Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I know that to run this emulator, Im gonna need a good CPU. Im currently trying to put together a ~$500 gaming PC build. Would an i3 be good enough for emulating Wii games? Could I go lower? Or do I need something better than an i3?

You don't NEED something better, but you'll want something better for most games.

If you're planning on running things in HD with constant frame rates, you'll probably need something a bit better, at least for some games.

Newer i3 models will probably do fine in most games with 2-3x res but you can do much better for similar prices, here some suggestions:

If intel:
i5-3470 ($200)
i3-3240 ($150)

If AMD:
AMD FX-8350 ($200)
AMD FX-6300 ($140)

The FX-6300 is probably the best CPU in its price range by general gaming performance but I'm not sure how AMD CPUs perform in Dolphin tbh.

Anyone got some good Sweet FX settings they can post?

I'm playing through prime right now and would love to see some.

So with a i5 at 3570k stock clock with a 560ti be able to run wii games at 60fps?

Dolphin is more CPU bound, so if you OC your 3570k, which you should be doing anyways, you will see much better results.

Am i missing something to do in settings when it comes to running Gamecube at 60fps?
I can run Brawl at 60fps on the wii side but trying just to do REmake its locking at 30

I figured as much. But wanted to be sure. Is this the case with most GC games?

It's the case with most games.

You can only really run them at their native frame rates, otherwise they just run faster than usual. For example, I can get a couple hundred FPS on Skyward Sword, but then it runs at like 4x speed because the game is designed around 30.

It can be beneficial though when a game is sort of ploddingly slow, just lock the frame rate slightly higher.

I play Skyward Sword at 40fps so that animation is slightly smoother, but also a little sped up.

Man, I love Metroid Prime. After all these years I still think it's my favorite game. I have never been so wowed before.

I've been really wanting to play it lately.

You should use some better AA instead of SMAA. Your system can certainly handle it. Crank the SSAA to 4x and see if you can hold a stable frame rate.

Ya I noticed the aliasing.

I bumped up the SMAA within SweetFX.

I also turned on the SSAA to x4 within Dolphin, I had it off before.

I actually couldn't access it. When I installed SweetFX, it kept saying that D3D9 had failed to load and I couldn't change the AA variable within Dolphin. A restart of my computer seemed to have fixed that error and now I can adjust that.

I'm still using this random 3.0-96-dirty version for Xenoblade which somebody linked months ago and it's absolutely flawless. Refreshing change from the other versions I was using where I would get random skips and crackles. Don't need to use LLE with this version either.

I enabled it and my sound crackles went away for the most part. I'm using a dedicated thread on my 3930k also.

Strange indeed. I haven't done anything special with the setup at all really, apart from the original settings people put out there for Xenoblade. I'm about 10 hours into it again and no skips or crackles yet thank god.

I'm on 4.2GHZ i5 (oc) and a GTX 670.

Just getting into Dolphin for the first time today now that I have a new PC. What I wanted to ask was I have a modded Wii, is there any way I can get my saved games off of my physical GameCube memory cards, and on to my PC? I have a playthrough of Tales of Symphonia I'm about 60% of the way through, and I would really rather not start over :)

If you copy them onto an SD card on the Wii then put that SD card into your PC, you can put the save files in the associated Dolphin Dir\User\Wii\title folder ... I think.

I did it with Xenoblade on Wii > Dolphin but it was a while ago!

Speaking of SD cards, is there any way to image an SD for use with Dolphin? Particularly software that isn't completely horrible or trialware/crapware.

Does anyone know the recommended audio settings for fixing the popping in Fire Emblem Path of Radiance?

Nevermind, had to set something to audio in another menu, works fine now.

Apologies if this has been answered, but I did a quick search and didn't see it, also didn't see it mentioned on the Dolphin wiki.

I just reinstalled Dolphin now that I have a bluetooth adapter that likes my Wiimotes (Asus adapter "hacked" w/ Toshiba drivers, takes a couple GUIs but it does work fine!). I've tested Kirby's Epic Yarn, Rhythm Heaven and Skyward Sword so far and other than some frame slowdowns, which could be due to me trying to push a bit too much out of my somewhat aging hardware (i7-930 @ 3.2Ghz, GTX 460 1GB), everything looks great. I'm doing the automatic gfx bump based on resolution--less lag so far using that vs. the 1x-4x auto.

My problem is--in Twilight Princess (Wii), I can get to the intro, I can hit A+B together...but once it comes up with the menu and pointer, my controls immediately go dead. After a few seconds, the game claims the Wiimote has lost its connection, and it just sits there until I kill the emulation.

I've tested IR pointing, waggle, and even WiiMotion+--all work fine in other games. I also swapped out my controller for a non-WM+ since TP didn't support it--no change.

Ripped the game from my disc via Homebrew on the Wii, as all of these games were ripped.

I'm stumped D: Will keep googling around for an answer.

