Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

It's actually NA Dragon Force, NA Christmas Nights, and NA Virtua Fighter 2.
Is that a JP modded Saturn or something? I don't remember Sega ever releasing a White Saturn in the U.S. VF2 should be fairly cheap shouldn't it? It was fairly popular and it was given away at some point with the system (3 game pack-in). I'm not sure how much CN is, but you should also have the regular nights + analog controller if you want to play it.

Wow, the price of Dragon Force has gone up quite a bit! I still have my copy NA copy sitting in my room at my parent's house back in the U.S. I would've brought it with me, but I already have the JP version here. (original and satakore version)

Wow, how is it that I've never heard of this game in all my years of being a Saturn fan. I need this game...but it's so expensive! I still want it...

Yesterday I saw Radiant Silver Gun on ebay for 85 and 65 pounds almost finished acutions. I thought it was much more expensive, it's less than 100€.

I'm afraid to buy this now. I just bought Thunder Force V (albeit at a much lower price) and I absolutely hate it compared to almost all other shmups on the Saturn. Something just feels off about the game.

You....absolutely....hate Thunder Force V?

Do you hate babies for breakfast or what? Such a mean feeling towards a fantastic game :/

I can't really put my finger on it. It's almost as though it's very unresponsive feeling. The slow-down is kind of off-putting too.

Edit: Hate babies for breakfast?

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Everyone here loves eating babies for breakfast, you weird non-cannibal.

I quite like Thunder Force V, myself. Such a good soundtrack.

Interesting. Last night I went to Seik's place and played Thunder Force V on the Saturn for a good 2 hours trying to beat my record. When I got home, I wanted to play more of it but I was so tired and consequently lazy that I couldn't even hook up my Saturn. So I've looked at my PS1 collection and played my PS1 copy instead as the PS1 is permanently connected. I couldn't believe how unresponsive this version was compared to the Saturn. I don't know if it's the controller or if they really screwed up the movements but I had to restart the game 3 times because I couldn't 1L Human Road. I was so furious that I rose up my chair and plugged back my Saturn on the CRT and started playing the Sat version again. 1cced up to last level. Felt like a God again, thanks to the free range weapon. There was no mistake. I had precise movement over the floaty one from the PS1. As for the slowdown, they are there yes but there's so few of them and they happen with such specific requirements (massive explosions) that they do not bother me at all.

Sucks that you do not find the controls responsive. I find them quite the contrary. Like Teknoman just below suggested, did you try turning up the speed of your ship?

Which game is better - Battle Garegga or Hyper Duel?

Probably pick them both up while I'm in Japan, but I don't know much about either. Assumed due to price and name Hyper Duel was a kusoge but the comments here are fairly positive.

Both games are great. However I vastly prefer Hyper Duel for many reasons. For one, I love the morphing ability in Hyper Duel. It's quite unique and you end up switching form quite often depending of the situation. Another thing I love is that there is no level transition. The game is 8 consecutive stages without any interruption. The soundtrack is very Technosoft-ish. Very catchy and upbeat. The gameplay and difficulty curve is pretty much what you should expect from Technosoft. To be honest I'm quite the Technosoft fan and slightly biased towards horizontal shmups so take it with a grain of salt.

Battle Garegga has this ranking system that grinds my gear a bit too much. The longer you stay alive and the stronger you get, the harder the game gets. Obviously each stage gets progressively harder, but the game adds that extra difficulty layer by punishing you for breathing. Other games have a similar ranking system, like Soukyugurentai, but it's nowhere near as extreme as Battle Garegga. I'm not exactly an expert with shmups. I'm pretty average so I won't pretend that I die only because of this mechanic. But every time I feel like I'm doing good, the difficulty steps up to insurmountable level and I die from a cheap death. Other than that, the gameplay is great with a good selection of ships and beautifully animated sprites and pyrotechnics. I'd definitely recommend it too, although be prepared to change the way you are playing shmups.

Anyone have DeliSoba Deluxe? :)

Hyper Duel is an awesome game with an even better soundtrack. Honestly I havent seen one bad game made by Technosoft.

The crappy early-3D graphics really rub me raw after the gorgeous pixel art in the other games.

Thats passable for me since I have a kinda soft spot for early 3D graphics (well those that have actual effort put into them). Also you cant really beat that Guardian Knight or the duel against an autopilot Rynex. Havent seen anything that awesome in a shoot em up in awhile.

DasDamen: Meh, at least you're honest about it. Some just hate something with a passion, and then get all defensive about it. You, on the other hand, at least admit it just rubbed you the wrong way in a manner you can't fully describe instead of just spewing unabashed negativity.

papersleeves: I too hate the ratcheting difficulty of Battle Garegga, in fact the concept in general. BG just takes it to an all-time extreme. Tie into that, the enemy bullets that blend into the background. Thankfully, the Saturn version has a red bullets option.

That Dragon Force LP is quite entertaining to read. So it's kinda like Dice Wars, where you try to take over as much land mass as you can? Only, y'know, you actually control the fights that determine who gets control, instead of it being down to the luck of a dice roll.

I can't quite figure out the hierarchy of troop types. From where I am right now (shortly after beating the black dragon) it seems it's Dragons > Harpies > Most Classes > Mages > Archers?

