Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2012 (Dec 17 - Dec 23)

On my phone now. I'll try to write up something better next week but:

1. After New Years sales you can still buy a Wii U but it was sold out at both local department stores. I guess that is where kids go with their parents to spend their Otoshidama (the New Years money)

2. No used Wii U systems yet anywhere. But I have seen some used copies of Mass Effect 3, Nintendoland and ZombiU. Not much of a discount though.

3. Prices have gone up on used copies of the DS Amimal Closding game. I guess people are buying it when they can't fond the new one.

4. The 3ds Animal Crossing Game was sold out at all the shops I looked at but some convience stores still have the download cards.

5. Seeing lots if used copies of Beavely Default. Usual price is about 4000yen. No collapse in price but it is very easy to get used now.

6. Vita game section at Manga Souko has been pushed next to the 360 games in the back. But the amount of money you can get for used Vita games is still quite high so it seems game shops haven't given up on it yet.

7. I have not seen a NSMB2 download card at any convience store all week. I am not sure if that means they are selling well or if Nintendo is just rotating in other games. Would love to hear how it is in other areas.

8. Toys R Us had Wii U Premiums but not basics. First time I have seen this. Maybe now that the rush for the hardcore is over, the more mainstream customers care more about the price.

9. I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. It is living up to the hype.

Thanks for the report.
It seems Bravely Default is successful also in the second-hand market; usually jRPG are quite easy to be found as such, at way cheaper prices. Nice that Wii U seems to going well.

As for Vita, how's the space shops are dedicating to its games, in general?

PS: enjoy one of the greatest games ever :p

Accurate as at the week before Christmas. The City I live in has about 200,000 people.
-My local Aeon dedicated 2 shelves, which is about 10 games (mainly Miku and Persona). This is the largest department store in the city.
-My local Yamada Denki had 5 shelves (compared to the 3DS' 40+)
-My local Best had 3 shelves (and 13 games, about 5 Miku)
-My local Book Off (2nd hand) had one shelf at the top of the PSP section.
-My local Geo had 10 shelves. This store is brand new (opening early-mid November).

Was going to post it at the time (which is why I have the figures) but got busy preparing to come home for Christmas.

Thanks. Did you notice any change in the space dedicated to the platform (increased / decreased number of shelves)? And how that space is compared to other platforms -Wii, 360, PS3, etc.- in general?

Aeon and Yamada have been cut by more than half compared to launch. Book Off hasn't increased since launch. Dunno about Geo or Best. If the 360 is there, Vita is equal or slightly more. If there's no 360, it's the platform with the lowest amount of space.

It generally goes: 3DS > DS = Wii = PSP > PS3 > Wii U > Vita => 360

Layton vs AA has been on sale for 4000 yen new already. That would be low for a used price. (and I got it for 5800 yen for the downloaded version :( )

Thanks for the report!! I finally played Crono Trigger several years ago and felt silly for ignoring it for so long. Are you playing the DS remake?

I'm not surprised since there are still a lot of unsold units from the first shipment.

According to Media Create 305,000 units were shipped, at best if we include the sales of last week its LTD must be around 230,000. It's sad to see how hard Professor Layton has fallen, at least Inazuma Eleven has managed to stabilize. Both Inazuma Eleven Go titles for 3DS will end up selling around 450,000 units, a figure that now looks absolutely unreachable for Professor Layton. I don't think Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies will do better than Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.

[3DS] Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask <ADV> (Level 5) {2011.02.26} (¥5.980) - 117,589 / 354,344
[3DS] Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney <ADV> (Level 5) {2012.11.29} (¥5.980) - 135,450 / 214,728

[3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go: Shine / Dark (Level 5) {2011.12.15} - 141,458 / 434,758
[3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone - Neppuu / Raimei <RPG> (Level 5) {2012.12.13} (¥5.500) - 170,980 / 266,993

It's the iOS version so based on the DS remake. I know I should be playing it on something else. I have the cart but when you have kids you know.... iPhone.

As for vita, I don't see much decrease in shelf space. Mostly location changes and the absence of space increases.

