Using Sixaxis on your PC? Stay away from MotionInJoy

So customers can use their Sony controllers with steam games? There is no reason for them to bother. What would be their incentive?

Because people typically buy extra controllers to use with their PC's, and Sony turns a profit on peripherals.

Sorry to hear the OP has had some problems, but for me, MotionJoy is one of my most essential PC apps for years(currently using MJ and BT driver versions 0.7.1001). No issues for me at all, especially what the OP describes. Using my DualShock 3 via Bluetooth is amazing for PC gaming.

In fact, the only reason I'm typing this message right now is because my DS3 ran out of juice in the middle of a quest on my rig. As soon as it recharges, me, my DS3 and MotionJoy will jump right back into the action.

Official drivers would be awesome, especially if it meant games on the computer getting both a PS3 and 360 UI. I hate that games only have a 360 UI on the PC. They should have both.

I find this hard to believe, as I've spent many an hour searching for alternatives to the malware that is MIJ, and can't find anything. But I'd love to hear more if this is true.

The official signed driver for the controller was bundled inside the PS3 3.41 SDK that got leaked a while back.

I've said it before, that program is practically malware.

It shits up your registry and leaves a ton of junk behind after a uninstall.

Doesn't it send info to china because the people who made the driver are from china?

And they run the online version with ads to pay MS to sign the drivers. They mentioned in an update it runs like $300 a year to keep the program signed, or something.

stop using logic to make sense of things!

I don't think anybody really loves motioninjoy.

But it works, including offline and I can't say I've ever really had a problem. What else are we going to use?

yeah, the main reason its so popular is that everything else (including the leaked Sony drivers) sucks.

It never opened my web browser either. Used it with no problems besides calibrating my dualshock 3 every now and then. If not motionjoy, what other alternatives are there?

Also make sure to try the local offline version?

Online!

Offline...ah much better!

Considering how well it works in games, I'm more than happy with it. Note that I don't use anything bluetooth, so that might be a different set of problems.

I've never had an issue. I don't care that there are ads inside the app itself. It's never opened other programs or had pop ups or anything of that sort. I use USB mode only and without it I wouldn't have played some PC games.

And like everyone else has said, there is no alternative.

I stay away from MIJ because it's a worthless piece of shit that doesn't work.

Yeah I stopped using it too a while ago and just went out and bought cheapt gamestop made 360 controllers which is plug and play with pc.

oh my god why didn't I do this from the start?

Your description of MotioninJoy is very different from mine. Maybe you got one that wasn't from the official source and was given a trojan?

My experience with MotionInJoy on two Windows laptops (well, one Windows laptop and a MacBook Pro boot camped on Windows) lead me to purchase an Xbox 360 pad for my gaming PC. It only worked about half the time for me. And when it did work, I had issues with analog sensitivity, button mapping, etc.

Isn't there an alternative hanging around, or did I imagine that?

No problems here. Have a Dualshock 3 and a Sixaxis for 2 player games hooked up with some generic Bluetooth adapter. I press the PS button and it pretends its a 360 controller for everything without issue.

Valve really needs to release their controller soon. Does anyone have any recommendations other than just a 360 controller for a PC gamepad?

Edit: any special steps for the offline mode? When I click offline it doesn't work at all for me.
Other PC controller threads have recommended the Logitech F710 which has the capability to switch to using XInput which is what the 360 controller uses. I can't say anything about it personally but the reception around here seem to be positive about it. An option for those who like that style of controller and it certainly sounds a lot more appealing than this MotionInJoy nonsense that could potentially pop up.

Just opened it because of this thread and got a pop-up to http://www.sh.com/. I've actually had this site pop-up once before some weeks ago but I didn't know it was MotioninJoy at the time. It's shady as fuck but it's only the second pop-up out of maybe 100 times i've opened the program.

The official release is crap, thats the reason why you have to:

1.-Install MotionJoy 7.01
2.-Install off-line modded version
3.-Play your favorite games without issues!

No ads, no connection to Chinese sites, way better GUI.

Then they lose royalties on game sales because their customers are gaming on PC more often than on PS3. No point in encouraging or opening the doors to their PS customers to become PC gamers.

Sometimes when I boot Windows this webpage will load up in Chrome. Turns out it's Motioninjoy that's doing it. Hopefully the offline version will be better otherwise I'm uninstalling this adware shit and using my Logitech gamepad again.

