NPD December 2012 Sales Results [Up2: Xbox 360, All Nintendo Hardware, NSMB Wii U]

Looks like the 360 is going to take 1st in the US this gen. Good for MS.

If they handled things correctly going forward, and with a sprinkling of luck, they could still overtake the PS2 and become the best selling home console there of all time.

Someone confirmed that at one point, I think...

Yikes, if so. If Vita SKUs are outselling Wii U ones, it has to be at least somewhat worrisome for Nintendo. I wonder how the 360/PS3 did at the same point in their lifecycle relative to the home consoles already out, although I suppose it wouldn't be an entirely fair comparison since this generation is much better sales-wise (collectively) than the previous one.

Wherefore art thou, Nintendo? Software and hardware. Pachter's guess of 750k for the WiiU is off by at least 50k. Yet he'll eat well tonight. I hope at this time next year we're wringing our hands over the sales numbers for PS4 and Xbox.
We'll surely be bickering and hollering about one of them at the least.

Generally you don't wait until your product is dead to release a new one unless you hate yourself.

Indeed, it's an impressive figure for this point in the loifecycle, but it's still down from last year's 1.73m. It would be foolish for MS not to have something new out for the 2013 holiday.

who needs 720 when 360 selling so well still....

The people buying consoles this late in the game drag attached rates down. They're not who you make a lot of money off of. Plus I think sales of the 360 are down hundreds of thousands. That's not the direction you want to be heading.

Even though the holidays are over, consumers can still get the best all-in-one entertainment experience starting at $99 with a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at $14.99/month. The Xbox 360 Entertainment For All Plan offers access to the best entertainment experiences including TV, movies, music, and sports, plus the hottest blockbuster games – all in one package. *

Lol with how hard MS is pushing this deal, that Xbox 720 payment plan is all but guaranteed

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Anything below 500-550K for Wii U would be a clear disappointment IMO.

Anything above is in the barely acceptable range where either side trying to spin the numbers as great or terrible is being dishonest.

360 is less than 1.8 mill behind PS2 in the same time frame.
Can't wait for those streams to cross. Get the popcorn ready!

It's virtually assured. Microsoft will be able to lowball the PS4 entry price by at least $100-150 up front with a 2-year XBL commitment roped in.
The only catch is whether or not there is certainty on PS4 pricing by the time the next Xbox launches. I sort of doubt that will be the case.

Microsoft owns the US, I know its a broken record but its remarkable just how massive MS's growth from the Xbox to the 360 has been. Not that it means anything, but crazy to see Microsoft take over as the leading console from the Wii later this year.

If the 360 outsold the PS3 by at least 750,00 in US in December, the PS3 must have really knocked it out of the park in Europe if the report from the PS3 sales at 77 million. Overtakes 360 thread is true.

Not great news for the WiiU

Not really. It's not dishonest since: it's the first new hardware in 6 years, there was stock on the shelves, it was released during the holiday season, and the first couple million should be fruit lying on the ground you just pick up. There should not have been stock on the shelves considering the numbers shipped.

Maybe NSMB Wii U charted in the Top 10 console games.

Xbox 360 held seven of the top 10 console game titles including: “Halo 4,” “Assassin’s Creed III,” “Just Dance 4,” “NBA 2K13,” “Far Cry 3,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2” and “Madden NFL 13.” (Source: NPD Group, December 2012)

So the Vita versions of Madden / FIFA outsold the Wii U version?

NPD has repeatedly said that the order of the consoles isn't reflective of their relative sales.

Despite this, they seem to make an added effort to make it seem like a plausible ordering in terms of relative sales.

Sony felt that in a huge way this gen, and I'm betting Nintendo is worried about it now with the Wii U and the impending neXtBox. If they don't find a way to attract casuals and core gamers back, they're going to get destroyed(by Sony as well is my guess).

Having seen many numbers since they started doing this, they're definitely, for sure reflective of sales order by platform.

The Wii U version of FIFA is crap.

So is the Vita version.

I find it almost impossible to believe that the Wii U version of multiplatform games are getting outsold by the Vita. That just seems completely nuts.

edit: ah okay so its not in order? even though it seems like it is? weird but makes sense.

There hasn't been one case where we got numbers and it didn't match the order. So I don't really believe them.

To continue to respond to the uninformed comments on the other thread about what the Wii did versus the Wii U's start, a few facts here:

- Wii was $100 cheaper than the main 360 SKU and $350 cheaper than PS3's at launch. Wii U is $100 more expensive than PS3 and 360 this holiday.

- Wii was supply constrained since its launch, and all throughout 2007 practically. Wii outsold both the 360 and PS3 COMBINED in the first half of 2007. Wii U is widely available in any store right now, and in it's launch period, has already at LEAST been doubled by 360's total.

Not a good start for Nintendo.

I'm more excited to see 3DS numbers rather than WiiU numbers. 3DS had a lot of fantastic deals and the MK bundle, so I'm wondering how that did overall.

Not expecting much for WiiU. MS continues to dominate.

So let me get this straight.

The 360 is in its 7th year. Down 22% in sales from last December.

And more than doubled the Wii U and/or PS3.

Fudge cakes. That's amazing shit.

The payment plan really work as it seem. I hope customer who got this plan will move on next-gen.
Or MS might give some alternate way to upgrade fee with same plan. Like upgrade with your mobile.

Ugh. Man, that top ten list is really just a sad representation of what we Americans demand. For how many years, now, has Call of Duty topped our charts? No wonder developers are taking a streamlined approach; These sales are indicative of our wants.

Shitty boring generic top 10. Us Americans sure do have bad taste :(

Also it's goddamn hilarious that Wii U games are getting outsold by Vita and PC retail titles.

I knows it's just one city, but apparently Madden is sold out everywhere where I live. A buddy's girlfriend called everywhere to try and get it for him this xmas
