Unless those camera can be swivelled I don't see that as a good idea. A lot of people don't have their console in the prefect position to benefit. Perhaps they clip off?

knowing it is a prototype, one can hope, that the bulkier outline will make it into the final design. and pls dont make the LED(BAR) that big..

Just pointing at the camers which are mentioned in the Eyepad Patent thing.

Those are not the camera's mentioned on the patent, the patent discribes the cameras as placed on the controller itself, to detect hand motions above the touchpad area

propably the 2 black boxed next to the touchpad, currently mistankenly identified as a share button

The camera's on the devkit is the move camera system (rumors where that there are now 2 camera's in the move system for grater accuracy).

Its most likely the camera's wont be intigrated into the ps4 console design, but will be an attachment, like the camera that comes with the move.

Nah. It makes sense to put them there on a dev kit since they know everyone is going to be working at a desk. It's in perfect alignment for that environment. I put the odds at .01 percent of them doing that in a retail unit.

Doesn't Microsoft have their analog stick placement patented? I remember reading that on here a long time ago.

It would certainly help explain the terrible stick placement on the Wii U.

Edit: I wonder if the LED bar will really be used for Move-style controls, or if it's just a replacement for the Player 1-2-3-4 lights. Simply having a different colour per player would be neato.

New Digital Foundry Article confirms that the picture is genuine.

Our sources confirm that what you're actually looking at is a complete Orbis dev kit - our first look at what we believe is advanced development hardware. The Dual Shock 4 prototype itself is a significant leap beyond its predecessor, featuring a two-point touchpad interface and, in addition, a built-in loudspeaker and what we understand to be integrated PlayStation Move functionality.

I think that possible share button right there might be a camera?

by looking at onq123's post in the other thread regarding the Sony patent from Feb 5, 2013 (sorry, I keep mixing up the threads)

It's "select". The one on the right is "start".

There's no camera on the controller, AFAIK.

there is according to the patent, but it remains to be seen how far the patent applies to this prototype devkit controller. could be multiple designs in one (standard controller+eyepad). at the moment we think the patent is relevant because of the connection of the move light bar at the top of the controller.

Their commentary on the two black rectangles is noteworthy too. They reckon they're not the dual cameras:

The two black "bumpers" on each end of the casing are interesting - initially we thought they may be elements of the much-rumoured dual camera system, but the reality is probably more mundane - we reckon they form part of the WiFi and Bluetooth antenna assembly.

Also, I'm glad they recognise the touchpad potential for aiming:

There are two major headline features here. First up, there's the touchpad integrated into the face of the controller (there's no corresponding touch interface on the back). It's a two-point multi-touch interface similar to the rear pad on PlayStation Vita, and should allow for finer, more granular control than the less sensitive analogue sticks - think of the minute movements required for lining up a head-shot, for example.

Not sure why the touchpad has challenged some so much in thinking of game applications. I think it could be great if it mapped properly.

The article mentions that Sony might not be happy about the leak.

On the other hand, it might get more people tuning in to see what the controller really looks like, it's got them more inches on websites around the world.

Yeah I cant imagine they would be happy having the controller leak 5 days before the reveal.

You think so? Just wondering after reading this:

Complete speculation.

Realistically, what are sony going to do? Take the dev kits away? Fine the developers in some way?

At most if it's a big studio we see the guy who took the picture getting fired, but even that's not likely.

I can believe them not being happy, however it's got them on most large gaming sites as a headline item with 5 days to go until the event and on the last Friday before the event. That's drumming up interest and hype and excitement and it's only a late prototype.

I really doubt they are ok with a controller they wanted to debut to the world being leaked a few days before on the net.

They got dev kits and controllers all over the place in an age where everyone has a camera and twitter. They may not be jumping for joy but I'm sure stuff like this is expected.

If they can figure out who took the picture and leaked it he'll be fired for sure.

IF it's a big studio and he's not someone of any significant position. Nobody is going to fire their head programmer over this for example (Although hopefully someone of that stature wouldn't be stupid enough to do this.)

