Sonic 4 Episode 1's boss music is still much better than Episode 2.

(If referring to VS Robotnik) I have to agree but only because Ep 2's boss theme is literally just the remix of the pinch thing. ...What were they thinking? I don't want to hear a 20 second loop song for a 5 minute boss fight, ugh.

Metal Sonic's boss theme trumps both though.

EDIT: I sort of like the final boss theme of Episode 2... though it didn't sound much of a final boss theme.

Isnt the boss music in Sonic 4 ep 1/2 just remix of the Sonic 3D blast boss theme that was unused?

Only the first phase of the boss theme in Ep 1 is a remix of that. The pinch theme in Ep 1 is original and got remixed as the main boss theme in Ep 2. Why? I don't know.

Oh yes. You do get a few less-good ones like the overly-goofy Spring Stadium 2 (although the Genesis version's tracks for this zone were almost wholly unmemorable, personally, and I love the Saturn version's Act 1 in comparison) or Volcano Valley (which isn't bad, it's just that, in this one case, the Genesis version's better), as the soundtrack runs the gamut in terms of genres, but it's easily one of my all-time favorite soundtracks from the series.

Other highlights include Green Grove Act 1, Diamond Dust Act 1, and Act 2, Gene Gadget Act 1, Panic Puppet Act 1, the Special Stage theme, and the great boss theme. Hell, pretty much the whole soundtrack. Not a huge fan of the credits song "You're My Hero", though.

These are pretty good. I like the clear, ambient sound this specific OST has. I'm actually surprised I didn't find about this sooner. I probably won't like the game itself, but this OST is quite stellar.

Rusty Ruins is the best, but it's almost all quality Jacques goodness. The leitmotif can get grating, though.

I had no idea Jacques did these as well or some older Sonic music (I googled it). He's really good.

I rewatched the entire series this year without remembering 98% of the show. It is indeed timeless. I wish Season 3 happened but nooooo Underground happened instead!

It's like the Pokemon Theme for me.

Adabat Night

How the fuck is this song so good.

Well shiver me timbers, yes that is quite good. Songs that are getting posted are reminding me strongly why I consider the Sonic games to have the best music out of all video game series.

I think there's a lot of one-off games that have a lot better music than any franchise, but Sonic and MegaMan as franchises are definitely high on my list.

Ok finally got my hands on Sonic Heroes and I'll give you some impressions:

AWFUL.

This game is truly awful...I don't know what you guys find about this game that makes it so great to some people.

The gameplay is AWFUL: How do you go from Sonic Adventure to this gameplay? I guess in theory it could have been a cool idea or maybe as a one off side mission/mode but I just did not like this at all. Switching to accomplsih ONE mission seems very tedious, and there was no real payoff to me.

The graphics are AWFUL: The engine they used makes this game look worse than a dreamcast game...why do the models look like a childrens cartoon? Why does everything seem so bright and preschool colored?

The music isn't that great either...I dunno I was really turned off by this game and Shadow the Hedgehog.

Well it's quite simple, we don't find it great.
There might be one or two people who think it's a rollicking good time but i'm pretty sure that's it.

I think most of my favorite pieces from Unleashed are actually the town themes. Free of the need to match a specific gameplay pace, the sound team could completely cut loose with the regional theme, and the results are just wonderful.

Or it could just be that Kumatani and Tokoi have been at this longer than Ohtani and it's that slight experience edge showing through, given how Crisis City and Rooftop Run improved between their source games and Generations.

So I was playing Sonic 1 when this happened:

I would say something, but I don't want to break my F key. >:I

I overshot my jump and landed right in the lava and scampered to get some rings; by the time I had caught up with the block it had already started sinking in the lava, and I had to go back. I only had one ring and ended up losing it right before I jumped onto that floating pillar.

Ahaha, I remember when I used to play Sonic games in an attempt to get all the rings in a stage.

People posting Unleashed BGMs in here? I fucking love Unleashed's soundtrack for various reasons that I won't get into because I'm exhausted and my brain can't put a good cohesive (read: smart) post together right now.

But I will say that I agree with Sciz in that the town themes are probably the best things on the soundtrack for the same reasons!!

Mine list would be this.

1. Sonic
2. Mega Man
3. Final Fantasy
Uhm... Sonic, Mega Man, Ys for me. Sonic music is usually consistent and good, same with Mega Man, and tbh, I haven't heard a lot of bad Falcom music and Ys is usually the cream of the crop.

I'd love to put Suikoden on that list, but the third album is not too much to my liking, and the second and fourth games' albums have tracks that aren't that great and the albums are inconsistent. It's a shame because GS1's soundtrack is one of my favourite soundtracks ever.

If we're gonna do the whole ranking things by quality of music...I'll go a bit further!

1. Sega
2. Square-Enix
3. Capcom

Because there are various franchises from each company I like and they're all very consistent about the quality of music.

Remember how 1990s Konami used to be super-duper awesome?

Well, Perfect Bonuses were a thing - albeit one I can't imagine too many people saw.
Maybe a few times. I focused on exploration in the older games a lot, though. Not so much now, since it's better to get things done faster.

Hahaha, the replacements for the Eggmen in Metal Sonic Generations. Can't wait for this mod
Alright, this is pretty awesome.

Almost makes me want to build a gaming PC.

What the heck am I looking at? Don't recognize this design at all.

Also, I realize they already used Neo Metal Sonic for Super Sonic, but I almost kinda wish they used... uh... whatever that big red one at the end of Chaotix was called. (It did have a name, didn't it?)

PS1 International Track and Field is amazing. That doesn't get enough recognition.
That Event Select music? The intro music?

