Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2012 (Dec 17 - Dec 23)

I hope Nintendo's plan of action for Wii U will be more significant and effective than Sony's for Vita. As a WiiU owner, I'm already concerned about it's 3rd party support and longevity.

Yesterday Akihabara was full of traded in Wii Us. Wasn't really looking to see how the 'proper' stocks were though.

Wow, I wonder why? Software not good, or just bad experiences? I do wonder if the day one update, super slow OS and crashes were just too much.

If you mean Western titles it's not looking good.

The Wii U is doing ok. It is following a normal pattern with holiday sales. If it stays flat or increases next week, that would be normal also.

I'm American so...yeah. And I already have accepted the best eastern Nintendo titles won't be translated/ported to my region locked console. It took 5 years of begging Reggie just to give us Xenoblade for Christs sake. And we never even got Disaster Day of Crisis etc. etc.

Umm it's not THAT bad! It has recycled music, yes, but it has many redeeming qualities (including portability).
I know it's not bad, but I enjoyed U more since every level was unique while 2 was mostly COINS COINS COINS so if felt more like a challenge mode to collect coins first a 2D Mario game second.

I'd think it would double next week, no?
That would be amazing for any system much less a launch system, so no.

I wouldn't be surprised with another 80k week in Week 1, then the descent to ~20k a week excluding major game releases.

Hmm. Could it be that Nintendo is deliberately following the 3DS pattern? lol

As in, year of weakness, then price drop, and Iwata maintains his salary cut lol.

Then Wii U soars to gaming heaven.

wii u will start doing its vita impression in a few months. nintendo really spent all their big ones at launch (monhun, mario, nintendoland, dqx beta)

mario kart and animal crossing wii u probably just got fast-tracked though.

I can't help shake the feeling that the Wii U's own worst enemy is the 3DS. Not really in the sense that if you took the machine away the Wii U is still the best selling machine, but in the sense that the hype behind the 3DS is at such levels that's it's more desirable and people only have so much to spend. Didn't Iwata say something recently about how people plonking down 20,000 Yen in such numbers was unheard of? So can you imagine people going out to get a 3DS and also slapping down the cash for a Wii U at the same time?

Wii U price drop to $250 for Deluxe model

Mario Galaxy 3 and Smash 4 drop this holiday

I hope so. If there aren't a boat load of titles near the end of their development for Wii U then what the hell have Nintendo's first parties been working on with the console front for the past 2 or 3 years? They sure as hell weren't working on Wii titles!

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The good thing about Wii U right now is that the main 2 games ( plus MH) are still selling good amounts. This should help a bit in the next weeks. At least it shouldn't drop off like Vita.

Only if Iwata is too scared to quit and so wants to be fired.

In 2011 PSV did even worse than this years PS3, ~40k (week52).

When is the next Japanese Nintendo Direct? February?
Hopefully soon and actually introduces new games.
If there just gonna reshuffle their release window then they shouldn't bother with a Direct especially if its something like
Pikmin 3 April, Game & Wario June Wonderful 101 September and Don't forget we have Nintendo Land and NSMB 2 and Mass Effect 3 plus Batman "All new content" edition.

that's literally been the format of almost every nintendo direct so far

don't expect any new game announcements. at the most we'll get concrete dates on pikmin, g&w and wonderful 101 with some new footage. wait til e3 for new game announcements.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
When is the next Japanese Nintendo Direct? February?

I think we were due one in December, but I'm guessing Nintendo will wait now until after their financial briefing (due end of this month.)
If I recall, they did something similar previously too.

Actually that's not quite true. There have been quite a few key announcements and reveals detailed right up through to the announcement of the 3DS XL post E3 last year.

Since then, though, they've been literally recycling details about a handful of games.

The concerning part being that Nintendo vowed they learned their lessons from the 3DS launch woes.

i think most of the lessons to take away from the 3ds's initial (and ongoing) problems were too late to change for the wii u. the similar name and design causing brand confusion being a big one.

I think Wii U numbers are going to keep falling week by week. No new releases in sight, stores around me are flooded with consoles (both new and used), amazon has started lowering the price on it ever so slightly, lackluster to negative reviews by many Japanese gamers is not spreading good word of mouth, etc etc etc.

They did... somewhat. Just not all the lessons, apparently.

How? The 2 key issues for 3DS's lackluster launch sales were due to price point and game titles.

Yes the WiiU launched at a much more reasonable price than the 3DS, but it wasn't low enough to reach the impulse buy threshold that the 360 and PS3 are already at. And as for the launch lineup, Japan's may have been passable with MH3, but in America it was essentially just NintendoLand, SMBU, ZombiU, and a lot of multiplatform games. Had WiiU launched with Pikmin, maybe it would have been passable here as well. Nintendo is going to have to claw themselves out of the launch rut yet again....they did it with 3DS, but do they have the resources to do it again?

Oh yes, there was also that. Wii 2 or Super Wii would have been a Billion times better name than Wii U. Product differentiation how does it work?

The holiday season is about to end. All platforms will fall after next week.

Nintendo really need to fix their Wii U problem fast. 3DS did well at least.

What can they do? Western pubs currently aren't giving a shit, I doubt they will want to price cut like 3ds again, and they are stuck with the hardware they have. They seem to be focussing on Japan so maybe they'll get software rolling there and be OK.

These would have been relatively simply to change if they really wanted to. They had 18 months from their lukewarm and widely chastised E3 reveal to rename/brand it and ensure clear marketing.

In fact, it's nicknamed the "Super Wii" in some promotional materials. I'm not sure why they chickened out on that name.

PS3 is doing some horrible numbers. What? Only ~50k even with a new PS3 revision.
Out of curiousity, why are you expecting the new PS3 Slim to increase hardware sales when the price is the same , and when the revision gives no clear advantage over the older PS3 Slim?

I didn´t expect an increase. I´m just stating the fact that there has been a sharp decline compared to last year and that the new model wasn´t of any significant help.

Are you actually surprised a system at its seventh holiday is seeing declines?

It had 2 atrocius first years and a userbase of barely 8.5m. There actually is alot room to improve.
