Huh? No, that's not true. Screamers 1 and 2 are DOS games and work fine in DOSBox, no issues. The only challenge is getting 3DFX mode working in Screamer 2, which does support it, but that's only because of the iffy state of DOSBox 3DFX emulation, not because of anything in the game itself.

I think I was trying to run it natively when I last tried (Which would have been '03-'04ish, I suspect).

Oooooooh. I only just now realized that "Screamer" is the international equivalent to "Bleifuss" in Germany.

Now I understand what this is all about. I'm no racing game connoisseur so my interest is low, but I remember a friend going mental about this series back in the day.
They were some of the better console-style racing games on the PC in the mid '90s, which is why the first two particularly were popular. Somehow it faded after that, and I've never actually played Screamer Rally (or the fourth game; I think there was something?), but the first two did well as console-style, Ridge Racer/Sega Rally-inspired, racing games on the PC.

They are good, but one thing to know about Screamer 2 (and the first one too, very different gameplay aside) -- it's got a LOT of catchup. It's very hard to get an actual lead, and very easy to lose after a otherwise very well-driven race if you mess up near the end. Still though, it's a good game for sure.

Ah... yeah, that probably would have been more difficult, if you were using XP.

I was trying to think of where my memories were from this game, and I finally remembered it was from the demo. Played it over and over originally because I could never find the full game.

Anyone here know whether Screamer Rally was any good? Was it even by the same guys?

There are fond memories of that 3DFX-era of driving games on PC. Motorhead, Fatal Racing, pod... all so damn good.

mcclem, did you see this post at the end of the last page (re: Screamer 2)? Tres lol :)
NO FUCKING WAY. It's no secret (maybe it is) that I've been begging for this for fucking AGES. I've been itching for it since I saw they had the first one up, but no sequel.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a post from me on this forum of me requesting it ;)

Edit: Ahahahahahahahahaha

I did notice that, yes. I think perhaps you should stop suggesting games, you're clearly dangerous. GoG doesn't have Rise of the Robots yet, and let's not risk that, eh?

Release: Screamer 2. I remember being stunned at how good it looked at the time. I also remember it being a great little racer in the Ridge Racer mould. I *also* remember it being an absolute pain to get running on anything modern, so I suspect I'll be picking it up!

Ha, I knew I had a copy of this game somewhere, but I totally forgot the series was called "Bleifuss" here in Germany. Pretty good arcade racer for it's time btw.

Tip for those who have bought pod: The game *definitely* does not run at it's proper speed by default. There's no config file (to configure a 3DFX wrapper or whatever) but one way or another, the game needs to be locked down to 30fps. Once I did that, it actually played exactly how I remember it playing :)

I paid good money for this Dynex!
As someone who LOVED Bulletstorm, is Painkiller a must play?

Eh, not really. It's a pretty cool game, and you can definitely see how the developer went from that game to making Bulletstorm, but there are just enough annoying segments in the game to hold it back from being great. If it's on sale or something, it's definitely worth trying, though.

It's $4 on GoG.com

Based on the Bulletstorm demo, Painkiller isn't really that similar -- it's a lot closer to Serious Sam than Bulletstorm. It drops all pretenses of providing anything other than straight-up, hardcore over-the-top shooting action with explosive weapons and scores of wacky enemies. Painkiller is probably my favorite FPS of all time, but the demo for Bulletstorm didn't do anything for me.

Eador: Genesis released today, a Russian take on what looks to be something somewhat similar to the HoMM formula, but much more complex looking at the screens and video. Looks a little rough around the edges (no unit animations, just sliding pieces on the battlefield), but comments claim it to be there where it counts and it promises quite the lengthy experience with over 120 hours of gameplay, amongst "Over 170 buildings, 80 spells, and 70 units available that can be used in any combination." Seems there's a modern looking sequel in the works too, for sometime 2013 most likely.

Is there a reason FTL: Faster Than Light isnt bolded on the release list?

I generally only bold stuff that is well known with a lot of acclaim (and has held up reasonably when applicable) or people post a lot of praise for it, but that one I have no excuse for for... it's definitely received both!

So what's the deal with I have no mouth and I must scream. It doesn't get much more good and classic than that.

I'm assuming its a legal issue somewhere since acclaim published and their gone now and it is based off a short novel.

Screamer 4x4
That's by a different studio, but it is a very unique and cool game. Instead of really racing, you're trying to navigate checkpoints over what often seems like impassable terrain. You have to gauge where to make your climbs and descents in order to stay on four wheels. It's way overlooked.

I have to wonder if Harlan Ellison owns the copyright to it as he seems to be selling the thing for $32 on his site. I think that's been the case for years.

It looks like they're going big on Apogee stuff, I wonder just what the licensing was like back then; it'd be fantastic to see some of their early-to-mid-nineties stuff. I want Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure!

Yup! I finished Unwritten Tales last week so i bought Critter Chronicles as soon as i saw it!
I have Primordia on pre-order from Wadjet Eye but i may double-dip and get it on GOG too.

This is not certain, but Wadjet Eye may get gog keys to give to everyone who preordered in their site.

As taken from their latest newsletter...
Wadjet Eye Newsletter said:
And as promised, if you purchased the game directly from us, you will receive a free Steam key. These keys will be delivered to you tomorrow.

Goddamn, I apologise, in my haste I misread GOG as Steam. Not quite sure how....

So GAF, sell me on the Myst series, I like PnC games but the setting for Myst is not interesting me atm. ...and should i get Real Myst? Seems the original series creators didn't like it.
Also how's Manhole? Looks interesting.

What would be the definitive version of Myst between the masterpiece edition and Real Myst?

RealMyst. Masterpiece hasn't aged well and is more confusing to navigate (by virtue of being pre-rendered slides).

The Myst series is fundamentally about exploring strange and foreign locations and figuring out how their worlds work and what happened before you got there. It does a great job making you feel immersed and entrenched in a new place with only your reasoning skills to help you find out what to do next. There are almost no other characters or inventory-based puzzles, it's just about absorbing the world around you, soaking in the glorious and intricately rendered detail, and figuring out how to make the world do what you need.

The first Myst game (or realMyst) is relatively simple (most experienced PnC players could finish it in a day or two) and kind of a neat look at different ideas (it's divided into five short Ages), but feels dated. Still, I recommend playing it as it introduces the story and how Ages work.

Riven is simply one of the best adventure games ever made and has a cohesiveness of design and purpose unparalleled in any other video game. Solving the puzzles and figuring out the world (that phrase describes a lot of the Myst series) is one of the most rewarding feelings any game has ever given me, because every puzzle just makes sense if you're observant and pay attention. Nothing is spelled out or handed over except for a simple objective given at the very beginning, but it's up to you to learn from your surroundings what you need to do and how to do it. Even though it's pre-rendered slides and animations, it's the most believable and immersive video game world I've ever seen.

This thread (not by me) explains a lot more why Riven is so great if you need more convincing.

(Oh that thread was already posted. Well more reason to read it!)

^Thanks, I'm already sold on Real Myst, Riven and Myst V, but what about Manhole and Myst Masterpiece Edition? Should I bother with masterpiece if I already got Real?