A lot of Konami's past stuff doesn't get recognition anymore and it saddens me. They used to be so damn good. Now they're... ugh (referring to them as a company).

What the hell is a "Konami"? I don't know of any company by that name around these days that make games, maybe you were thinking of Kojima productions?

Hang on, i've gotta throw this music out here, good times even though I care not for the sport.

Oh, are we having a Konami music nostalgia love-in? Because I could go on for ages about The Lone Ranger for NES. Of all the "best games no one played" out there, it is the best and the most never played by anyone ever. And that's a shame, because it's part classic Castlevania, part Metal Gear, part Wolfenstein 3D, and all super awesome.

But yeah, the music. Start with the William Tell Overture because it's a Lone Ranger game. Oh, and check out that cover art. Shootouts, trains, exploding bridges, indians, banditos, it's got everything. Anyway, this plays over some scrolling intro text, and then the Mario 3-ish map unfolds and if its theme doesn't get you in the mood for some Wild West action nothing will. Take three steps to the west and you're greeted with the first of multiple kickass town themes. From there you might step into the general store or go hit up one of the minigames or drop by a saloon. Or you could get on with the business of progressing the plot, in which case you'll tangle with outlaws, infiltrate lairs, occasionally swap to first-person, fight more bandits, fight indians, fight the military, fight fucking ninjas I kid you not, and eventually have a shootout with/on a train.

and they also made some other cool licensed games about some turtles or something

Bah Bah is number one over all. It's even more glorious when Baby Yoshi is around. This game spits rainbows of love and happiness and I'm all for it.

BAH-BAH is nowhere near best OST, especially considering it's the same damn OST we've had for years, barring a couple of tracks.

NintendoLand, on the other hand, has a lot of really great remixes. I wouldn't call it best OST either but it's certainly better than BAH-BAH.

Hold the phone. So... no one played The Lone Ranger? Because that game was actually pretty good. And this...

Groooooaaaaaannnnn.

At least Tak Fujii's still being awesome there, except they don't like us seeing him in their prerecorded press conferences anymore because Konami misplaced its soul.

I assume the Bah-bah stuff is supposed to be facetious.

Oh it's not, I think the Bah Bah's may be a little silly at times but the soundtrack gets too much hate.

Really? I can't wait to see someone rationalize a vote for that in the SotY thread.

The 1980s-tinged relenting synth of Hotline Miami is a big fave of mine this year as well. Very fitting for this bizarre, David Lynch slasher movie atmosphere of the game
It's definitely in for a Top 3 vote from me. That soundtrack is absolute gold.

Uhm... I'm still thinking of mine. Nayuta no Kiseki's soundtrack was better than expected when I played through it, but I listened to the acoustic album more from the LE. And I dunno if I want to vote for Ys Celceta's stuff because I'm so used to the PCE version of Ys 4 and I love the music in that. Botanicula's soundtrack is really good too.

Suikoden PSP's ost is decent, but it's not Top 3 material and Tierkreis's soundtrack easily outshines it. I need to take another listen to the Labyrinth no Kanata soundtrack. Not sure what I think of Rhythm Thief's soundtrack overall yet, and I should give the ASR:T soundtrack more listens. Kid Icarus: Uprising's soundtrack is going to get another listen, but I feel like the most outstanding thing for me for that soundtrack is the assortment of composers as opposed to the music. The Last Story's soundtrack is one of Uematsu's weaker compositions which doesn't say much since he hasn't been composing anything really good lately.

I did save FF13-2's soundtrack for this year and elected not to vote for it last year. We'll see how it ends up holding up. Need to give Closure's soundtrack another listen.

There's a ton more... now I know how Nert and Ghaleon feel to an extent.

I assume the Bah-bah stuff is supposed to be facetious.
I don't think i've seen any form of sarcasm run into the floor and pierce straight through the earth quite as much as this and i've praised Sonic Blast for a cheap laugh.
I should replay Sonic Blast soon, it'll be a laugh until someone (me) gets hurt.

Oh it's not, I think the Bah Bah's may be a little silly at times but the soundtrack gets too much hate.

I do think the themes in general are sort of maligned (except the ghost house, that's just urrgh), their reuse on the other hand? that's a point that should be torn to bits and pieces.
Still i'll rock the Brawl rendition of NSMB Overworld as maximum on my music Delfino Plaza and i'll be happier for it.

Talking Soundtracks of this here year put me in for the Uprising soundtrack right now, though this year I feel as if i'm lacking a single soundtrack that really grabbed me, a whole host of really good ones mind you, just not that one definitive choice.

The Walking Dead also has a real good soundtrack, I thought. Especially Episode 5.

And the quality of Journey's kinda goes without saying for anyone who's played it.

You know what I used to like about sonic team that made them feel special when they put downloadable content for Christmas and Halloween and I wonder why they discontinued that

Every year there's a Konami E3, and I always ask myself "Why am I even excited about this?". Suodiken peaked in '99, there's no more Metroidvanias, I'm over Metal Gear games not involving Platinum Games, and Silent Hill...well....they can't even get the fuckin' HD collection of that right...

Selam
Wintry Mountain
Twilight of the Dragon River
Title Theme

Oh, I almost forgot Darksiders II's OST. Should give that a re-listen too. Edit: same with Gravity Rush's.

I wish I could vote for the Etrian Odyssey 4 soundtrack, but I refuse to because there's no FM sound/PC-88 stuff on there. Gross.

The Walking Dead also has a real good soundtrack, I thought. Especially Episode 5.

I still need to play thooooose!

Because you want to see whether or not their conference will be a complete trainwreck like the 2010 one?
