The Phantom Pain, aka Metal Gear Solid V, Announced (360/PS3, "Moby Dick Studio")

yes, but, that's not real time. You aren't playing during that, just like a lot of that game will be. It shouldn't be the indicator of what the consoles are capable of.

It is real time. If it was a pre-rendered cutscene there would be rendering errors on some of the characters.

Pay attention to the shader errors on her eyes and then the texture error on the policeman's face.

Wow.

The majority of the beginning of this thread hated the trailer.

Then we find out its MGS, no one hates it and everyone starts to get all "OMG its incredible"

thisisneogaf.gif

We are not finding the trailer incredible, but everything surrounding it, such as Kojima trolling the entire fucking planet, Live. That's what incredible.

And people are excite for Metal Gear, because Metal Gear.

Why do you guys want this to be next gen so bad? It doesn't look any better than Ground Zeroes.

Ground Zeroes looks pretty next-gen to me. There are a few things that doesn't look so good, but that's probably just because the engine is still in the works. Rain effects, lighting and reflections looks it would be hard to pull of on these consoles though. It's not like there's an infinite supply of power.

...into Google Images and among the visually similar images (mostly delicious-looking food), there's this image from Bungie.net:

(...) Holy shit.

Not sure how much I should read into all of this, but I'm so excited to see what comes of all of this. Squeeee!!!

like i said, interactive story with some gaming aspects.

Every video game is interactive story with some gaming aspects.

On top of the train [and inside when you are running, and everywhere else] you control where she walks with a stick, you choose her moves with other buttons, and in ghost mode you have total freedom to move and interact with the world.

I don't, I'm just curious how they're going to squeeze out two games before everyone gets bored of current consoles.

Considering how bad sales have been, I'd say that's happened already.

Like others have said, Phantom Pain + Ground Zero are probably just separate chapters in MGS:V.

Real time, but no interactivity. Also, tiiiny gif.

Dude, instead of just continuing to disagree with me how about going over to youtube and watch some videos for the game. There is interactivity.

Apologizes for the tiny gif, but I didn't want to take up space.

sorry, I probably used the wrong technical term, I am no expert.

But I simply am saying that you aren't actually playing the game during that gif.

You and me have a very different view on how we can "actually play a game".

Can you control exact movements of Snake when he crouch or stands up? No, you press a button and animation plays out. Same happens here, only one button press leads to a longer success/failure animation, and from there story branches out into new gameplay scenes.

Heavy rain, Beyond Two Souls, and every other adventure games [
like "The Walking Dead", VGA GOTY that was voted by press members from industry leading websites and magazines
] are a fully fledged VIDEO GAMES, but their execution of gameplay is different than in action games. They don't need to be filled with constant twitchy action because they aim to show to the player complex stories, character developments, emotion and drama.

Like others have said, Phantom Pain + Ground Zero are probably just separate chapters in MGS:V.

That's the part I find hard to believe.
This game isn't acknowledged by Konami yet, while GZ is very public, it's weird.

Maybe they could be packaged together, like MGO and MGS4? I guess that would count.

I doubt it is zero interactivity. Though my original speculations could be off base.

You play as two characters.
The main character you control is Snake. The second character played by Sutherland is partially controllable. He has the conscious to help you but he is very much into his survival over your own, so you have to build karma with him to assist you.

You can spend small amounts of karma for assists without direct control. You can spend a lot of karma for direct control. To earn karma you can't be completely useless deadweight he is dragging around. To avoid danger on your own you have to drain stamina and adrenaline doing so though brings you closer and closer to having a hallucinatory episode making an already difficult escape extremely difficult as you have to interpret which are the real threats to avoid from the fake ones to ignore.

Besides burning this personal resource taking damage from the environment can also bring you closer to another psychedelic experience.

