Game #1, along with any related DLC Releases as well as Comet #1, shall be initially developed by Licensor to operate on and be compatible with the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console ("Xbox 360") and the next successor console platform released by Microsoft configured for both the NTSC and PAL television/video system standards ("Xbox 720"). The parties acknowledge and agree that the budget set forth in the Payment Schedule set forth on Exhibit E attached hereto is scoped to delivery of only the Xbox 360 SKU (plus content pipeline) for Destiny Game #1. The parties also currently contemplate the development and commercial release of Destiny Game #1 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system ("PS3) in Fall of 2014, subject to the parties hereto conducting a joint technical feasibility analysis that reasonably establishes to the parties' mutual satisfaction that Desinty Game #1 is able to be developed for the PS3 at a quality and feature parity to the Xbox 360 version of Destiny Game #1 (the Xbox 360, the Xbox 720 and the PS3 are collectively referred to herein as the "Destiny Game #1 Platforms")."

That suggests they'd be a year apart, but then it wouldn't make sense to include the PlayStation 3 in the same marketing materials.

They are awesome until you grow up, get a life and thus can't expend the immense time needed to make them viable.

...A huge portion of MMO players are adults with jobs and lives. What you're saying hasn't been true for a long time now.

Beyond that, Destiny is probably not going to be an "MMO" in the sense of WoW and its imitators.

After talking to a friend at bungie, he said they're not calling it an MMO. And now that i think of it, no one from bungie has called it an MMO either.
it has a persistant online, and a multiplayer focus, but not an mmo. Perhaps its more like guildwars, where there's some questing mechanic or something.

Yes, I'm calling it that since the contract does, even though I suspect it's not a traditional one:

If it's straight up MMO, i'll be a little disappointed. I've never been one for MMO's, but from what i've seen and read so far this game looks really interesting. I can see it panning out well.

Also, has there ever been a successful MMOFPS besides Shadowrun?

I remember thinking Huxley was going to be pretty cool ages ago, but I have no idea what ever became of it.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I'm not sure Shadowrun was an MMO.

even the contract says "massive multiplayer styled." But the description again reads more like guildwars.

Actually, it seems like they're taking the concept they developed in odst and pushing it. (and considering odst was the first game to bring up destiny it would make sense)

A perisitant online hub world with instanced missions.

I understand now thanks! I read that as, 2014 or not at all due to technical issues. But I think it can go either way for sure. Thanks. I couldn't figure out where all the hypothesizing was coming from.
Though, in the end I will be getting this for a next gen system for sure. Though I would obviously have more people to play with on a 360 seeing this up and running on a new system just sounds awesome!

I have a feeling that it's not. I mean, that might be the only way it can really be described right now. I want to believe that this is something that we don't quite have a genre for yet.

I have to get back and try this. My 6 hours ended up watching dudes with tanks drive over spawn points. It was pretty terrible. But I hear its awesome enough that I am going to give it another go!

I second your no!

TotalBiscuit will not shut up about it. At least it's free.

Oh, and it's dangerous to go alone. Take this.

Here were their designs for example, when Sega and Platinum were still considering how the character would look:

The top middle one seems the closest to what they ended up with.

I added it to the OP as well a little while back.

All of these look amazing. They should have gone with one of these. Lol

I hope that it's a genre that hasn't been exposed yet. Personally, if there's anything that I have to "pay to play" online in addition to costs of Xbox Live, that's a turn off for me. Microtransactioins might be the other way to go.

But we're blindly speculating right now. We don't even know anything about this surprise. The next couple months are going to be exciting.

Adults with jobs who don't do shit with their kids, abandon family lives and blow off work for a game. (if they wish to remain "viable" in the game or make the most of the game)

What I'm saying is true, and has been true for a long time now.

you can play them like any other game. With this logic then playing any game apply's to the same thing that you said.

If you think this you don't understand how MMOs work. Nothing about what I said applies to every game.

To "make the most" of an MMO you have to dump massive amounts of time to them, sometimes (typically always) you even have to schedule your life around them.

Other games do not require this amount of commitment unless you're a pro gamer.

to make the most of an mmo you need to be social, thats all. You don't need to spend extra amounts of time. MMO, as an adjective, is about the population and scale, it's not about commitment and time required.

You sound like you've got a chip on your shoulder, because yeah, the bolded exists and makes up a good portion of most MMOs' populations.

Your basing this on what? Statistics or anecdotal evidence?

This looks good! I want more space opera like Halo and Mass Effect and that looks right up there with them.

But not every MMO is like that or like WoW..

Borderlands, Guild Wars and Demon Souls are also kind of MMOs and don't really fit into your description, we should be careful with our judgement about the MMO part till we know the real aspects of it.

The "MMO = Infinite life-consuming grindfest" assumption is a poor one, especially when one considers how modern multiplayer shooters have the exact same Skinner box design with none of the stigma because they're broken up into matches and don't have a fantasy setting.

Engaging end game content.

No, to make the most of an MMO you need to devote a shitload of time into it, or you won't ever see all the content.

You sound like you've got a chip on your shoulder, because yeah, the bolded exists and makes up a good portion of most MMOs' populations.

Chip on my shoulder? I think you're seeing what you want to see.

No, those are not like MMOs at all.

Guild Wars is the closest and it's more akin to a "large scale" diablo.

The "MMO = Infinite life-consuming grindfest" assumption is a poor one, especially when one considers how modern multiplayer shooters have the exact same Skinner box design with none of the stigma because they're broken up into matches and don't have a fantasy setting.

The problem with this "view" of yours is that "end game content" isn't restricted in FPSs that you don't dump a load of time/commitment into. MMOs on the other hand...
