Sony to Eurogamer: PlayStation 4 will not block used games

Good deal, but I don't think it's gonna be as black and white as people think. I think if you buy a used game from gamestop you'll have to pay a fee to activate it on your machine like an online pass currently does. You'll still be able to play it, but it won't completely block you like the 720 is rumored to be doing.

Fitting that this .gif is from when they gave everyone free 360s.

"Yeah, we block used games and the Kinect has to be plugged in to use your console and it has online DRM... but here's a free system!"

*press writes rave reviews of Durango*

This means Durango won't block used games either. It would be stupid for publishers to be ok with used games for one platform but not for the other.

Yep. Also, I would think such a restriction would be publisher/developer-specific, like region-locks, and not a console-wide requirement because it doesn't make sense to force it, anyway.

So if PS4 allows used games

And Durango blocks used games

Isn't that a disincentive for devs to make PS4 games?

It would also be a huge disincentive for anyone to buy the Durango itself. Guess what happened next would depend on whether developers prefer a console where their games can't be purchased use or a console that has a significantly bigger userbase.

They should've made a point about it in the conference but I guess they would be giving too much credence to rumors.

I think that missing out on sales by not having a game present on a platform is a bigger disincentive.

But if your Battlefields and CoDs and Maddens and other tentpole titles aren't on PS4, then who is going to buy a PS4?

I'm just wondering if this has anything to do with EA not being there tonight.

This is really good news.

I figure at this point, Microsoft either hasn't implemented it at all, or would be scrapping it now that they know about it.

Sony really should've kept their hand close to their chest until they saw if Microsoft confirmed or denied it though.

This is the most important piece of information revealed today. More important than the actual conference.

Crisis averted.

Microsoft desperately trying to pull their used game lockout as we speak ;)

On the basis that Edge was right about the PS4 RAM, you have to ask if they are right about their MS stuff too.

Well, that's good news at any rate. I bought Nier used and look at me now!

(I still haven't played it yet, sorry)

But yeah, I can't afford buying new games all the time and I go the used route quite a bit. This would have dulled any anticipation I had for the PS4, especially if I couldn't find a new copy of a certain game anywhere, and if the asking price was too high, in cases where the game became highly sought after.

I wanted to make a thread asking about this. That is one question answered.

Now how about the hilarious shittaku playstation paywall 'rumor'?
Or did EG also not bother dignifying them? :D

Activision was a part of the demonstration, and EA was on the confirmed list of publishers and developers.

good.

Microsoft gonna have to pull off a miracle if they want to push that now, there doesn't seem to be any 3rd party favorism going on either judging by the conference. though maybe that's why EA wasn't there, lol.
