Yeah, Sega tried that once. Not a great idea.
SEGA failed because of other things, if MS is starting to hype it now they should be able to pull it off with all their money for ads and huge third party support, except for Japan maybe.

My next-gen wishlist:

  • Gamerscore points builds toward something you can show off and works as some kind of virtual currency/reward system.
  • An always on device.
  • A device that jumps between apps and games fast (minimal loading times)
  • Some decent multitasking capabilities (Social media, Skype and music streaming services should be able to play while gaming or web browsing)
  • Increased Kinect accuracy/reliability and more immersive M-rated games that take advantage of the technology.
  • Natural language interaction with Kinect and voice response (What's the weather forecast?)
  • Greater control of entertainment center via voice (power on, volume control, channel changing, input selection)
  • 3D movies and 7.1 audio for Xbox Videos
  • Windows Store game compatibility (Windows 8 games that support the controller should run on Xbox and be listed in marketplace)
  • Kinect glasses in the next 5 years

  • An always on device. maybe. The xbox set top box will be.
  • A device that jumps between apps and games fast (minimal loading times)if the RAM leaks are right then it will
  • Some decent multitasking capabilities (Social media, Skype and music streaming services should be able to play while gaming or web browsing) same as above
  • Increased Kinect accuracy/reliability and more immersive M-rated games that take advantage of the technology. No doubt
  • Natural language interaction with Kinect and voice response (What's the weather forecast?) that would be good
  • Greater control of entertainment center via voice (power on, volume control, channel changing, input selection)
  • 3D movies and 7.1 audio for Xbox Videos its likely to happen
  • Windows Store game compatibility (Windows 8 games that support the controller should run on Xbox and be listed in marketplace) not going to happen. with the exception for compatible apps.
  • Kinect glasses in the next 5 years

Weird. I seem to remember a lot of exclusives hitting the 360 in 2007, which i am assuming is the year he was talking about.
And they've always had at least two big exclusives every fall since the 360 launched. I don't know why anyone would say otherwise.

OK? i'd love to get hyped but there's nothing here.

I just want a lot of high quality exclusive software and a very powerful 720.

Also I highly doubt they'll debut the next Xbox at E3. I'd think they'd do a MTV special or something on TV like they did with the 360. I don't think they care about core gamers as much especially going forward to make Xbox a multimedia hub to debut it at E3.

Looking forward to it. I've been harder on Microsoft lately than the other members of the big three because they haven't brought many exclusives to the table that I'm super interested in (plus the Kinect focus). But I know I'll love the next Xbox when it comes out regardless. The first 4 years of the 360's life I had an absolute ball, and it's really only the fact that I own every console that I drifted away from it in the second half of its life (because of somewhat limited funds and the fact that I put exclusives on higher priority than most multiplat games).

The thought of a new Xbox plus some Nintendo exclusives for the Wii U next holiday, make it sound like 2013 will be a pretty interesting gaming year (and that's not even mentioning Sony, who I've probably favored the last 4 or so years). The thought of a new Xbox also makes me excited for CoD again. I skipped Blops 2 because of major fatigue and the fact that I wanted a break so I'd be excited for next-gen CoD -- playing CoD 2 at the launch of the 360 was one of my fondest gaming periods, so I'm hoping I can re-create that in 2013.

I'm not gonna hold my breath for 5 months... I hope we get more info in the meantime, or else this sort of teasing won't have any effect (we all knew it was coming anyway).

If every Xbox includes Kinect, you can bet every game will require Kinect functionality in one form or another. Even if its simple as allowing for voice commands to bring up friends lists etc.

If they make kinect a standard on all consoles and expect it to be used in all games, there are big chances those universal features will be handled at OS level. Like voice chat and messenging on the 360 for example.

My biggest fear for next-gen Xbox is that we're going to lose some of the functionality and content available on the Xbox 360.

This seems to always happen with MS when they change technology in various industries -- you get a whole bunch of cool new features, but lose some of the ones that you love and some of the content you were expecting to carry over. I know it's going to happen. Something that I love on Xbox 360 is not going to be possible on the next Xbox.

I feel bad that I can't even think of significant ideas of how they can improve gaming. Last generation I never would have thought of Gamerscore and achievements, but those turned out to be brilliant ideas that made video games more fun to play and changed the way that I play games. If the next Xbox can continue to introduce mechanisms like achievements that add an extra layer of depth and replayability to video games then that will be the biggest advancement.

I'd hate to see Rareware games getting the launch treatment only never to be seen again.

Minus CoD (even though it releases on the PS3), and plus a few more exclusives, right (this year being the notable exception)?

I don't get it, you make out that MS is releasing one exclusive a year and then go on to say that Sony is releasing more than that.

Are you talking just sales of all exclusives over a year or the number of exclusives? Are you counting downloadable games? Also which year are you talking about in particular because iirc MS has had years where they at least equaled if not even surpassed Sony in terms of the amount of exclusives they released.

I'll laugh my ass off if it's an announcement for timed exclusive CoDBlOps2 DLC.

At E3 in 6 months. Doesn't seem likely.

This will probably never happen. GS and Trophies are glitched and hacked so much this gen that people even made software to timestamp their achievements/trophies. This would be hacked in no time and the whole system would be moot. Better would be to go the Club-Nintendo route and reward players who buy a lot of NEW games with cool stuff.

Just get on with it, I want a new toy!

Show me Forza 5 and my wallet will fall open like the legs of a well-travelled camp follower.

The games will probably feel the same. You aim and you shoot.

You've been playing the wrong games, there's a ton of variety out there this generation.

Xbox Live Platinum?

in all seriousness, I hope there are different levels of xbox live next gen. silver should be free online gaming with free app access. gold should add part chat, discounts, access to betas, etc and platinum should be something like psn plus with free games every month as well as deep discounting.

I still can't believe that some people think Rare is anything but an Avatar costume/Kinect party game factory at this point. The only hope is Microsoft outsourcing their IPs to somebody capable of doing them any sort of justice.

That said I'm glad new hardware is finally on the horizon, if only to make PC ports look better. Microsoft, Sony... Don't rightly care. Just do it already! It's a long time coming.

I hope Kinect doesn't become a required thing, I don't have nearly enough space in my room to use that. Unless they develop a Kinect 2 which is also usable by people sitting at computer desks.

Oh a countdown.

I just can't wait to find out how anti-consumer and disappointing the next generation will be.

Count me in!

this has become a genuinet worry for me now since reading about sony's patent to link games to console id. I hope no-one dues this, but it's not looking too good. :(

I don't believe it will. it didn't sell anywhere near enough for it be considered something that has to be required. there might be games that require kinect 2.0, possibly at launch, but I would be shocked if it was a vital accessory to get the most out of the console.