If it's a smaller indie studio? Nothing at all will happen.

Absolutely. This is what I thought of immediately when the rumor first hit. A sensitive touch pad would be a freaking godsend for FPS games.

Honestly, that whole controller looks like the perfect Steambox controller. Having a mouse seamlessly integrated like that should have either caused people at Valve to say: "Shit, Sony beat us to market with that... Or, shit why the fuck didn't we think to prototype that?" It's absolutely brilliant in design.

I just don't think the touch pad looks like it's in a good place for constant game use like an FPS. I mean I could cope having played them with a stylus on the Nintendo DS, but it's not ideal.

I feel like the touch pad will be great for displaying information but I'm having trouble coming up with actual uses for it.

Either way seems like the PS4 will be all about the controller.

that button on the far left above D pad you are all aware right that there is one on the right as well next to the buttons?

I think there just something for the devs and nothing to be taken into account.

I would hope Sony would not put their dual cameras in the dev kit. Seems like that would be a slight pain for testing purposes.

Not sure why the touchpad has challenged some so much in thinking of game applications. I think it could be great if it mapped properly.

I'm curious as to how someone is going to hold the controller so that they can aim and be doing other stuff at the same time. Seems like this would only help in a situation where aiming is all you are doing.

We all love leaks, but honestly, whoever took and distributed this picture is a real asshole. Corporate espionage and distribution of trade secrets is no laughing matter.

No higher-up at a company with access to a dev kit would leak this. It most certainly came from a low level employee trying to become e-famous on the web... That person will obviously be tracked down and fired and Sony would certainly have the ability to take legal action (though it would gain them nothing).

Anyone with access to a Dev kid would have obviously signed a Non-disclosure agreement. I suppose the source of the leak doesn't quite take his/her contract seriously.

The stylus sucked for that. And I don't know, maybe I just have large hands. When I place my hands on a controller, that touchpad is in the perfect spot for my right thumb.

Anyone concerned with possible battery life, especially if the Move sensor cannot be switched on/off.

The tiny LED bulbs in that don't use anything.

I am taking a guess and saying that the game will send a signal to the controller to turn it on when needed.

When I place my hands on a controller, that touchpad is in the perfect spot for my right thumb.

But could you still use bumpers with your right hand while doing that?

He sure is a dick... but I love those dicks.

Edit: wait

The leak is better for Sony because it definitely is getting more people excited and now there are no doubts about there being the PS4 reveal next week.

Sigh... relax man we have been having leaks for a while now, I am actually surprised it took this long.

I really can't see myself or many others taking their hands of the sticks and adjusting their aim with the touch pad.

I'm curious as to how someone is going to hold the controller so that they can aim and be doing other stuff at the same time. Seems like this would only help in a situation where aiming is all you are doing.

As far as I can see, if you hold a controller 'as normal', using the right stick for aiming, you have simultaneous access to L1 and L2 with your right hand.

If you use the touchpad instead, to use it comfortably, you would lose access to L2 and R2 but you gain access to the pad's click. Which would be enough for point and shoot.

Meanwhile your left hand can be doing all the same things with the left side of the controller that it always would (i.e. character strafing, forward, backwards etc.)

I remember when rumours about Vita's rear touch came out, I decided to try some FPS games on my laptop trackpad. I was much more competent than I am with an analog stick for aiming. Particularly for very subtle, fine-grained changes to aim. With a fixed trackpad size for games to work around I think it could be very interesting. (Of course, in Vita's case it turned out that it was very difficult to use the reartouch while keeping simultaneous access to a button, for firing or whatever. But PS4's pad doesn't have that problem).

So this new controller has a touchpad, motion control and a speaker on it? Surely the hardcore crowd can't be pleased with all these gimmicks on their controller. :p

I'd say the hardcore will be more than pleased seeing as how even if all those things are ignored it's still fully usable as a normal controller.

I guess I can do the same if I adjust my grip slightly, might be a problem for smaller handed people.
