Pachter was right about PS4 graphics

For once, I'd have to agree with the guy.

The visuals, while definitely pretty, did not feel like a substantial leap over PS3.

Am I the only one that feels like we're truly getting diminishing returns?

I'm sure many people were thinking the graphical leap was not going to be significant...

I believe that the last big transition was from the last generation to the current one (PS2 to PS3). From now on, technical advancements will be focused around things that are not as explicit as better graphics. I did think a lot of what they showed looked amazing, however.

Considering KZ looks considerably better than anything on any console, and it's a launch game, I would say your expectations were too high.

We're deep in the land of Uncanny Valley. Not much to do but wait out these dark ages to come with everyone obsessed with realism.

lol, i'm more than impressed.

Looks leagues better than anything on the PS3.

I'm not disappointed in the slightest. And what we saw were just launch titles running via streams. 2-3 years from now will blow our minds.

I don't know that anyone was expecting that. This isn't 2D to 3D. Or the introduction of HD. These are just more powerful HD systems--not to undermine how good these games look. I do find them pretty incredible looking.

It seems that very very few people knew about the 8Gb of ram, so those demos were possibly running on the idea of 4, so less once the OS overhead had been allowed for.

And I thought it ll looked rather good. Except Watch Dogs which was really let down with the tearing.

I wonder if they'll put these trailers on the Store to download to the PS3 to watch in better quality.

Indeed. Killzone's cityscape and all of Deep Down looked amazing. And these are the very first next-gen games we are seeing.

Not sure what people were expecting...

killzone looks better then crysis 2. much much better, if it was real time, its the best thing i've even seen

I still think Sony is real gun shy after the PS3 fiasco so they're not doing target renders or what the system could do or the other aspects. So you get more games on unfinished hardware being shown in earlier stages.

Launch titles for the next gen always look similar to the previous gen. What you see now is not what you'll be getting at the end of this gen. This goes for all three consoles.

al always comparing lauch titles with last generation titles from PS3 wont be right.

We need to wait for 2014-2015 titles...

How the fuck do people look at Dragon Dogma 2 demo and KZ4 and not say its not a big enough leap.

You fucking people are blind, get some glasses.

we're gonna see that GIF everywhere aren't we?

But I disagree. Lets Compare GOW2 to Resistance, Then Compare it to GOW:A.

Yeah gotta say these graphics are't that gr---just kidding they're fucking amazing.

You can't get that fidelity on current gen.

If you honestly think the current gen is anything like that, then you're completely delusional.

If anything, that Killzone trailer showed some next gen visuals for sure.

Launch titles and target renders, for all we know they weren't even developed on PS4 devkits but instead were developed on PC hardware. It's way too early to make any judgments.

Not to mention the first waves of PS3 and 360 titles didn't look that much better than the top echelon of PS2/Xbox games, either.

It's impressive. You will see it when you play in your TV. It will be in the details, shaders, shadows, hopefully FPS. This is where the upgrade lies. It will not be THAT apparent on launch games showed through quick trailers.

Watch dog looks like its on different planet compared to any ps3 game. killzone is close to year away from launch and still looks better than any ps3 game.

What are people smoking here and comparing to ps3 games?

Interesting thread. What does a substantial leap over PS3 look like?

They are pretty and definitely a step above PS3. But yeah, it's no... HUGE leap. I don't know if it's just me, but even early PS360 games felt more impressive for their time. Again, it's not like my PS3 can pull off these graphics, but still.

the real games are going to come a year or so after the console launches. no one is going to bring their big games out on launch, it's a terrible business strategy. just like with Wii U, and just like what's going to happen with the Durango.

I think the bigger problem is that the platform is powerful enough that there's nowhere to hide the creative bankruptcy rotting the industry. It's on full display, with extensive details and excellent smoke and shading. The games shown were a lot of stuff we've essentially seen before, played before, watched before, and none of it was exciting in the way something that grabs your imagination should be.

I'm still bullish on PS4 as a platform, but I want to see some great games that capture my imagination.

He said the leap would not be that discernible. We are looking at an pre-alpha build of a next gen title based upon older code that may even be based on older specs. It has 9 months to go and the console has another 6 years at least for it to be worked upon, much like it has been the case with 360/PS3.

So, no, he is incorrect.

que?
1. Launch Titles
2. Nobody has seen any of these games, in person, on a 1080p monitor right in front of their face. This isn't an excuse, not viewing something with the proper resolution takes a lot away from graphical details.

Nobody has any idea what this new system is going to be fully capable of and only a fool would open their mouth to make suggestions on what is possible or a reality before working with the hardware itself. Nobody even knows what the god damn box is going to look like!

In summary, Patcher could be right. Or, he opened his mouth about something months in advance with zero evidence to support his claim. Now, based upon his history...

The fact that there's even some agreement with the OP here proves (I think) there's at least some merit to this argument.

No one in their right mind would argue there wasn't a significant visual leap between PS1 and PS2, even early trailers of launch games.

Yes, there is some diminishing returns going on. In previous generations you had such leaps in polygonal complexity which isn't as readily apparent in the next wave of machines. I mean, like during the PS1 days, a random cat in some game would be just a few boxes slapped together. On the PS2 you would have something actually resembling a feline. With the PS3 you are pretty much creating a realistic animal. With the PS4 you will not see a dramatic increase in detail per model, as returns on single models is diminishing, but instead getting a far larger number of detailed models, better IQ and lighting etc.

I know the Killzone gif is very impressive, but ask yourselves, how much better at the individual models? Not substantially so. But boy that lighting sure was pretty.

It's looks about as big a jump as last gens.

KZ looks up there with most everything I've seen on PC. Some moments approached CG. And it's only launch.
