Nintendo Direct 2012.12.5 - Dec. 5th, 6AM EST (JP), 12 PM EST (NA), 5PM GMT

If Wii U was getting 9/10 of the big releases for PS3/360 than few would complain... but as it is we are missing titles like Bio.Infinite, Tomb Raider, South Park, Splinter Cell, etc.
Pretty much this.. hopefully by early next year we will have some decent third party support confirmed

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
The lack of W101 is sad :( in all directs

They are probably having touble getting it to run on that upgraded broadway CPU, so now they're reworking the game into a new title, "The Mediocre 50".

Hm. Mostly western stuff. I'm not the least bit shocked, honestly.

I'm expecting this console to be mostly Nintendoey goodness, with the occasional Japanese gem here and there.

people always forget that we get NDirects every 2 weeks or so, and people always have FAR too lofty expectations for each and every single one.

don't change GAF

The weird thing is that at least half the games you mentioned are seemingly coming. They simply don't get announced for some completely unthinkable reason. I really don't get it.

Huh? Which ones? I seemed to have missed the news.

Sounds like it was a crummy show. Unsurprising. Also sounds like NoE had a far superior showing (Picross, WL3, months instead of Q1, Q2). Also unsurprising.

Ugh. WiiU droughts ahoy... won't be getting anything new until Rayman.

are people forgetting that the Runner 2 definitive version will be on WiiU, and will hit in Jan most likely? Do you people honestly believe you will find NOTHING to play on your WiiU until Rayman in Feb?

smh

Shibata said that 2013 will be the year of Luigi, and that "Luigi's Mansion 2" for 3DS is only the beginning...

So...could there be a BIG Wii-U title featuring Luigi in the works?

Is that definite? There's no release date on the runner 2 site. As far as I can see anyway.

Nintendo just needs to stop having these Directs. They never have enough content to warrent even doing them. All I was looking for was a solid Animal Crossing release date and a sliver of hope they would say something about DQX.

The only solid thing they confirmed was the Fire Emblem release date and they had a few new videos. If these are going to be that barren of actual announcements they should just put the videos up on youtube and just tell news outlets when Fire Emblem is coming out. These things just highlight how little they have coming out.

What's so "definitive" about Runner 2 on WiiU? It's just a runner game...

yeah, pretty much.

what really sucks is they used to have their october/fall stuff where they'd announce new things because they wouldn't do it at e3, and they haven't even done that. this reminds me of the vita where e3 didn't materialize and then tgs didn't either.

WiiU lineup is horrid, goddamn. I never expected them to hold their BS launch window promise, but this is worse than I've imagined. Of all games, some delayed Wii Pikmin has to fill the gaps in summer... wow.
If E3 isn't amazing, this console can be considered subpar.
It is already subpar. Hope springs eternal, though.

I don't mind if Nintendo Directs a light on announcements, but I would like them to be a bit more focused and at least informative. Like, if you're showing a game that's been shown before, maybe show something new? Or talk about hardware features, or stuff Nintendo intends to address in patches.

It's when the Directs are recycling content that they become obscenely boring. I don't think they should ever be considered a platform for major announcements, and instead fan-specific insight into titles along with release dates, but there's a point where you're just not feeding viewers anything valuable at all.

Like this Luigi's Mansion 2 shit again. Same stuff. Similar footage. No announcements. No new content. Not even a concrete date. "This vague window, kinda this month maybe!". We know that. We've known it for months. We've known because the game has been routinely delayed since it was announced a year and a half ago. Like, Pikmin 3 I can understand, because we saw a new build and we hadn't had confirmation of the (obvious) launch window slip, but we really don't need to have the same titles continually milked with no substance.

EDIT: Similar things could be said about Lego City Undercover. I'm not overly interested in it, but why not dedicate a bit more time to the title and its features if it is indeed due so soon? Show some narrated, seamless footage of gameplay to give people an idea of what the game can offer. Spend Nintendo Direct time doing that kinda stuff if you don't have announcements to make.

Besides the neat Wii U apps, there was not a single Wii U game that I was interested in. I feel like this was made before the previous directs or something. There is less info here than in previous ones, almost like they realized how much they overpromised that they scaled things back this time.

I just do not understand why they don't at least update us on Animal Crossing, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, or a host of other games, they have mentioned before but were mum about this time. They spent like 10 minutes on free DLC for a game that is already out (Ninja Gaiden).

Although, I enjoyed the release date announcements (Fire Emblem coming much earlier than I thought), I was very disappointed by this. No Wii U virtual console, no TVii....ugh....

Nintendo failed to convince me that the Wii U will have sufficient quantity and quality to justify a purchase when compared to my existing backlog and upcoming games on current-gen consoles. Owners shouldn't have to scramble to find something to play.

This is Nintendo being Nintendo. As in, keeping their mouths shut on anything that isn't already announced or coming out in the immediate future. Like I said on my list:

The Wonderful 101 - Developed by Platinum, partnered with Nintendo
Pikmin 3 - Internally developed at Nintendo
Lego City Undercover - Developed by TT Fusion, partnered with Nintendo
Game & Wario - Developed by Intelligent Systems, subsidiary of Nintendo
Wii Fit U - Developed internally at Nintendo
Sing Party - Developed by FreeStyleGames, partnered with Nintendo, and effectively finished
Fire Emblem: Awakening - Developed by Intelligent Systems, subsidiary of Nintendo, effectively finished sans language localisation
Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon - Developed by Next Level Games, partnered with Nintendo
Animal Crossing: New Lea - Developed internally at Nintendo, effectively finished sans language localisation
Brain Age: Concentration Training - Developed internally at Nintendo, effectively finished sans language localisation

There is an absolutely ridiculous quantity of unaccounted Nintendo production the company refuses to talk about right now. We basically have no idea what 90% of the company, in its entirety, is working on for both the 3DS and Wii U.

