I was playing Delta Halo in Halo 2 Vista, and I noticed things weren't rendering properly. Namely, the foliage on the trees.

The top is a screen taken from Xbox (quality a bit low), and the second is one I took from PC a second ago. As you can see, there's a big difference. The level looks bare without the trees...

Anyone know a fix? It's kinda irritating.

You should use the "Promethean Defense Turret" instead of the Beam Turret.
From the Halo 4 art book. The turret was cut from the game.

(sorry about the picture quality)
Those look like the ones that show up occasionally in Spartan Ops.

I don't remember getting betrayed for flag caps so much in previous Halos as I have been in 4's CTF. Team Regicide is still the best playlist in the game (great gametype overall), but could use some new maps real fast.

vacation is over, boo.

hmm. THat's a new one. I've never had that happen. Have you tried maybe reinstalling? That's the only thing I can think of that might fix it.

Even then though, the selection wasn't that great. It had more poor maps then good ones.
Like Steely said, is the quality even better in Halo 4? We've had bad launch maps since H3 - I think people were hoping it would be a bit different now with a new developer and fresh ideas in the fold, but it feels just the same. I am satisfied that there is no shield door or low grav sections, but I still cannot buy the fact they keep pressing 2 Flag, Oddball, and KotH in nearly every single map, including Ragnarok. "Oh, well we aren't going to put gametypes in maps just for the sake of it". Wrong. If you're going to have awful AA's like PV, Camo, and so on, likewise with any tact/support upgrade, etc., make the map accounted for in size, symmetry, and without a bunch of close-knit locales.

I'm baffled that a game that shipped with three gametypes, most of which feel it's necessary to have symmetrical maps in use, and can only ship with a select few that truly are.

Reach lacked primarily in the larger maps, mainly due to Bungie pushing Invasion hard and ignoring BTB maps. Maps like Zealot, Powerhouse, and the other small ones outside The Cage are above these as a collective group.

This I agree with. The game lacks 4v4 maps that I can't deny.

I look at it this way:

Haven: best for TS, Oddball (which is disheartening since it's not great size for it)
Adrift: decent for CTF (when the BS isn't involved)
Abandon: can join Isolation and The Cage for being awful
Complex: hop in the backseat with Abandon
Solace: another map that really isn't designed very well for these gametypes; the jungle base stinks, and the spawns are just horrid all around

If the maps were good (and let's be honest, if the game's default gametypes and settings weren't pure junk, too), I am certain the complaints would be minimal at best.

It will essentially move you to cover a lot quicker, while messing up the enemies aim completely.

Default Thruster Pack isn't that useful, but it is decent.

It's the least game changing of the AA's. Something that you use in a few situations, unlike the other AA's which are in near constant usage throughout a match. It's how I wish all AA's were handled.
Comparing something like camo or PV to thruster pack is pretty hilarious given their overall usefulness.

Solace is the only smaller map I won't vote for. Bases are too small, There are too many boxes/crates cluttering up the map, completely unnecessary height variation in areas that end up restricting movement more than anything, the vertical beam/LineOfSight blocker is implemented very poorly (balcony to balcony fighting is just looking for a red reticle), etc. I'd play on Complex any day of the week compared to Solace. Funny how I thought it was going to be a quality map to play on before launch.

edit: Hologram for life. I wish I could upload the video of me assassinating a sword/camo camper because he got fooled, but...yeah. Maybe soon.

I'll probably get slammed for this, but I actually think Abandon is the best shipped 4 vs 4 base-trait slayer map. Has the most interesting battle areas and the radar doesnt completely dominate the 3 story building since you don't know exactly how many floors down/up a player is.

Haven is probably the second best 4vs4 slayer map, but with only 2 stories (the radar is beast) and binary/canon spawns keep it from being as fair as Abandon.

Complex is fun if you like the DMR (which I do). I find it plays like Hang'em High since you can essentially pistol snipe across the map and its the only map with clean sight lines outside of Haven.