Yesterday I saw Radiant Silver Gun on ebay for 85 and 65 pounds almost finished acutions. I thought it was much more expensive, it's less than 100€.
I've not been keeping track on it but it cost me 150 quid several years ago.
I just won a copy at auction for $113.50 with spine card. Never buy expensive games at listed buy-it-now prices.
Maybe the XBLA rerelease drove prices down?

I was kinda hoping that'd happen.

That's exactly what happened. Prior to that, RSG was regularly selling on Ebay for $250 and above. It never was an incredibly rare game, but its reputation as well as its lack of localization in the west and its late release made it a very desirable item.

Whats the best way to fix/buff scratches on CDs from around this era anyway? Not having any problems with Saturn games yet, but figured this might be the best place to ask instead of making another thread.

Snagged Legend of Heroes (english version) for Turbo Duo off ebay a week or so ago for 20 bucks. Its got some scratches, and at certain points, either the music will cut out/voice will cut out/ or will take awhile to load a scene.

Professional resurfacing machine. Ask your local movie rental store.

Aw man, I want that Hyperduel. I saw it for the first time yesterday. D:

Either you purchase it soon at a high price, or you wait and purchase it later at a ridiculously high price :D

In all seriousness, clear your condominium stuff first and foremost ;)

Dragons > EVERYTHING but Samurai, equal to Dragons
Harpies > Just about everything but Archers and Mages, can usually hold their own against Dragons
Cavalry > Soldiers
Samurai > Dragons
Soldiers = suck
Archers = suck
Mages > Harpies, a lot of melee classes if you use them wisely, but never ever use them against Dragons.
Beasts > Cavalry, very well balanced for the most part

Yeah im going to have to find some place to resurface it...tried that Gamestop disc skip fixer, and that made it work a little better...but same problems. Toothpaste trick didnt work either. Seriously hope I can fix it since its not exactly easy to find, especially not for 20 bucks.

EDIT: Also still no luck on my end with Saturn S-video cables.

On the bright side, just checked my wallet and found 3Dgames business card...a local retro game place that also offers disc repairs! I'd think they would know what they were doing since they deal in retro games...or at least know the value of them.

Saw a copy of Street Fighter Zero 3 for $80 today while looking for some SNES stuff. Unfortunately, they were only selling it bundled with the lone Saturn they had for sale. Oh well.

You can buy your own resurfacing/buffing machine as well. They are not as good of course since much much cheaper. But they have worked for me in the past. I think I bought a simple one for $25 or so. Was the size of a 90's CD Player.

Should've bought it anyway; IIRC Zero 3 alone fetches that much.

I saw a couple for around 4500 yen here and looked in really good shape according to the tag. Game only, no RAM cart, if thats the difference. Not going to say where since I may go grab one today haha

Picked up the following today:

Battle Garegga
Street Fighter 3 Zero
Soukyuugurentai
Warriors of Fate 2
The Yakuken Special

Eyed a few others for next time, including a few sealed Famicom games (Zelda 1???)

I recently got Resident Evil and Shin Megam Tensei: Devil Summoner in the mail on Friday. I also have a few more on the way, such as Mega Man X4.

The Saturn surely is becoming my favorite Sega systems so far.

Also have disc-only copies of Die Hard Arcade and Sega Rally Championship.

It's funny, I think I play the Japanese games more than I do the US ones. Wider selection of fighters and shmups, I suppose. But the domestic stuff is pretty good, too.

Whats the usual price for Resident Evil 1? Honestly dont care if its complete since I can just make my own case (although it would be nice). I want to make the Saturn version my first playthrough of the original.

After unwrapping my new games and realizing that the spine cards don't magically stay on by themselves, are there any cases (either hard, or just a soft sleeve) that are CD-sized that you guys use to store your games, so you can keep the spine cards on the side?

Well, it cheats and then the women are...woof.

No joke, had some friends over years ago and immediately after telling them the game was impossible, one of won twice in a row. Hilarious.

$35-40 seems to be the the average price for complete copies. I want to get a copy one of these days, too. (Especially since it uses the original soundtrack instead of the awful arrange soundtrack for the Dual Shock PS1 re-release.)

eBay seems to be $30 to $40+. But I bought mine off of Amazon for $17. This is one of those instance where I recommend looking at Amazon instead. Only downside is no pictures.

Fake edit: nevermind, guess I grabbed the last decent priced CIB on their. They are all $30+ for CIB.

I've never seen anything (besides tape or glue) that will let you keep the spine card on the side. I just usually keep them inside the case with the game, like this:

Actually, glue is what the previous owner of my Mortal Kombat (Mega CD) game did with the spine card to keep it on. It didn't work out so well as the edge part is completely gone and the rest is pretty beat up as well...

If you want to see a "winner" of the game you can check out the gameplay video at Segagaga Domain. Look for "The Yakyuken Special" (The video is NSFW)

woodypop that is a very respectable collection man, i dont think id add too many to that pile myself...damn.

I was thinking about the remnants of my Saturn collection the other day.

It seems my SE copy of Advanced Variable Geo has disappeared into the ether.
Kinda miffed about that, considered I never got around to completing the jigsaw puzzle that came with it.
