God Of War Ascension Single Player Demo Impressions -Totally Recalled It

3 more months until release, marketing for singleplayer campaign will kick in soon.

Total mistake.
Their fans want a great single player campaign and will buy the game because of that. In this way they're sending the message that the single player is just a filler for the multiplayer mode hence the game is clearly slipping under the radar.
Multiplayer is not something that you can truly hype through pre-release marketing, not for a game that has been traditionally single player at least, people have to play it and if it's good a community will form, word of mouth on the internet will bring new players and so on.
The should have sticked to the way marketing was done for the Uncharted games.

I am really not hyped for this one. it feels like SSM is not putting much effort into it. They just have engine ready and want to make something for cash grabs.
hopefully i will be wrong and this will pleasantly surprise me

Cannot wait for this!! Awesome impressions. Is the only way to get the demo through the movie? I hope PS + gets access to this.

When I first saw the demo back at Sony's Conference, I could tell they tightened up the combat immediately.

I wonder if they capped the framerate to 30 in this one. If it's even running at GOW 3's framerate, I'd be impressed.

It's GOW, so I know I'll be playing it. Even if I did get burned out on Kratos after 3. Enough time has passed that I am ready for it. Thanks for the impressions.

They said that it will be 60FPS, no questions asked. Makes it even more impressive.

Outrageous! I would assume that would be the case for MP, so I'll still hold a wait and see on the SP. Because if they managed to do a constant 60FPS with those visuals...wow.

Sounds like it'll be a solid rental. Don't think I can pay $60 for a short linear game again, especially one where it's also a prequel yet is going to just be more of the same.

Crazy that a GoW game is totally slipping under the radar.

Because it's the same stuff again but with a strong focus on a lame MP mode.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.

I am not watching any SP trailer. Do you guys really need SP trailer, after 5 games? You know what you are getting, and SSM is not going to release crap.

After GoW 3, i dont need any trailers or demos. Any game from SSM gets my day one purchase.

GOW Asc will not have a locked framerate. They always have variable framerate between 40- 60 usually closer to the 50 -60 mark. Their absolutely brilliant use of motion blur somehow masks any perceivable changes to the framerate.

Regarding the visuals it looks good but not quite there at GOW3 level yet which is understandable given its not the final build. There are a few bugs and glitches here and there. No one should be worried though because everyone knows how GOW3 looked at E3 and how the final build looked. Kratos is super detailed again and I can bet that when GOW A releases this will be one of the most beautiful looking games and Kratos will prob continue to be the most detailed looking character model in a console game ever.

How is the framerate?

The framerate is the only cause for concern I have in this demo.

I'd say it's a lot closer to hovering around 30 than varying up towards 45-60. This makes the incredible animation just slightly less clear. However, the GOW3 demo's framerate was also a bit low and they managed to bump it up significantly in the final release.

Even if the game ends up being a mostly 30fps affair, the visuals and the combat (which is actually tangibly different in some key ways) should make up for it.

Marketing hasn't even started, and non-number "sequels" don't usually get as much hype as the numbered ones.

IF this is really a big upgrade over three, they're shooting themselves by not calling it four. It'd be only two games in a gen, that's nothing to hide behind subtitles and it's not a PSP spin-off that many think is somehow not good enough to be a "main line" entry (see: MGS). Besides, "GoW FOUR, now for PS FOUR sounds" more than a console with milked franchises than ZOMG IT FITS, if they're planning that.

I wasn't too keen on getting another GoW but after reading the preview, I am pretty hyped now. GoW possesses one of the best IQ for a console game and it makes me wonder just what they will extract from Sony's next gen system.

They can't call it gow 4,that's for the ps4,this games's story is set at the earliest in the timeline.

Calling a prequel 4 or whatever feels disingenuous to me because most probably expect 4 to mean advancing the story, not regressing it. But at the same time I do believe it being a prequel hurt a lot of the hype, not to mention all of the multiplayer focus they've had so far. In 3 we knew what was going to happen, but who wasn't looking forward to finally killing Zeus and the other gods? But now, what is there? Some more minor gods or titans to kill? Meh.

Some general impressions:

Image quality is exemplary, as it was in GOW3.

The animation really does feel new in a way that GOW3's didn't.

Combat is faster, which was already apparent from watching videos.

Kratos is a little too powerful in the demo; sometimes it's hard to experiment with the combat because everything you do completely demolishes the enemies.