Edit: Offline version so far is really nice. It's much snappier than the default version.

MotionInJoy is competant enough for its cost ($0) but as others have mentioned, use the offline/local version to avoid the ads BS and online connectivity.

Also, a very important note, when uninstalling the drivers using the Programs and Features app in the Control Panel there WILL still be hidden remnants left in your system as I found out to my dismay by using Windows 7 built in app, pnputil -e from the command line. The -e appended to the command lists/enumerates all of the current driver infs you have in your system.

So run pnputil -e from an Administrator Command Prompt, and check out each published name and driver package provider, look out for motioninjoy's entries and purge them from your system for good by using the -d flag appended to the pnputil command.

E.g.
Code:
C:\pnputil -d oem10.inf
Where oem10.inf is the inf file that represents the driver package of the motioninjoy's drivers' remnants. Repeat with successive inf files.

That'll ensure those buggers are completely wiped out.

Warning:- Ensure the driver inf/package you wipe out are the correct ones (Motioninjoy's are clearly listed).

this is why people should just spend the $30 or $40 for an official xbox360 pad. best supported gamepad i've ever seen on the pc in 20 years.

worth every cent, and one of the best small upgrades anyone can make, imo.

Good luck playing any 2D games or games that require multiple should button inputs. It's not ideal for a number of games.

All sony needs to do is get the sdk drivers, put them out there so anyone can get it, write a small help file and make them xinput compatible. problem solved

See this is annoying, because as far as I can tell, the PS3 controller is the only good Dpad centric, bluetooth rechargeable wireless controller, unless someone has a better alternative (it'd be for playing SNES games and such). I'm waiting on the Surface Pro, and the DS3 was gonna be tossed into the backpack for when I wanted to do some emulating goodness, because it's wireless and outside of having to use MotioninJoy pretty hasslefree.

That said, are there any alternatives that just... Iunno, work? I mean in the sense of installing it as a driver and not a translator, I didn't like the bit of MiJ that needed to have a background program working, I'd much rather it just be a driver with a configuration tool like the Mayflash Wii Classic controller tool.

I've only used MiJ in the past to use the Move navigation controller, so I wasn't aware of those problems with the DS3 part of the driver...

EDIT: Checkiing out this XInput Wrapper, says it has a "DS3 native mode", maybe that's what I'm hoping for...

Why don't Sony want to release drivers for the sixaxis? Considering they must make a killing on these things (they still sell for 100 australian dollars in some parts) wouldn't they want to maximise their sales?

Surely they're not worried about the PC market taking over their console business or something.

But yeah, motionjoy is a pain in the arse.

Sony doesnt like money? I know quite a few people who would easily buy a dualshock 3 for pc gaming if they could get their hands on proper drivers without having to resort to the sdk.

I use MotionJoy almost everyday, but I use the offline version. No problems at all for me. It has a perfect 360 controller emulator as well.

No viruses, no BSODs, no driver issues. Nothing.

I haven't had any of the problems that OP is having, and I've been using it for quite a while now. Sucks you're having to deal with that.

Thanks I will check it out tonight. MotioninJoy only working online and the awful GUI are my two biggest problems with it.

Yeah, the GUI is awful. Gonna try this offline version since it looks a lot sharper. Thanks for the upload, squallmx.

Sony really should just release a driver.

I am sure SOE would use it for there games.

I for one got sick of messing with this POS program and just caved and ordered a USB 360 controller.

I use the offline version, and my firewall to block any online connections.

Seems to work fine. Plus I could never get other drivers to work. >.>

^^^ It looks like it is simply version 2 of the release instead of version 3.

Thanks for the link squallmx. Offline mode is now working perfectly for me.

No. I do not like its D-Pad at all, and MotionJoy allows the DS3 to function perfectly in all pad compatible games, including those with native 360 controller support.

Isn't one of the main appealing factors for PC gaming is that one size does not fit all?

I never had any issues like this when I was using it, but switched because of the small reach of the recharge cable/not wanting to get extra stuff to go wireless. It is also kind of nice not having to remap the buttons on xbox360 controller.

The uninstall is kind of a bother as I had to look up online how to completely get it off my system and it can in what I am guessing is somewhat rare cases cause issues with some games when using the xbox 360 controller.
