Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Do Virgin have any infrastructure to livestream matches, if they decided to do proper tournaments?

This seems appropriate today.

At this rate I'd say Halo 3 probably has one more year in it. Been on its last lags for a while now. Can't imagine that many people will be playing it with a new console coming out soon and the next Halo game. Then Reach shortly thereafter.

What part of the Halo 2 infrastructure is actually housed at Microsoft? It's P2P, so there's no actual game hosting, there's no stat tracking or anything like that. What sort of hardware would it actually require?

Just for notes:

Halo 2 Xbox - Nov 9 2004 - April 15th, 2010 (5 years, 5 months)
Halo 2 PC - May 17 2007 - February 15th, 2013 (5 years, 8 months)

They almost had the same exact lifespan. :/

edit: wwm0nkey discoverd a long time ago that searching MS's website showed Halo 2 PC's support ending on October 9th, 2012.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=33877118&postcount=16386

If that had been an actual intended date, they would have had the same lifespan within just a few days.

@Barrow Roll and the other Halo 2 Vista boosters: I am in. Time to get the last few achievements. :D I want to get Halo 2 on 100%.

PM me.

For the love of god, people: If you want to do this PM me so I can organize a list and get a turn-order of things people need so we can get things done. :/

Some folks are going to flip when they announce Halo 3's servers going offline.

Which they will.

Before November 2014.

Just reading the bulletin properly (just skimmed over it before to see what was going on about H2:V)... A bit suprising that they didn't bother to mention the download size for SO. Almost out of room on my HDD.

Tsk tsk tsk. I see that some of you guys still don't trust 343. Come on guys, give them a chance. When has a subsidiary of a major corporation ever let you down?

Halo 2 Vista could've been something great. They just needed to get rid of the, y'know, Vista part.

Sure it hasn't mattered for the last couple of years, but by then it was already far too late. Port coulda been better done as well.

Either way, I pour one out for you H2. You had it rough.

Edit: Put Halo PC on Steam already. I lost my disc and CD key.

Bulletin's got me excited for the future of the franchise. What are they going to cut next? Civil War surgeons could learn a lot from 343...except in the Civil War they only cut off the bad things.

So I see they've killed another. At least there is still Halo 1. You will never take that away from us. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Not as long as we can manually join a server.

I'd be willing to trial this sort of thing but to me there are a number of factors why things like load outs emerged from Bunge and were kept by 343:

1. Latency online, such a factor in so many mechanics and design or development decisions e.g. Halo 2 or 3 were horrible at allowing me to spawn at the start and my team mate being 2-3 strides behind from a lesser spawn picks up the power up or weapon off spawn literally while they are running behind me. In a USA host dominated game this is a very common occurrence. Load outs smooth this out for team mates and enemies.
This is a non-issue. Very rarely do two people try to grab a power-up at the exact same time and unless it's really laggy (teleporting around levels of lag) it's not a big issue at all. It's definitely not a reason to exclude power-ups.

2. With the sheer number of power ups you'd have the same random experience when encountering players. Same goes for spawns or running into enemies after those initial spawns or obj rounds have passed. Once things are in play you often do not know what is around the corner, again team communication or player awareness is paramount. To me no different in load out or power up here, just load outs even things out for every one and provide more hands on time for all players.
What sheer number of power-ups? Maps in the past never had more than two of them on them at the same time. It's not like you constantly run into people with power-ups. Every 2-3 minutes (Whatever the spawn time is on the power-up) you know that there's a chance that you will run into someone with a power-up, especially if you see that's it's already picked up. Once the person with it dies, there's at least a couple of minutes without it in play. That doesn't even begin to compare with the amount of AAs that are used during Reach and especially Halo 4 matches. You never know what kind the other person will use, while with power-ups you can know that every 2-3 minutes there will be a single person with a specific power-up running around probably near the place where he picked it up.