Framerate is a little low for a GOW game, but I'm only worried it will mar their excellent animation, not that it will hurt playability.

Experience orb chests are now smashed instantly, health and magic still take time to open, which makes sense given the original reasoning behind making chests difficult to open in a pinch.

The sound design is notably different; tons of bass when those chains slam on the ground and some new chain swinging SFX, too. A welcome change from GOW3 which for some reason didn't sound that good to me.

New combat features:

An SSX-style real-time combo upgrade system. As you play, you build the rage meter, and it unlocks more powerful combos at the halfway mark. It also imbues your attacks with fire, using the same fire mechanics as Ghost of Sparta, where you can plant time-delayed bombs on enemies. I believe they have said that Kratos will get several elemental magics and we're seeing the fire magic in the demo.

At the full mark it allows for what appears to be an insta-kill blade-grab move. As Meta4 said earlier in the thread, I hope they add something better than that because it's a little anti-climactic.

Grab an enemy with R1 and hit X to disarm them. It looks like they're serious about the World Weapons system and you can acquire weapons almost at-will rather than having to wait to find them in the environment.

can someone please share this demo? the uk release of total recall doesn't appear to come with the demo. :(

this is one of my most loved series, would love to play the demo.

Have had a blast with the multiplayer beta and I got to try the SP demo over the weekend. It certainly made justifying my Collectors Edition preorder that much easier.

Gonna have to echo that you just melt enemies in the demo, but damn does combat feel so good.

Thanks for the impressions man, sounds great.

It took me 22 hours to beat gow3 on hard and I was a broken man by the end of it. It just kicked my ass. Now I'm not sure if I want to go through an experience like that again and "wimp" out at the risk of it feeling too easy and therefore not as memorable. I feel like now that I've traveled down that road, I can't go back.

It feels like a God of War game, but they've made just enough changes to the formula to make it feel new and distincitive. The world weapon system, the new Rage system with it's various elemental powers you gain over time, the time-control mechanic will hopefully bring up some interesting puzzles/combat scenarios; all with some of the fastest, most visceral, most gorgeous lookin' God of War gameplay yet.

Don't cheat yourself of an amazing experience. Ramp it up to hard. That is the only way to play games if your old school. GOW3 took me a few days to beat. My completion time said 14hrs but its not an accurate reflection. Factoring in deaths, and retrying multiple stages my final play time is probably more around 18hrs.

Ideally a perfect GOW game would combine the story of 1 , the environments of 2 and the quality of bosses found in 3. I hope this game achieves that.

Just played the demo and it looks amazing. Doesn't seem to be locked at 60fps. Heres some more screens. Also have a video uploading right now. Demo runs for about 10-12 minutes depending on the players skill.

Nice dude thanks for the upload. There is one thing I've always wanted out of a God Of War game and that's the ability to cancel a combo. I hate it when I see an attack coming but I can't cancel my combo to avoid it. Can you do that in this game?

Maybe PC has spoiled me, but I'm not sure what everyone finds so impressive about this shot.
Kratos from GoWIII is still one of the best looking character models I've seen on console or PC.

Also, it's funny you say PC has spoiled you, because the vast majority of good looking games we get on PC are ports of console games; if we're lucky we get better textures.

the fact you don't need a 500 dollar GTX 680 to get that image quality, im a avid pc gamer and I've always been impressed at the sony exclusives, i own a ps3 just for their exclusive titles, is quite remarkable what they do with a hardware that is so freaking old, really top notch dev talent

It's running on seven year old hardware.

Looking at the footage, I really like what they've done with the HUD and QTE prompts. They're pretty small but still stand out.

Can't wait for this. GoW3 was a bit of a disappointment but I still had a ton of fun with this.

Might have to pick up Total Recall just for this demo. The combat in the gameplay video looks fantastic.

A couple of world weapon moves that people might not find on their own:

Spear: Hold O for a stronger spear that staggers the enemy.

Sword: Hold O to flail wildly. The combo terminates on its own, but you can release circle early to deliver a staggering blow. Makes the hammer statue guy a breeze.

One thing I really hope about this demo is that they aren't showing us the blades or world weapons at maximum power. I know they want to demonstrate their combat system fully, but it's such a bummer to not feel some degree of surprise when you upgrade your weapons because you've already seen everything before buying the game.

Also, they finally made the L1+[] move look good. I never really liked the animation or the feel of using it (though it improved throughout the series), nor did it sufficiently control the crowd since enemies can easily attack through it while you're stuck in the animation.
