Because Light's a boring, mean-spirited, one-note asshole of a character who in real life most people would simply brand as a douchebag and walk away from. Her "hardened soldier" act just makes her come off as a bully.

I ended up liking her after she dropped some of her anger and got over her punch-at-will approach to Snow. At least the script let Fang call her out on it later.

Yeah I thought so. I'm surprised Square Enix still let him do a THIRD game in that regard. Maybe they thought the obsession with Lightning would push more sales than moving the team to work on a game that has actual ambition.
Wonder if giving squall tits would have turned FFVIII into a trilogy too. That is about the only difference between the main characters.

I hate Square's sick obsession with her not the character. I like Terra from FF VI but if Square revolved the next games on Terra and her universe instead of making VII, I would've also felt the same way.
She was a very, quiet, boring, bitchy character. I thought so from the beginning. But she also has a cast of annoying characters around here. She just is the worst main character for the first half of the game. I never finished it to see if she got less bitchy. 13-2 has worse main characters in Noel and Sarah, but the game play is better.
FF8 had Laguna, though, and Laguna was the real reason people played FF8.

From what I played of FFXIII, she had that "Me against the world personality" which I fucking loathe.
Which is disappointing since I had high hopes she would make a great character.
It's been awhile since I've played(holy shit, almost 3 years in fact).
I've been thinking of picking it back up again because I do love the world and would like to play more of it.

I agree. Very well said. Maybe if she was all fucked up, missing an eye and had scars all over her face and body, you could look at her and say "Wow, this character has had a hard life. I can't relate but I can sympathize". But as it is, she looks a day out of high school and is acting like a total ass.

PS: I think Lightning is a pretty good character overall who gets a worse rep than she deserves because of the general backlash to how people feel about the FF13 games. It happens all the time, really - the 'Celda' debacle colouring early impression of Wind Waker, which then mellowed, for instance, or Mass Effect 3 (which generally speaking is tighter than 2, even if you dislike the streamlining of the RPG elements) getting marked as being shit all over thanks to the disastrous ending and so on. There are many people who dislike Lightning, like those other things, but their voice is made infinitely louder thanks to the general unrest about FF13 and the direction the series has taken this generation. Lightning will, I think, be remembered more fondly once she's dead and gone and FF has moved on.

Type-0 is the best FFXIII, has the best L'Cie, and also the best Lightning.

To the OP, I actually agree, I like Lightning alright. Not one of my favorite characters, by any means, but I don't think she is outright bad. The reason the game doesn't interest me is that it seems to me to be the third installment of a game that shat all over my child hood, a game that dissapointed me more than anything else in my admittedly short life has.

I personally don't think people hate lightning (I remember fans getting excited when she was in the last dissida), but more what she represents (great graphics versus even greater gameplay)

Also I'm secretly hoping for a 3DS enhanced version that will be announced this E3!.
Lightning in XIII-2 is an absolute joke. And this comes from someone that actually likes the character in XIII. I don't think how someone can defend how anodyne she is in that game. She's like a fortune cookie machine who sometimes says "Sorry Serah".
Also I agree about punching Snow. What a joke character...
