Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

The fuck is this hideousness?

Also, what good is it to have a move functionality on the controller if the controller is not a break apart controller? I played that bowling game on PSN with the DS3 and it's not that pleasant to hold to be honest.

Picture of your hands holding the controller. There's no way your thumbs should bump together, unless you're wrongly placing your thumb directly on the top of the stick and that's not how you use convex sticks.

Mine do too, quite often in fact.

Btw: am I the only one who thinks the DS3 is too small? If I grasp it the way I can comfortably reach RL1/2 my thumbs are bumping on each other using both sticks. If I want to avoid that I have to wrench my fingers to reach L/R1. It feels really awkward.

The 360 controller however fits perfectly for me. I also love that its more weighty.

I have quite big hands and I never had a problem. My view is it depends how tightly you grip your controller. The DS should "sit" in your hands with a looser grip while the 360 should be gripped alot tighter.

Anyone thinking there probably is a touchpad on the back? Wouldn't make sense having one on the front and leaving the huge space on the back for nothing.

360 d-pad is bad. Why so aggresive? I believe you're suffering from what you blame him for. Its his opinion that a lot of people share, similar to how everyone agrees that PS3 triggers are bad and 360 triggers are the best.
I'm not proclaiming anything to be the worst or best here and speaking as if it's an absolute.

Im not even sure why you're running to his defense. Are you really gonna sit there and defend such an overly dramatic statement that borders on rabid stupidity?

I mean have you bothered to look at the history of controllers? I mean just look at the OG Xbox controller, the Dreamcast controller, the OG Nintendo controller and tell me they are better designed for games then the 360 controller?

Its a completely stupid comment that just bleeds irrational fanboyism and irks me to no end. The depths of exaggeration some people will go to shun those they see as a threat to their favorite mega corporation baffles me. On all sides.

Damn, thread grows rapidly!

So, no Star and Select? Will touch-pad substitute them or they are just replaced (I see something between d-pad and touch-pad)?

Mic is cool too, maybe there will be no need for a headset (but all those freaks in multiplayer will use it... so, mute).

Anyway, looks alright, looks like DualShock controller. And I like it so far, especially since it isn't even final version.

Perhaps the entire back of the controller features the same touch mechanism as the Vita. Meaning that the front sensor could actually be a screen. Looks bulky enough to feature rear touch.

My first impreasion is that its pretty decent. Ot seems a bit more robust. Maybe easier to hold - that would address peoples ergonomic complaints, while keeping the same overall dualshock shape and feel. The sticks look funky, but seem to be made for easier use. The dpad looks fantastic.

Touchpad is there. Wonder what use it will have. Is that a light sensor for pseye? I wonder if speaker grill is only for audio out and not a microphone also. Cantreally imagine theyll habe something on a controller just to be a speaker. Cant wait to see it in action

This is incorrect. Most people's hands are symmetrical.

Good point. This explains why Keyboard/Mouse setups work so good for a lot of games.

This whole "symmetrical vs asymmetrical" argument makes no sense. The only reason I want the sticks moved is because it feels more natural to me. Yes, I have symmetrical hands, but I use them asymmetrically all day in almost everything I do.

It has more to do with just random comfort than it does with my hands being "the same".

Why would anyone put speaker in pad ? In Wii it was just there, gimmick.

Why would anyone put an accelerometer in a two-handed controller? (Hint: Sony wants to be feature complete.)

I'm guessing developers didn't utilize the speaker in the Wii Remote much because it was crap. And I don't think there's enough memory in the Wii Remote to temporarily store high enough quality audio. Hopefully Sony has learned from that. It is useful in in-home multiplayer games and it could add immersion.

I think it's going to be more about the pointer options it allows for. So don't think of it as a Move wand, but just a dual shock with the pointer ability at it's disposal.

One thing is for sure: If the PS4 ships with a PSEye(s) and such a controller it will be the most versatile console in terms of input ever released (like Vita for handheld gaming).
Gamepad, touch, motion, speaker, visual detection, voice(?) etc all directly out of the box.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Looks fine, but I DO NOT LIKE that there is no start and select buttons. Breaks my heart. : (
lol of course there will be a start and select button, either the design is not final or those buttons moved.

Vita-style dpad is all I care about. The controller itself looks OK, but lacks a "wow" factor. Doesn't matter much to me, many of my favorite controllers (Dreamcast, Gamecube, X360) look "blah" or just plain weird.

Could be something else on the back going by that tweet, but haven't read anything about it, unlike the tracking light touchpad which were both rumoured.

All while having a very familiar look and feel to the controller we've been using for almost 20 years.

If true, that's all kinds of awesome.

Not so much a gimimick in my opinion. One of my favorite examples of why I love this feature is Dead Space: Extraction. Disregard the game and it's on-rails laziness and everything else, but the way it utilized the game pad speaker was great. Playing the game in surround sound all atmospheric and whatnot and you stumble upon an audio log and it starts playing from the wii-mote. Way more immersive than simply coming from the TV. There's a lot of potential for this feature to really add to the overall experience if used correctly.

But of course if it was just a built in mic that would be great too. Ideally it would be both.

Nintendo needs to sue here, I take seriously the idea that a company should be encouraged to create their own ideas versus leeching off of other successful products. On this controller I see the heart and soul of the WiiU and Dreamcast. Positioned in the center where everyone can see it is everything wrong with the gaming industry today. End this Sony.

Damn it's raining meltdowns today

Only thing I can think of is if the devkit controller just doesn't have the split apart feature in it but ones that sony has in their internal labs does have it and will be part of the big reveal on the 20th.
