Pokémon Community Thread 2: "This is the Real Power of Johto..."

The major reason is the legendary.

In Black, you catch Reshiram. In White, you catch Zekrom.

In Black 2, you catch Zekrom. In White 2, you catch Reshiram.

If you pick the same color, you get both legendaries. If you swap, you end up with two of the same Pokémon.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will get White 2 eventually.

Is there something i can read to understand what all that means? nature/ev/iv that is
I wrote an introduction to competitive Pokemon that might be helpful:

Is there another place to find tiers and tourney legal pokemon besides smogon?

I haven't touched a legendary pokemon in a good 10 years because apart from catching it, I wouldn't be able to train it to use competitively with friends. To have a list of "legal" is legendaries could help breathe some life in our battles.

http://assets2.pokemon.com/assets/cms/pdf/op/tournaments/2013/Play_Pokemon_VG_Rules_and_Formats.pdf

But the list there is built with doubles and 3v3 Singles in mind where you have a sideboard.

Is it just a Skill Link Cloyster?

I thought almost everyone and their grandmother already had one of those. At least going by online randoms. :/
Yeah. Nothing special you couldn't RNG yourself but I assume the IVs will be 31 in everything but the two required for HP Grass. So nice to have something that saves you the work. Most likely in a Cherish Ball and OT Abram.

These are fantastic.

Tempted by Cubone, but here's to hoping he does one of my MORE favorites. Plus, real-pic January ain't over yet!

Also, Chatot is banned??! Why? I always thought that bird was garbo

Chatot has that thing where you can record a message for an attack that's why. He is absolute garbage but they don't want kids to hear "dicks dicks dicks" or whatever people would record.

Another move that's banned is Sky Drop, but that's because of a glitch associated with it.

Unrelated, but Cofagrigus was banned from GTS trading under its default name for a while, because of word filters. Yeah...

So I dunno anything about RNG abuse or anything, cause I'm an idiot, but is there anything Nintendo can do against it next gen?
I mean, I dunno if they have a problem with i, but assuming they did.

The basic concept behind it is that all the games use a formula to generate sequences of pseudorandom numbers, which are used to determine various things, including the generation of random Pokemon. This formula is 'seeded' at the start of a game (using the current time of the system, for example), and generates a new number to use after certain actions are taken. As long as those steps are known and repeatable (since the formula will produce the same sequence for the same seed, hence RNGing relying heavily on starting the game at a certain time), then there isn't much that they can do.

Of course, RNGing may be more/less difficult with the next games, but we won't know anything until they actually come. What can probably be assumed is that if nothing happens with the games, the other attack vector will be through the cart's connection to GTS, which is already quite exploitable.

I don't know why people have a thing against RNG abuse or why people want GameFreak to remove the ability to transfer previous gen Pokemon to Gen 6. It's like asking more people to Pokegen their Pokemon in the future.

I'm guessing if RNG breeding is considered "impossible" in BW2, I'd imagine future games will follow w/e algorithms are in use there. Dunno if the same can be applied to wild Pokemon.

If they can stop any GTS exploits, won't things as simple as the Secret IDs be harder to determine? There wouldn't be any ways to view the Pokémon off of the game, would there? Or can stuff like that be viewed from 3DS game saves?

I don't have any idea how much can be done with the 3DS or its games. Has any of it been cracked?

I personally have no issue with RNG manipulation and say more power to anyone willing to figure it out.

Just wondering if this is something Nintendo would go for.

I don't really know anything about why RNG breeding is considered impossible in BW2 but if they use the same thing in gen 6 I'm willing to bet it'd be figured out eventually. There's just no real reason to waste the effort on it now since there is no benefit to breeding in BW2 as opposed to BW1 which is already cracked.

It pays to be stubborn. Not one but TWO shiny Ralts in a single egg batch! :D

edit:

So team I'll be raising:

Gardevoir - Special attacker
Blastoise - Bulky w/rapid spin
Butterfree - Quiver dance/support
Forretress - entry hazards/tank
Anorith - Misc

Any recommendations for the final member? Looking to fill any type gaps, otherwise I'll be using a Galvantula, or maybe a Volcarona.

The 3DS has not been cracked and no emulator exists for it so whatever they do will make it impossible for probably a good number of months. Maybe a year. They can also complicate it like they have for BW2. Something about multiple timer0 seeds or mumbo jumbo I am not nearly smart enough to understand. Most players currently prefer to breed in BW as a result.

If RNGing is gone, expect people to start hacking more.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TIME I SPENT ON THAT???

probably no more than one or two Starbucks sessions but still

instead of novels i write pokemon articles on my macbook at starbucks

I would say probably a physical attacker since you seem to be lacking one. Or like a Choice Band/Scarf one. Maybe like a Nidoking, it can either be a banded one or a mixed scarfer.

How possible would it be to get a hacked Pokemon into an official tournament? Is this something people would opt for or would they just have to settle for imperfect Pokemon?

Anyway it might be interesting to see people have to start actually breeding Pokemon again. I remember frequenting the WiFi board on Smogon back when gen 4 first started. I just don't really want to have to breed any more Hidden Power Pokemon like that.

I once bred a perfect modest hp ice 70 dugtrio for someone on smogon. then when I opened up my own trading thread I got inundated with people trying to get a piece and eventually just gave up. I still have it somewhere on my Diamond cart I believe. That was a pain the butt to get. Probably like 5 days straight of breeding for 6-8 hours a day. smh.

I'm basically doing that now in BW2 since I don't have BW. It sucks. Most of the benefits of the new breeding additions is neutered by the fact that IVs are set when an egg is generated (so no more locking in a nature/ability/gender to soft reset for IVs).

