Pokémon Community Thread 2: "This is the Real Power of Johto..."

How possible would it be to get a hacked Pokemon into an official tournament? Is this something people would opt for or would they just have to settle for imperfect Pokemon?

Anyway it might be interesting to see people have to start actually breeding Pokemon again. I remember frequenting the WiFi board on Smogon back when gen 4 first started. I just don't really want to have to breed any more Hidden Power Pokemon like that.
You mean I don't have to spend 100s of hours riding my bike up and down waiting for eggs to crack?

Oh my...

I think this Victini is more evil.

Long time no see.

I remember when I had my last vivid nightmare—yes, it involved the Tails Doll. I think it got mixed in with recent memories of watching the Angry Nintendo Nerd (AVGN, I know) Castlevania II video; I soon thought one of the jiggers in that game was stalking me. Then it morphed into that fucking Doll and shit happened.

These days, though, I'm a totally different kind of guy.

Apparently the hack checker they use online is very poor when it comes to hacking. Some people have said you can just keep trying your same hacked Pokemon and eventually get through. If you finish really high in the tournament standings though, you're likely to be disqualified when they go through all the teams. This is apparently what has happened in previous ones online.

For EV training, if i stick an exp share on my level 1 and just grind litwicks with a high level. The exp share will let my level 1 get EVs without having to switch out to it right?

You'll get EV's faster if you give him a Power item or even a Macho Brace and just switch out.

I'll do that. I used 10 Calcium on my level 1 Ralts, then levels up, but his Special attack didn't go up 25 points, is there a system in place to prevent abuse at low level?

You don't get all the points at once. It balances it out over time. 100 EVs will eventually turn into 25 stat points by the time you reach level 100.

In my experience pokes don't need to have perfect values to be viable online, as long as some thought has been put into the team building and moveset (the actual fun stuff :p). Natures and EVs do make a big difference though. It's actually kinda fun to try something different to the standard sets, or use pokes that aren't used much.

I remember reading an article where someone used an eviolite Scyther and got kinda creative with the EVs, and it was a pretty unique team. I think it was on Nugget Bridge.

Okay alright reading this I have to say you kind of do give me hope that I actually might have fun playing online. I avoided it so far because I had the idea I would get crushed at all times but I might have to try to see what I can do as I do care about team-building and my move-sets so who knows I could have a chance! Thank you for the encouragement, the nature part sounds quite doable even for me :D

Heh. I almost always get a bit annoyed when people want me to start delving into RNG and stuff like that. I just want to battle for fun.

That makes me wonder what if Eviolite is usable for anything that had a pre-evolution...

This is pretty much how I feel aswell and it's nice to see that I'm not alone with that mindset :) I do want to try RNG'ing out once however whenever I get a used DS Lite just so I can say I tried it and know how it works.

Basically, the game tracks the number of EVs your Pokemon has. It throws that number into a formula to generate the stats you see on the screen. The stats formula is scaled by level so it's normal that you're not seeing much difference at low levels.

Very possible. Just with RNGing it's not really worth the risk or community backlash. If RNGing was on I would expect it to be very common.

Hmm I always had one problem with natures and all the in-depth Pokémon modifications :/ Well I don't really see how they could fix it so my comment is rather void though one thing that always bothered me about natures and whatnot is that there seem to be one ideal configuration for each Pokémon which essentially makes any other of the same Pokémon worthless for competitive plays. Like last week I saw two friends of mine breeding dozens of Scyther's till they they had one with all the right values and released all the others, what I personally would like is that you would have a chance with every Pokémon if you play smart (not cheap!) instead of letting the one win who invests the most time in breeding the perfect Pokémon. Though I guess the whole thing just doesn't work differently aslong as it's still based on a rock-paper-scissors system sadly :(

Also is there a counter somewhere where I can see when I can access the Dream World again? Yesterday morning my 3DS's date glitched itself back to 01.01.2011 somehow and now I can't access the Dream World obviously o.o
There are usually about 2 - 4 good natures for most Pokemon. Having a chance with any Pokemon would just make it a dice roll :p IVs are really the stupid part about Pokemon. They're supposed to help make every Pokemon unique but all it does is make most Pokemon worthless.

I'm having this issue a lot in W2 :p

Currently going back into Dream Radar to see if I can actually play far enough so that it becomes useful to me. I sort of left it behind after getting my Riolu for my White 2 playthrough <_<;

Really don't like waiting 2 hours between plays...

Q: So, being able to name your Pokémon is part of that design?
Masuda: That’s right. We had the idea of being able to name your Pokémon from the very beginning.
Sugimori: We were discussing whether it would be better to have 3 save files or to be able to name all 151 of your Pokémon, and everyone was unanimous in saying “It’s better to be able to name them all!”

So much better :D
*cries*

Although I do name each and every member of my team :) (though GF isn't exactly lacking in cart space nowadays...)

Although, I wonder how much space nicknaming takes?

In RB:
Name: 10 bytes
10 * 6 (for team)
+ 20 * 12 * 10 (20 PC boxes, 12 per box, 10 per name)
= 2460 bytes (about 2.4 kb)

That's not counting any extra bookkeeping required to manage those names, which would be in the ROM itself, rather than saved on the cart - I'm not sure how much space it would take overall on the save, since the RAM size was 16kB.

Maybe they saw that if they had nicknaming, that extra 7.2 kB (if they had 3 save files) would push them over budget on save space (45% of the total space devoted solely to nicknames would've been a lot, admittedly), so rather than cut down on the maximum amount of Pokemon you could catch, they decided to use one save file instead.

Which is ironic since it would also help drive sales as well since you can't share one cart if you don't want to erase your save file

In Generation V games, the characters in the nicknames are stored as UTF-16 code pages. 2 bytes per character - around 20 bytes + terminator if I'm not wrong. (If you somehow exported a save file from a Gen V game to a computer, try opening the save file in a text editor and have it read in Unicode (little endian). You'll be surprised at what you can see.)

Generation III and IV might have used their own (global) code pages except for Korean games (this had to wait until Gen V and true Unicode), and Gen I and II are definitely using their own code page, different for Japanese, International, and Korean. No trading between different code pages.

Mind you, this is not variable-length encoding like UTF-8, so don't expect magic on Pokémon nicknames, since it's already running up to the limit. Trainer names, on the other hand...

Greetings, PokeGAF :). I'm a complete newbie to Pokemon...a few hours of Pokemon Conquest (so far) aside. The Pokemon Direct and X/Y announcement have finally got me interested, and so I ordered a copy of White 1. Hopefully soon I'll be able to intelligently discuss it with you all :).
