Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

BocoDragon

or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
Slightly off-topic, but every time I'm reminded that Ogre Battle is a thing, all I can think of is the Queen song.

Wasn't aware there was a Saturn title in the series... Never made it West, I take it.

You know that's actually intentional? All the Ogre Battle games have subtitles based on Queen songs.

The creator is a Queen fan. In Crimson Shroud, his latest game, there's a chapter called "The lap of the gods".

EDIT: Too late (my time has come - send shivers down my spine - body's aching all the time)

This ain't no deal, but damn, I wanted this one so badly, I don't give a shit! :D

Sorry for the double post, but holy shit man, feels good!

Every time I see that game recently, I get Dragon's Dogma vibes from the cover art.

Thanks, fellas!

woodypop that is a very respectable collection man, i dont think id add too many to that pile myself...damn.
I'd still like to get complete NTSC copies of Die Hard Arcade, Virtua Cop, Sega Rally Championship, and Shining Force III. Gotta have something to look for at retro conventions. =)

Congrats, Seik! Lots of loading pauses, and only 2-player, but still a great pair of games. Enjoy!

Good stuff, Seik! I have always wondered how difficult D&D is to play with little to no Japanese language knowledge.
Isn't it in English?
No, it's in Japanese. But it's an action hack 'n slash, so it's not too hard to manage. Plus, I'm sure there's gotta be a translation, or at least the English arcade story on the web somewhere.

I posted my Genesis and Neo stuff in the other thread. Here's my Saturn stuff followed by a pic of my Dreamcast collection too since there's no thread for that. Bsd iPhone pictures follow...

I think it's 59 unique full games and some extras like Christmas Nights, the Panzer Dragoon Demo and a second Virtua Fighter Remix.

I have about eight more that are doubles that are not shown. Nothing earth shattering in there, though. I have a second Nights (in a long box) Mechwarrior 2, Gungriffon, and some others. I've been debating selling all of them or holding onto the boxes in case I break some of those fragile cases over time.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Two of my favorite games of all time are Mystaria and Guardian Heroes.

I bought Mystaria recently and don't know how much I'm into it... the translation is really weird, seems like evrythng is hvly abbrvtd. Game also seems to be pretty sluggish and the 3d polygonal graphics do it no favors. That said, I think MicroCabin's games have a lot of "heart" and I miss the company, so I will have to play more. It's also one of the few RPGs that got a domestic release for the platform.

So, any love for import RPGs in here? I know the language barrier hinders a lot of people but I have amassed a pretty sizable library of RPGs for the system, that I dick around with and occasionally try to brute-force my way through with only 2 years of college Japanese under my belt.

My list:
Tengai Makyo: The Apocalypse IV (my favorite RPG on the platform!)
Sakura Taisen
Sakura Taisen 2
Samurai Spirits RPG
Terra Phantastica
Lunar: Magical School
Langrisser 3
Langrisser 4
Langrisser 5: The End of Legend
Princess Quest
Princess Crown
Blue Seed (RPG with card-based battle system and a modern-day anime aesthetic)
Linkle Liver Story (a cool action RPG by Gau/Nextech of Crusader of Centy/Ranger-X fame.. stars a lot of furries, has colorful graphics and great music, I made it pretty far into this and was originally planning on doing a walkthrough but got stuck :p )

When "next gen" started back in '95, I was originally planning on getting a Saturn because of all those awesome-looking RPGs lining the page of Gamefan. Lunar remakes (I envied my friend and his SEGA-CD), Blue Seed, Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining Wisdom... of course then FF7 hit and the rest was history :p I did get my Saturn and a lot of import RPGs off ebay in the college days though... prices were (are still?) very reasonable. Especially compared to the US RPGs :p

I loved the saturn when it came out, we never imported anything, but we had most of the noteworthy american released, including panzeer dragoon saga, and dragon force. Thanks to this thread I set up the emulator, and I am currently playing through my disk of dragon force. It is just as good as I remember!

When I am done with this, I think Dark Savior is next.

I swear, once the Wii U is paid off (should be mid-March) and I start getting some extra funds, I'm saving up for Dragon Force. My interest is genuinely piqued.