Try ALT+F5 to refresh your Wiimote. Hope you don't have any disconnects after that.

I switched the sound to its own thread and am now running DSP LLE.

System:
SLI 560 TI OC'd
2500k OC'd 4.6

Settings:
D3D9
2.5x Native
16XAF
4x SSAA
Widescreen Hack
EFB: Ram
DSP LLE Audio

SweetFX:
SMAA
Luma
Gamma
Vibrance
Curves

EDIT:

I also showed these shots to my ignorant friend.

He responded that the difference would be unnoticeable when viewed on a TV from distance and, besides AA, he didn't notice much change from vanilla Metroid Prime.

Then I showed them these. Ignore the imgur, I didn't want to pollute my minus account.

You really, really, REALLY need to tone down that SweetFx. That looks overblown and terrible.

I guess if you like it, I can't tell you to get rid of it but I just think you'd enjoy it more with the SweetFx dialed back a bit.

Really? I don't think it was too bad.

I mostly just have it on there for Vibrance, and I kept the settings fairly conservative. Prime already has really great colors, this just allows it to pop. Think I should bump it down a bit? Usually I see people with ridiculous SweetFX setups with crazy colors and why can't I hold all this sharpening?

I used to have HDR and Bloom on, but they were a little performance intensive for the game when running the thermal visor. hardware wouldn't increase, my GPU runs at like 30% and CPU at 50%, but the FPS would drop down to 30. I just have SMAA, Luma, Gamma, and Vibrance.

Here are the comparison shots. Imgur since I don't want to mess with my minus account.

I'm sorry, that was in response to the Twilight Princess shot, not yours.

How do you apply the textures?

Edit - I tried putting the hi-res texture folder in the texture folder in Dolphin, but it's not loading. Not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Enable custom texture loading in the graphics settings. It should be an option in the last tab.

I converted the Insane Slug files to the GC version and put them in the folder indicated in the "Advanced" Graphics Tab "Load Custom Textures." Is there something I'm missing?

Edit - It looks like part of the textures (brick wall) are loading, but not all of them.

Any chance someone might be able to help me with the hi-res textures for TP? I've gone thru the video at the bottom of this link and can't seem to figure out why it's not working. The only textures that seem to be partially loading are the bridge in the opening cinematic as posted above.

What's your Metroid framerate with those settings and PC specs?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC soon to have an i5 processor (already have a 660ti). On my current old AMD 3.6ghz OC processor it runs pretty poorly even without AA or Sweetfx.

I get 60 fps everywhere.

The only time I get frame drops are:

Activating the heat visor
Get attacked by the air pirates
Jump in water
Random areas

Can I used my wired 360 controller to play Xenoblade? I configured it for the Gamecube pad but not sure what the settings should be for the Wiimote.

Yep, attach the wii pro controller in settings and configure that.

There are even some 360 controller buttons for xenoblade the replace the Wii button prompts.

Not actually that important
Does Twin Snake still give problems with the fmv?
Is it possible to play Zelda TP Wii with a 360 pad instead of motion controls or at least play the GCN version (are the texture/sound worse?) with a widescreen hack which makes it exactly the same (and not only similar) to how the screen is framed on Wii's anamorphic widescreen?)

I don't actually know, but from the wiki:

The Wii version is identical to the GameCube version, but is mirrored by design; ie. what is left on the world map in the GC version is right on the Wii. It also uses the Wii remote and supports widescreen.

Seems like for a controller you are better off with the Gamecube version, but you can usually simulate the movements of a wiimote on a controller as well.

Here is a video of Gamecube GC in 1080p, looks pretty good.

Man, I really need to play this game again.
Can't remember this part at all :(

I still remember it like it was yesterday (haven't played the game for like 8 years). It's a room in Tallon Overworld, IIRC it has a save room connecting to it (or pretty close) and also when jumping between those platforms I would always hit those stupid mushrooms and get poisoned (oh god the noise). Best game of all time, no contest.

Oh my god.

This is the first I've seen of this SweetFX in Dolphin. Big FPS hit?

Its not too bad, I think I'm going to try to turn my resolution down to 2x to see if it fixes some of my slow downs.

I'm usually at 60, but for a few occasions

Activating the heat visor
Get attacked by the air pirates
Jump in water
Random areas

EDIT: Ya 2x Native seems to have fixed some of my random slowdowns. Heat visor sticking at about 45-55 fps now which is acceptable.

I'll have some more screenshots posted before I leave for class.

Very close, its actually in Chozo Ruins, but other than that you are spot on.

This is the first time I've ever played the game and its amazing. The atmosphere, gameplay, music, art style are all perfect and I'm addicted.

The Vibrance setting in SweetFX seems to accentuate the colors well and brings out some great visuals.

Does xenoblade and monster hunter work well with a 360 controller?

Yep. I've played the first couple hours of both and they both play perfectly with a 360 controller.