3. I use camo AA offensively far more than defensively, same for jetpack, arguable for PV too.
Yeah, it's cute that you use it offensively, but the entire concept behind it doesn't encourage that at all like power-ups do. You've got all the time in the world to use your AA and there's zero incentive to go on offense. Sure, there's people that use them offensively, but they can be used very effectively on defense. More so than offensively with most of the AAs. Camo, Armor Lock, Hard Light Shield, Drop Shield, Regen Field and Auto Turret are all used nearly exclusively defensively. The rest of the AAs can be used in both defense and offense, but I can't think of a single one that actively encourages you to go and attack the other team.

Awww, poor H2V.

If it's 20 max and they're not willing to push it, then fine, kill it. Yah fools.
It and Halo 1 should have been on Steam years ago.

343 shouldn't ignore PC. I'm sure they're mandated to make the 360/NextBox appealing though. So perhaps it's Phil Spencer who should be ... talked to instead.

It was but I still get into Team Slayer and TU Slayer games very fast each night. What completely sucks though is I NEVER get to play any of the DLC maps. Ever. Such a waste of money.
Why would you want to play Reach's DLC maps in the first place? dey bad
But then again, you also play Team Slayer.

Showing a friend who was a big Halo 3 fan Halo 4 for the first time he has been completely cut off from the media.

So good.

For Reach, BTB DLC is the real bummer. Instead of getting an opportunity to play (since Anny BTB is gone) Ridgeline, Breakneck, and Highlands, we get Heavies' variants and more chances for Spire and Boneyard. Oh well, another line of mistakes.

1. Happened constantly on maps like The Pit sniper spawn, or rockets longshore offense rounds. Rpegarding objective with say 4 rounds symmetrical like the pit this can happen 2 or 3 times a match, very common for Aussie
On USA host. Think about not getting sniper 3 times a match on the pit, ugh.

2. Take all the AA's, tactical and support options now how many do you plan on making power ups? This leads to either a watered down sandbox for Infinity or perhaps likeable settings for classic or slayer pro.

3. Regarding slayer perhaps but regarding objective I disagree. Take Ragnarok 2 flag for example, radar in with good timing near waterfall then sprint jump on to the angle side, crouch and go invisible before your head is even in view. Take out other camo campers or defenders and you get a clean six to take the flag through either man cannon or team goose it. Just because you dislike one element of camo does not mean other players don't have other uses for those mechanics. That's just it player choice is there while maximising everyone's ability to use or possess weapons or abilities etc.The rest is player creativity, skills and teamwork.

What the fuck is this?

This is progress. I'm honestly surprised MW3 didn't sneak up above it.

Also, isn't this the lowest a Halo game has EVER been during a normal run? IE Reach/3 etc., are lower now but I don't think they ever fell to 4th while they were the most current Halo game on the market. I'm not even sure 3 ever dropped below second a full two or three years after launch.

Won't be surprised to see MW3 hop over soon. And once it releases, GTA V will definitely jump it.

Boggles my mind. If at that point they decided, hey the population is still very healthy, therefore putting in forced DLC just makes it drop like a rock. But now with Halo 4 out, why not go nuts with things? Waiting it out to find a game sure as hell beats out getting Banshee bombed in Renegade, fighting the framerate in Wayont (these two should've been ditched) , cross mapping in Boneyard, or playing god-awful Heavies. And with Heavies getting pushed down our throats yet again only made getting Assault or playing CTF in there all but rare. GG 343.

Should we start a pool bet for the day that Halocharts reports less than 50K players as the peak population? I'll take Feb. 7th for $5.

Heavies in Reach was just 343 testing a beta for Dominion in 4.

Hey, EU loves soccer (football).

I don't consider 4th overall on Xbox Live bad by any means. Wish it was #1? Sure. I can still find games though.

I've been playing Reach almost daily over the past week, and it's not unusual for some of the lists to get that low.

343 needs to consolidate. I feel like I should start a twitter hashtag or something.