Since 3DS exploded this year it is cannibalizing other gaming space. Notably the DS, Wii and PSP. PS3 has mostly held its own. Most stores have had no change. I wonder if that will change with the Wii U. Right now it has so few games it rarely takes more than one or 2 (if they are putting hardware and software together) shelves. So it is just taking up space in the New Release area for now.

Walked around stores in Den Den Town in Osaka as well as the bigger department stores like Bic Camera and Yodobashi during the last three days and not one place had a copy of Animal Crossing. Download codes were very easy to get a hold of though. I was shopping for the the latest Taiko No Tatsujin on Wii with the controller as well but nowhere has that either just the standalone game and even then many stores were sold out.

Now that I'm back in the sticks again I'm gonna continue looking for the bundle. Typical that when I finally decide to take the plunge on Taiko Wii I can't get the bloody thing.

Yup I know exactly what your talking about ;)
I made a New Years resolution to play less on iOS and more with my dedicated handhelds.

The Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney news makes me believe that we won't see a localization in the US. Hopefully, we will get the final PL game, though.

No way. Layton is one of the few brands that are actually selling on 3DS outside Mario, and I strongly believe this entry will be the 2013 release (since the 6th episode hasn't been released yet in Japan).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Isn't that a bit exaggerated? I mean, what about other Nintendo titles, Sonic, Kingdom Hearts, Tales of the Abyss, Skylanders, Lego...? In UK I can see it as true, but not in the rest of the Europe / US.

Calling it now, I think we'll see some subtle rebranding going on... Professor Layton and the Ace Attorney!

EDIT: Likewise, if you had no idea that Phoenix Wright existed... it could almost sound like a mystery... Professor Layton and the Phoenix Wright!

I mean, you cannot compare how big Layton is in Europe with respect to Tales of, Kingdom Hearts, Sonic stand-along games and even Skylanders (on handheld).

Yeah, they will either make Phoenix Wright nonexistent (Professor Layton and The Witch Trial) or make him a secondary character (Professor Layton and the Rookie Lawyer). That's my idea.

Yes!!! Mini-Vinnk village. Please do this as much as you can.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Do they usually delay like this at the start of a new year?

Thanks! I'll try. Been busy with the holidays and getting videos done. But, yeah it's an exciting time now. I love generation changes. No promises, but if I can get out to stores this week, is there anything you want me to look for specifically (other than Nintendo themed candy)?

Awesome. I'm not one to make predictions but I think Wii U will be right between 90k-105k. The strength of animal crossing is a bit flabbergasting for me since I've never played any of the AC games. Is the 3DS version really that good?

One guy playing Chrono Trigger for the first time, another one never played AC....

You have to play it. Described it sounds boring, and if you play it, you will not really getting it or love it.

I've been lurking GAF since 2002 and I still don't know how this ******** hate started.

Where do they get their numbers from? Are they just guessing?

-edit

I see the name is banned. I was talking about chartzzz

I'll make a prediction

3DS: 286,518
WiiU: 85,151
PSP: 52,591
PS3: 38,246
Vita: 16,880
Wii: 9,184
360: 1,373
DS: 527

Can someone explain how from this post it was deduced that he got the numbers from a banned site? Either you guys are all geniuses, or I'm an idiot.

Also, Geo has Donkey Kong Country Returns for 2000 yen today, and I got a 200 yen off coupon. I'm real tempted to pick it up, but I've bought so many games recently.

Ok people, found this fresh long Nikkei article (translation of the title seems to be something like "3DS and Wii U strike back - part 1". Next part in 13 days) about Nintendo with quotes from Iwata. The numbers here don't include week 52 when it comes to the Wii U (total HD sales is the same as MC) but are higher for Animal Crossing New Leaf when compared to MC & Famitsu week 51 numbers. Anyway, it seems we have some interesting stuff. I summon a translation, at least for the interesting parts.

From my google translate: 500K of the 2.3M ACNL copies sold are downloads. Also a lot of talk about audience segmentation, about how the hype for this game emerged and about social gaming too.

Something tells me this graph is about to look much less favorable.