The only thing keeping me sane is that I'm using RNG'd parents from previous games whenever possible.

Damn, that sucks. Hopefully you don't have to breed anything to complicated.

It's not recommended to RNG eggs in BW2 because egg generation is bugged - the first egg you receive after starting up the game/soft resetting will always be identical save for IVs, so you can only RNG eggs with one particular ability/nature etc. This is because the game generates a random seed for the egg RNG upon starting up the game, but then overwrites it with a different seed generated when you start a new game.

Also, the RNG hardware parameters vary much more in BW2 compared to BW1, making it harder to hit the seed you want. It's still possible, just more frustrating.

I remember reading on smogon saying a certain line of code is missing for rng breeding which is why it's near impossible or something.

I'd be ok if they got rid of it while simultaneously realizing that IVs are stupid anyway.

I can't see them getting rid of IVs because of the whole 'every Pokémon is unique' thing, and that even same species Pokémon have different stats. It's good that it also means the players that put more time into the game have an advantage, but it's a shame that breeding can be so boring.

Maybe if XY do have some sort of DNA theme there could be a way of altering an existing Pokémon's IVs post-game.

Hi from the newbie btw, I've been a big fan of the games since gen 1 made its way to the UK :p.

But thought people don't like pokeyman wearing clothes

It depends. There's a right way to do it, and there's a wrong way to do it. It's mostly "accessories" that are okay. Overdressing is bad; that Lopunny is on the verge of it.

Hi from the newbie btw, I've been a big fan of the games since gen 1 made its way to the UK :p.

Hello! We've had several new people post since the X/Y reveal. I hope all of you continue to join in on discussions!

Hmm I always had one problem with natures and all the in-depth Pokémon modifications :/ Well I don't really see how they could fix it so my comment is rather void though one thing that always bothered me about natures and whatnot is that there seem to be one ideal configuration for each Pokémon which essentially makes any other of the same Pokémon worthless for competitive plays. Like last week I saw two friends of mine breeding dozens of Scyther's till they they had one with all the right values and released all the others, what I personally would like is that you would have a chance with every Pokémon if you play smart (not cheap!) instead of letting the one win who invests the most time in breeding the perfect Pokémon. Though I guess the whole thing just doesn't work differently aslong as it's still based on a rock-paper-scissors system sadly :(

Also is there a counter somewhere where I can see when I can access the Dream World again? Yesterday morning my 3DS's date glitched itself back to 01.01.2011 somehow and now I can't access the Dream World obviously o.o

you still have to play smart. But it's like having the muscle to carry out your technique if you will.

So I've been continuing my Nuzlocke run of HeartGold, been taking it real slow. It feels more like playing chess than Pokemon. I'm at Whitney and I can't seem to figure out a workable plan, normally I'd just have Harrison (Bellsprout) poison her Miltank but the damn thing has a lum berry or whatever cures it. Going to have to grind a bit I suppose. George continues to be my MVP and Peter continues to suck. Yea he learned Nightshade but that doesn't help with my current problem in the slightest. Gandalf and Bilbo continue to be the heart and soul of this team. I'm worried about getting a water type, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I don't know of any counters. I think after fixing your clock you will have to wait at least 24 hours before the Dream World will work again. Try to sync after fixing the time, and try again 24 hours from that.

Whoa funnily enough it worked again right after I read your post even though I tried it already when I wrote my first post o.o Oh well I'm happy :) Oh and is there any recommended level I should evolve my Growlithe?

Hmm alright I see, I guess that makes sense if you put it like that. I honestly never bothered with online-playing as I know I will most likely get crushed but I guess there is no way around some careful selection and training then :(

Umm okay I brought a Pokémon to sleep but now when I try to log-in to Global Link it says:

Processing your membership information.

Please try accessing the site later.

Is that normal? I just registered two days ago.

I'm not sure.

I guess wait and try again in a few hours. :(

Oh and is there any recommended level I should evolve my Growlithe?

I would wait at least to level 43 since Outrage would be useful on the Dragon-types later in the game. It learns Flare Blitz at 45, but that is mostly a competitive move. Flamethrower is usually better in-game since there is no recoil damage.

But if you want the more powerful move and can heal the recoil, Flare Blitz is great. Once you evolve, you'll lose access to learning it again!

Thanks for your help as always Ike! :D And yeah I guess this is the only thing I can do, Google didn't help much though what I found funny is that it worked on the first day o.o

And okay then I will wait till level 43 or 45, thanks again!

EDIT: Well talk about randomness, I just now tried it with Google Chrome instead of Firefox and it works D: Oh well buggy things are buggy! xD

It's now 20.

Oh, and Dream World relies on Flash - a botched Flash install for non-ActiveX browsers will affect Firefox and Opera. A botched install for ActiveX browsers will affect Internet Explorer (non-Windows 8/RT) and any Trident shells. If Google Chrome or IE10 has a botched Flash plug-in (shouldn't happen), things go bad very quickly. Just to remember next time.

In my experience pokes don't need to have perfect values to be viable online, as long as some thought has been put into the team building and moveset (the actual fun stuff :p). Natures and EVs do make a big difference though. It's actually kinda fun to try something different to the standard sets, or use pokes that aren't used much.

I remember reading an article where someone used an eviolite Scyther and got kinda creative with the EVs, and it was a pretty unique team. I think it was on Nugget Bridge.

Heh. I almost always get a bit annoyed when people want me to start delving into RNG and stuff like that. I just want to battle for fun.

That makes me wonder what if Eviolite is usable for anything that had a pre-evolution...