Solace is fucking sightline garbage. Too much crap in the way, to top it off you also have an entire basement to further separate it off, and if that wasnt enough lets drop this giant orange beam of light in the way to kill the rest of your viewing angles. Jetpack owns.

Adrift is radar abusive. No playlist for it

If you don't think that's the worst set of 4 vs 4 launch maps, I'd like to hear which Halo game does.

I'm an Objective based player first and foremost, always have been in Halo. That's why when many posters kept asking "Where's Assault?", we got nothing, it kept lingering around that it was cut. So then we find out about the new "additions" in CTF, which all are quite frankly awful, and the other two are the secondary gametypes in Oddball and King. Major disappointment. Easily the worst set of gametypes released since Halo 3 to me. Now there's factoring in what works with what, and by a simple list like that, anybody can see why it's faltering. There's nothing in the 5v5 set that keeps me staying in that area.

Abandon's center of attraction is defined by lifts. And when there's radar, plus Camo, plus PV, plus Boltshot secondary, and plus the grenadier upgrade? It's a recipe for disaster. Mini-sized Construct.

Something something Ford Pickup Truck!

When are they supposed to get back to work, anyway?

soon

i honestly have zero faith that anything useful will happen this month. fileshares will probably be online next month, ranking system when the new maps (dlc) are released, and maybe some minor sandbox changes.

if anything happens in january i would be shocked.

Angel said that there's going to be a bulletin next week (however not this week), so I would assume they go back then.

Speaking of the bulletin, I'm really hoping the following will be addressed:
- Virgin Gaming/MLG relationship (highly unlikely)
- Team Doubles (promised "early 2013")
- Hardcore/MLG playlist (promised "early 2013" - I think)
- Forge maps in matchmaking (probably promised "early 2013" like everything else)
- File sharing at 100% (promised "early 2013")
- Ranking system (promised "early 2013")

It's January 2nd. The bulletin will be out the 9th. That's "early 2013" to me.

My thoughts too.

Every answer from them seems to be Soon. I wouldn't be shocked if they stay it will be next month. Then next month after that...

I'm sure, but I always found it bothersome for Forge maps in MM.
Yeah, it would have been nice if one of the cameras you placed in Forge worked as the thumbnail for the map. Something that's fairly minor but instantly increases the perceived quality of the map and gives you some concrete taste of it without playing.

Not sure what 'it' refers to, but I'm guessing you meant Oddball - which I find interesting, since I was just thinking last night how well Oddball plays on Haven.

Can you tell me what's wrong with Haven's size, with respect to that gametype?

Games end so fast on every map in H4 regarding oddball. All of them are oversized for my liking. H4 would play much better 5v5 default.

That Wetwork perk is pretty cool. Its nice knowing some try hard with pro headphones cant hear my footsteps a mile away.

Assassinations also seem easier to pull off, button press wise.

Just a little easy too easy to sit on the ball especially with the ability to pass it. It is a far better environment to play than say Adrift, Abandon, Solace, and Complex, but those maps are simply bad for the gametype. Oddball is best played on very small areas like Midship or Warlock. It's not Flag or Assault, two of which bring more versatility to gameplay; it requires small maps. Oddball, King, and Territories/Plots are ones that belong on select few maps because of their design and with proper placement.

Huh. Just went through my history, looking for my last half-dozen Oddball games.

Haven 300-274 8:18 (win)
Haven 300-260 6:38 (win)
Haven 300-144 4:50 (loss)
Haven 300-82 4:14 (win)
Haven 300-272 6:27 (loss)
Complex 300-242 5:30 (loss)

Yeah, I guess those are pretty short. Never really noticed it... Seems like if you made them smaller, you'd die even quicker (I average 15-20 kills and 10-15 deaths in these games) - though you're right, you'd probably lengthen the game, because it'd be harder to hold onto the ball.