Encounters with any enemy is extremely dangerous. To manage these encounters requires careful management and increasing levels of skill coordination between Snake and Sutherland. Instead of working with hitpoints you build up saves. Saves are like edges in RPGs were an obvious death can be reversed in some fashion and you can do the encounter over again in a different way. Once you run out of saves the game ends and you start over from the beginning (actually this definitely won't happen but I don't have a better idea for a continue mechanic at the moment).

As you traverse through the game you are rewarded with cutscenes that tell you about how you got in the hospital and will help you speculate more about why you have to escape. More importantly each cutscene gives you clues about hallucination you can have in the game and help you better in deciphering what is a fake threat from a real one.

I still say it's a "meh" trailer, but the MGS connection makes it more intriguing as to where it all fits. There's nothing in the trailer that makes me think "MAN, I WANT TO PLAY THAT" though which is where the negativity stems from.

Just saw the 'Sandbox' gameplay from August. While it looks really impressive, I don't think it can compete with what we see in Phantom Pain.

When it was shown, the wave of negativity in the VGA thread was incredible. I mean there was a clear element there just to shit on everything VGA, but Phantom Pain was really badly received.

...and some wonder why devs are so scared to try new ips? :(

Do people really believe Kojima are making two games MGS games at once? It's pretty obvious that PP and GZ are the same game. Same time frame, same protagonist, same engine. And it's obviously MGS5.

Edit: And I think the graphics look a lot better than current gen games in both trailers.

Truth is
Ground zeroes and phantom pain do not exist.
They are the two phantoms born from fox, fox being fox engine.
Games that are never coming out, what we've seen is just tech demos/scenario for another game not mg related.
Ultimate troll.

Heh. No, I don't believe what I just wrote.

Lighting and shaders do make the graphics look beyond current gen, but that's fox engine's strenght, as demoed previously (horse in office pics). Models, IQ etc are all very much current gen.

So the British flag.
I thought maybe this takes place in a British colony or protectorate...Zanzibar, which would tie this to mg2. but Zanzibar hasn't been a protectorate since 1963 iirc..

Now that i think of it, though, In GZ trailer we see an american flag. Not the same place ?

Anyone noticed how he's on a bed talking to the doctor, but when he's looking at his arm he's lying on the floor in the same room?

Yeah. I'm 100% certain the doctor scene is really happening after he wakes up. What happens in the hallucination will be meaningful to the game as a whole no doubt.

Well what used to be Rhodesia was a British territory around the time period. When the first Shinkawa artwork from MGS5 appeared it showed a dog that a lot of people identified as a Rhodesian Ridgeback. We know Big Boss eventually makes his way to Africa.

I'll admit, I thought the trailer was really bad due to the constant questions being quickfired and how very little gameplay was shown.

But since then finding out this is in Ground Zeroes/part of MGS it's insanely intriguing. The little we've seen from Ground Zeroes looked spectacular, so if the segment in the Phantom Pain trailer is in Ground Zeroes/MGS V, that means we just saw an abstract element that could be in a future MGS.

So I wasn't home last night and reading the OP it seems this is MGS5? Is Ground Zeroes and this the same game? I tried skimming the 52 pages or so of posts but it's not very clear.

By incredible you mean incredibly small. The vast majority of reactions were people saying what am I watching or just simply repeating what they were watching. ("Flaming unicorn + flaming whale = day 1" was my fav response)

The number of people who said they hated or loved the trailer was small and split evenly.

You can reread the thread if you like and see how off you are.

It's honestly still a terribly cut trailer either way
No.

The other complaint about lack of gameplay is more compelling but trailers aren't always meant to show gameplay. They are first and foremost to generate hype and this one delivers. Too bad it doesn't work for you two.

Well yeah, when you're first watching it it appears to be a graphical showcase trailer for a weird survival horror game from an unknown developer, probably for next-gen consoles. And because those types of games typically either sputter out or are released and mediocre, it was nothing to be excited about.