That or Earthbound, but right now I think Dragon Force is easier to accomplish.

Any love for the Working Designs release of Magic Knight Rayearth? I absolutely adored that game back in the day. I am a bit scared to return in case it doesn't hold up to my memory.

I remember loving everything about this game except the forced stealth segment in this one sky town. Hated that one.

Can someone here tell me what brand CD-R's are most suitable to burn back-up games? Thanks!
Assuming nothing has changed in the past 5-10 years:

- Get discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. This usually isn't denoted on the packaging itself, but I believe it's a safe bet to go with discs that are blue on the underside (instead of clear) and have "made in Japan" printed somewhere on the label.

- Test your CD burner by burning a few discs, each at different write speeds, and then run a diagnostic tool to check each disc for errors afterward. See which burn speeds yield the fewest errors and stick to that speed for future burns.

When my first Dreamcast was dying, it became real picky over what discs it would read. Following these guidelines tended to produce the best results.

wait, those things happen? man my city sucks sometimes!
Yeah, Portland Retro Gaming Expo is my favorite! I also try to make it to the one in Seattle. Those two, PAX Prime, Emerald City Comicon, and the Northwest Pinball & Arcade Show are on my yearly circuit of cons/shows. Seattle's a great place to be. But I'm sure you've got us beat for weather! ;)

Hang-On! I never knew that was on Saturn. Any good? Does it have split-screen multiplayer? Horizontal, or vertical? I wonder if it's worse/better than Manx TT.

I absolutely love Hang On GP on the Saturn. I have played Manx TT too and enjoyed that, but there is something about the feel of Hang On GP that just really clicks with me. I played that thing for hours.

It's short on content, but long on enjoyable riding. The behind the handlebars view was incredible for the time.

It is single player only.

I thought you guys might enjoy this.

Yeah yeah, so I lost a life on the first boss. I died while trying to snap a shot that ended up a blurry mess.

My friend was very generous and gave me his Sony A/V camcorder cable so I didn't have to buy one.

Nice, ExitPlanetDust! I love the PSOne/LCD Screen combo.

Your pix remind me of the time I output Saturn X-Men Vs. Street Fighter thru the Game Gear screen, via its TV tuner input. lol

Finally got around to doing the 50/60hz mod on my Saturn.
I'm new to soldering and picked up a cheap soldering set in Maplin. Very easy to do (lifting the leg on pin 79).
I'm gonna attempt the region mod on my next day off... But in the meantime I can play PAL games at the proper speed and with sexier scan lines!

I have a friend willing to sell it to me for $80 along with 4 other import games (don't know the names yet but will post when I learn them)... Might bite. If only I could find a dang S-Video cable! I want to give my Framemeister a workout!
Since this post, SCART cable incoming! Woo! Also, here are the games (had some stuff wrong in my post from last week, corrected below):

Fire Pro Wrestling S - 6 Men Scramble
DJ Wars
Cube Battler: Story of Shou
and SOTN

For $70. What say you, Saturn GAF? Games are in good condition.

Oh man, I had forgotten all about Bleemcast! It was very impressive. How many stand alone discs were released? Three?

Fake Edit: Yeah, looks like three. Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, and Metal Gear Solid.

Symphony of the Night alone make it worth it.

Even as a die-hard Saturn fan I can't understand the fascination with the Saturn version of SOTN. Is the extra content really enough to validate playing a version with load times before the map screen and all-Japanese menus?

As a huge shoot'em up fan I had a lot of time for the Saturn, saw the Hyper Duel pics and thought I'd add my own to the collection here.

Would be kinda cool to wander into a random pawn shop / half price books and find it. I saw Rune Jade (Japanese only release, online DC rpg) in one a couple weeks back, so anything can happen...right?

I just got this copy of Magic Knight Rayearth a couple of days ago, really enjoying it so far. I think for my next purchase I will check out Kingdom Grandprix, hopefully it is as fun as I remember it being in the arcade.

It truly can. I've seen all sorts of obscure game stuff in pawn shops. Ran across a JVC X'Eye one time. $100. I was kind of kicking myself after I didn't buy it that day and went back and it was gone.