It boils down to the inept leadership and marketing team at NOA. I'm amazed they are able to do anything at all.

The Nintendo directs are exhausting because they are so frequent and so devoid of any real informative content, like you say.

I don't think NOA knows what to do with Nintendo Direct and they don't care.

This is the current line-up of software for the Wii U and 3DS for Q1/Q2. I know Nintendo likes to shit on their software these days, but I'm expecting an onslaught of new shit at E3. Like, fucking tons. Because they've basically got massive holes at this point.

I'm wondering if that was Nintendo's plan all along. Do the bare minimum at an E3 where they know the competitors have nothing to announce, then open the floodgates at E3 2013 to counter the new hardware announcements.

i must of been watching a different nintendo direct from you guys because i got new info on stuff on a lot of games as well as creating hype for future releases.

i don't think it was nintendo's intention to promote only new games.

My haul...

Wii U
LEGO City Undercover (for the wife)

3DS
Fire Emblem: Awakening (for me)
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (for me)
Brain Age: Concentration Training (for both)

Nintendo won't even talk about 3rd party ports we pretty much know are coming for some completely asinine reason. I have absolutely no idea what's going on anymore.

I think they are being careful not to repeat what happened during the 3ds' first E3...they announced pretty much everything they could and we're still waiting for some of it.

Personally I prefer their original 3ds approach. I hate only knowing about games that are less than 6 months away...

Yes, yes, and yes. Also - I think it'd be better if Nintendo could do a better job of managing expectations. Nintendo Directs have been so all over the place that you have no idea what you're going to get. They're randomly announced, which doesn't help at all - I mean, the idea that Nintendo wants to make an announcement RIGHT NOW carries an implicit message that hey, Nintendo's got something important to say!

Combined with the two big 3DS and WiiU firmware updates, you've got a recipe for a PR disaster. A completely avoidable one! Why doesn't Nintendo announce exactly what they're going to cover in the Nintendo Direct. If you're not going to announce any new titles, you need to say that - you're not fishing for hits, you're trying to inform your audience and get them excited about what you are advertising. If the audience is pissed off because they expected bombs to be dropped, you are hurting the titles you are trying to promote. If what you're actually showing isn't going to attract viewers, rethink why you are showing it.

Ideally I'd like to see the Nintendo branches coordinate weekly Nintendo Directs. Mid-week, announce who will be talking about what. End of week, release Nintendo Direct. Feature first-, second-, and third-party developers in addition to your executives. Show what's coming out soon and ALSO tease long-term stuff to keep people excited about the system they've invested a lot of money in. And stop pretending we live in a world where the Pacific ocean keeps Americans from knowing what's going on in Japan and the Atlantic ocean keeps Americans from knowing what's going on in Europe. Seriously, it's ridiculous they don't have simultaneous launches for all of their products. Hire some more damn translators. Make it happen. You know why people are happy to see Fire Emblem release NoA? Because you're so useless no one knows if you'll even release first-party titles to your largest market. New releases are better than new-to-America releases. Don't be NBC with "If you didn't see it before, it's new to you."

Quick edit: As my proposal for weekly Nintendo Directs shows, I don't think the problem with Nintendo Directs is that they're too frequent, just that they're not informative enough. Consider that the DS released in 2004, and the Wii in 2006, and between the two of them they have more than 2000 games released for them. That's more than 142 titles a year, or almost 3 a week. I think Nintendo can find the material to work with between the 3DS, Wii U, eShop, and Virtual Console. Heck, do a Nintendo Direct on TreeHouse, show how you localize games!

I love ND. They are fantastic and short looks at games that we know about. Why would you want Nintendo to stop that?

Oh well...Pikmin 3 looks fantastic. Next year is going to be awesome.

So the only concrete date we got was Fire Emblem? Not even Luigi's Mansion, a game we've known about since E3 2011?

And Pikmin 3 is coming Q2 2013?!?

THIS FUCKING COMPANY

I mean, I expected the usual post launch drought for a Nintendo console, but fuck. It sounds like we won't have anything to play on Wii U in January or February. They throw around "early 2013" a lot, but this is the same company who refers to a "launch window" as the 6 months following launch.

I don't know. Wii U is looking real shitty right now. I was really expecting Pikmin 3 in January or February. Now there's nothing.

I find it wild that there isn't a single game they talked about that I want, but I'm still totally cool with owning these systems. It's not like they'll remain gameless forever. I know 4 titles I want on my 3DS in the future. That's as many as I have PS3 games total. And the Wii U is still a new system, but it's going to have 2 Hideki Kamiya games and Monster Hunter? Okay, so I have to be a little patient. That's okay with me if I get the gold in the end.

Constant delays? Isn't the only officially delayed title so far Pikmin 3, and only by one quarter?

Unfortunately it means no more Nintendo Wii U games for at least another 4 months from now - and that's what most of us bought the console for. Personally, I was expecting Pikmin 3 in Q1 and then hoping they had something else up their sleeves for Q2.

I saw a lot of games I'm interested in and I still don't know any dates.

Are they going to do one at the end of this month or in January? Because this was some vague stuff.

I bet Nintendo is saving all their big announcements for e3 to counter the new console unveils.

So they are probably using release dates/localizations/small game announcements sparingly so they have content for each ND.