Then once you realize it's actually Metal Gear Solid V and has probably been in the works for 3-4 years by most of Konami's team that worked on IV, you suddenly have developer pedigree and an explanation for why the hell the trailer was so damn cryptic.

I don't think anyone was floored by the "gameplay" in that trailer, because it amounted to nothing more than running down a hallway. But we know the actual game that's being made is likely a proper Metal Gear, with an absurd story, bombastic boss battles, and some great stealth action gameplay.

What we probably saw was snippets of the first 15-30 minutes of the game (since typically in Metal Gear games you have about 1 minute of gameplay and 29 minutes of cinematics/cut-scenes during that).

If you want to know what type of gameplay you're getting, it's probably a lot like IV with some new twists -- or so I hope, because it was a damn shame that they finally made a competent metal gear control scheme and had painfully little gameplay to let you try all of the cool stuff that you can do.

If you don't like Metal Gear, I doubt Konami is working on something that will win you over. If you are like me and love the gameplay and the multitude of ways you can tackle any given situation (while finding the story amusing for its absurdity), then this is exciting because V is coming and it looks gorgeous.

So does that mean this trailer doesn't count either? After all, it was just a cutscene.

Game doesn't even look that good to begin with.
I'm pretty sure some of the crawling parts are gameplay.

Mind blown and sad face.

Uh, so I haven't paid attention to this at all, but now that I am...

Is Ground Zeroes not the same as this? This is completely different?

Is this Solid Snake or Big Boss? There are two MGS games coming out?

Zanzibar isn't Zanzibarland. Zanzibarland was in Central Asia. The MGS4 novel says that it's actually Tselinoyarsk.

I just rewatched 14min presentation of Ground Zeroes. Magnificent, so full of details even though its clearly aimed at current gen consoles..

KOJIMA BRING GZ TO PC!!!! Put always-on DRM if you want, I dont care!

Without a doubt, this is Big Boss. As for one or two games, nobody knows. I think there will be two.

I think that when the dust settles this particular trailer will go down in history as the best reveal ever.

And no, current gen consoles won't be able to pull these grafix off, not in a million years.

I believe you are a little too excited.

I hope MGS 5 is a series of loosely related short stories set in the MGS universe with some emphasis on the surreal. I'm not interested in any more traditional MGS games.

What year does Big Boss take part in the Les Enfants Terribles project? Maybe that is related to the hospital in some way.

I also remember the fox engine stuff Kojima posted on his twitter awhile ago, talking about translucency with certain clothing fabric. Looks dope.

Seems those nurses were also used in the trailer.

Also, anyone has any idea why in both trailers, when looking at a bright light, we hear a creepy sound?

GZ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=L5IVOs5Pxh8#t=234s

In Phantom (a light is shone in Big Boss' eyes):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nSfajBs2nyQ#t=173s

That's not even mentioning to weird floating lights/lens effect in the GZ trailer that happens twice.

Woah, nice find! Now that's what I call confirmation that both trailers are the same game.

Mark my words, they are cut-scene checkpoints. If you skip animation, you jump to the next lights/lens marker.

How is that logical? So you have to watch the cutscene to know where, when you replay it, you'll skip to, rather than skip the cutscene outright?

I somehow doubt that's it. They also both happen far into the whole cinematic.

edit: BTW If the event in the hospital is an escape situation, what if..., Mantis is actually helping Big Boss escape? So the giant whale is Mantis helping Big Boss somehow? If he's on your side, you can expect a lot of The Sorrow/Mantis moments (god it's so stupid that The Sorrow is Ocelot's father).

Japanese developers seem to have long forgotten the PC, right up until the Dark Souls PTDE came out for it. Still, that port is a bit of a disaster (although still the best version), so I would prefer for Japanese devs of AAA games to contract with a western publisher who can handle the porting to PC.

Obviously I don't have the numbers, but based on a sample of my steam friends I think Dark Souls PC is selling pretty well. I see real life friends playing it who I never would have expected to be interested in that game.