They're only REALLY short when the score's seriously lopsided, though - most of the time, I find it to be pretty close. (I go in alone a lot; I bet that makes a difference.)

Oddball is 5v5 and my experience is that the games usually feel like they last a while, so quite the contrary lol

I agree. I think Haven is a perfect small-feeling map for Oddball since you can throw it now. Just enough playing ground for any type of encounter and strategy like throwing the Oddball or locking a spot down.

Oddball with a waypoint works so well now because movement with it is much faster. I never really liked how you could see the Oddball at all times because it took away from the sneakiness that was in Halo 1, but now that you can throw I'm fine with it.

Now they just need to fix the "Escort" waypoint so you can see the player's name. They want to give the player more info by taking away info that used to be there?

I love using the wetworks perk because I can't hear my footsteps but I can hear anyone that is trying to sneak up on me. I love my Astros :)...

Haven seems to be the only map where Oddball plays really well. I'm sure that has to do with the circular nature of the map, but every other choice has its share of areas/bases where you can just grab the ball and set your controller down if you have a team that's remotely cohesive.

I like the changes made to Oddball, but I wish they could have somehow made it more appealing to keep the ball holder (teehee) moving instead of the standard "find the least accessible to enemies" spot.

Are the specialisations perks all in the one category? Im level 80 something now and all ther perks are in the same category (Stealth, stability, nemesis etc) or have i just happened to choose ones in the same category?

I was thinking about what Over had said yesterday about the height variation on Haven and I'm really not sure I can agree.

On the bottom outer ring, there are those juts that act as low cover but also as a vantage point.
The bottom middle bridge has the railings, the ramps and the ledges inside those ramps. The large central structure on that bridge has a base to jump on too.
The bottom ramps behind that weird hanging structure aren't what I'd call lazy design either. There is also the support beam under that ramp where layers can jump up into.
On the top outer ring you have almost the entire inner wall of which to jump on. It's tricky to do but it's still something that can be done as it can give interesting sightlines to both the upper and lower rings.
The centre bridge has the small ramp which also acts as a sort of low cover for people not standing directly on it.
Those hexagonal shapes in the middle are reachable from the grav lift exits and even those are changes in the height levels. There are also the opposite corners to that central area.
There are also those two wings on either side of the top mid.

I get that the map seems boring but I don't think you can just discount the jumps from making it interesting. How does it compare to Guardian? I don't want another Assembly which was far too much height variation for my liking. I think Haven are good people. I can't imagine a Halo game where that map wouldn't be one of the top tier maps. Maybe I misunderstood the complaint Over had with it.

I was talking about replacing 4v4 with 5v5, make it default for H4 since the maps are huge.

JIP drops me into games when they're about to end or face me against a team. Which usually results in the game ending quick.

Friend of mine just got Halo 4 and we've completed the campaign. Having played it once already and having seen the terminal vids, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I really liked the campaign :$. I also tried to focus on the soundstrack and I have to say, the soundtracks in H4 are great too. For some reason, I couldn't remember a single H4 tune from my first playtrough. It's as if the game doesn't want you to hear the music.

It is pretty bad implanted in the game. Sound FX etc is louder than the music the most times. You have to pay attention to it the most of times.

I disagree. It's tough to lock down positions in OB because of Instant Respawn, especially if your teamwork isn't top notch.

I think Wreckage is a good map for ball movement because of how open it is. Halo 4's OB is less about "keeping the ball holder moving" and more about "keeping the ball itself moving". There are many places to throw the OB with decent sight lines and interesting gameplay dynamics around the man-cannons.

True. I was actually thinking 343 would make the game everything 5v5 like Gears did after the first one.

The only two lists that are 4v4 are Infinity Slayer and SWAT. (Hmm. I guess the temporary Team Regicide is 4v4, too... but it should be going away soon.) I'd hardly call 4v4 the 'default'.
