Plus, the western scale goes from 8 to 10. 8 is crap. 9 is good. 10 is really great.

I know where you're coming from. For me games attract me based on style and gameplay, and I am willing to cut a lot of slack on story and character development. Taking it out of this thread's context, there are deeper, better written male characters than Asura, Sam Gideon, and Garcia Hotspur, but the design of the characters makes them among my favs from this gen. Applying it to my taste in film, El Mariachi (Banderas version) and The Bride come to mind.

Lightning being #1 isn't necessarily surprising. She is somewhat popular in Japan and those who don't like her are (like Final Fantasy fandom in general) completely split on who and what they actually do like.

But if you read the previews of gaming journalists published today in "reality," the vast majority are quite positive. Even the user reviews on both games are positive on Metacritic; more so than later Mass Effect games.

Well, to be fair, considering how much of a failure SE have been with console development, it was either they made a sequel to FFXIII or they do nothing. Getting sequels doesn't really prove anything.
You could release a mediocre game and slap a FF title on it, and it'll still sell reasonably well. That's how dedicated the fanbase is.

I used to think this, that it would just be like the VIII of this generation but idk now. I think the addition of two sequels + no other console entries has really cemented the bitterness of a lot of FF fans this generation and it will take a very long time for it to wear off, if it ever does.

I'm fairly sure the backlash is universal.
XIII has one of my favorite soundtracks in the entire series and the graphics are beautiful, but that didn't stop the story and characters (besides Sazh, who I expected to be a barret level stereotype once they revealed the afro chocobo) from being a trainwreck with no villain other than the gubment and a combat system that left zero room for experimentation. All the Final Fantasy games that are looked back upon fondly have one aspect that really stands out that makes them iconic (Vivi, Sephiroth, the Judges, Kefka) and XIII had nothing really like that.
