PlayStation 4: Web reaction to Sony's 'invisible' console

I'm not exactly sure what people are expecting from new consoles.
Better graphics and better services is what I'm expecting.
Better games can be done on any hardware.

Have these folks ever heard of E3? Sony gotta save some stuff to show off...
why? You have a conference with hours of everyone's focused attention, versus E3 where everything hits at once and you have to compete with every other game on the planet. All eyes were on Sony and they blew it.

Not showing the console was a terrible move. Even if it was a rough, beta shell, it would have been better. By not showing it, it instills a feeling of it not being ready for market, or that there was some flaw about it they didn't want to show (maybe a lack of a disc slot?)

It was just... odd. You can't really deny it wasn't out of the ordinary or weird to not show your console at your console's unveiling

These people were expecting hard price and street date? Wow!

Apple has spoiled the media!
Changed, not spoiled. Apple has managed to shift the idea of what's expected at a hardware reveal.

Everyone SHOULD be talking about Remote-Assistance on PS4.
The ability to take-over and help somebody to beat a level or finish a puzzle is UNMATCHED.
I want people to talk more about this feature, make a huge deal about it!

So Microsoft can ape it.

It's too big a video for me to really summarize it, so I'm gonna put their trolling aside and just give you a piece of their grasp for this kind of stuff.

They say Agnis was shown last year on a Ps3, and now on a PS4. So they were sad that it looked the same lol

If they really said that, then they are greater tools that I could have imagined.

Reading the mainstream press and ‘the general publics’ opinions on the reveal is actually really painful to do!

I mean everyone has an opinion and even though I might disagree with people over something if they have a well thought out argument I will respect it but some of the pure shit that people are spouting baffles me beyond belief!

Sony spent over 2 hours going over exactly what the console will do, how it will do it, why its beneficial to us as consumers, showed some games, showed the controller, showed you could stream your PS4 games anywhere via Vita, said when it would roughly come out etc but apparently none of that matters because they didn’t show how the actual console will look like!

So damn what if they didn’t show you, even if the actual console was an actual replica of a lump of poo as long as it did all the things they stated I would buy it no problem!

It seems some simpletons go on like they care about specs or what actual abilities a device has yet what they are really basing their opinion on is the cosmetics!

And as for the lack of price, don’t people know how business works? In the gaming industry, these days you basically have 3 companies all fighting each other for market share and as such you have to make every move count, anticipate their moves and hold back information until the right time. It just seems that many cant grasp this concept and just treat it like a mobile phone reveal, which is completely different since the market works a lot differently.

Why would Sony come straight out with a price when the console wont be out for at least another 8/9 months and Microsoft are going to be announcing their direct competition to the PS4 very soon themselves, giving them a chance to one up Sony and steal their thunder?

After watching the reveal I was very happy and thought ‘If handled right Sony could be on to a real winner here’ but seeing how most people are acting in the non gaming world makes me wonder if that’s at all possible anymore. Its just another reminder that 99% of people have no sense or have any ability to make rational and logical opinions without just spouting the first, non important drivel that comes to their minds and when they do think they are making logical arguments they are actually just basing everything on their own pre conceptions.

I really dont see the appeal of this. "Play my game for me please." SMH. I dont see the appeal of help guides either but there's big interest in those as well so my opinion probably means this will be popular lol.

Why did people expect them to show more? It's releasing this Holiday. That's a good 9 months away. If they said too much now, the hype would've been dead by the time it released. Gotta save something for E3.

And they didn't show enough reasons to own one? C'mon.

Honestly, I think they're a bunch of dimwits. This was the most informative unveiling ever. And the fact they didn't see the physical casing or aren't smart enough to process the info they were given and understand the significance of what they saw... that's their problem. Lack of analytical ability is why they consistently miss hits and fail to see incoming bombas. If they can deliver what they promised last night, Sony just won next gen. And this is from someone who thought consoles were going to limp out of existence after this final round.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this. What they promised was crazy-ambitious. Delivery is another matter but they are not lacking in the vision department. Putting Cerny in charge of this thing was really, really smart.

Were they maybe trying to avoid the mistake they made with the PS3 where they modified multiple rear ports after the reveal?

I really didn't care about not seeing it. We saw the controller which is something we hold and look at. The console just sits in my entertainment unit.

I don't see this being a big feature. Neat, yes. Maybe someone is going to be able to make money by unlocking trophies for people in hard games. Hopefully Sony had the foresight to block trophy unlocking for things done by other people.

I warned everyone this would happen if they did a showing this early. You can't do a presser for a electronic product 8 months out these days with out being torn appart by the press. I am sure most of the press that was there felt their time was being wasted. No date, pricing,no machine or big time games were shown. Sony would of been much better off doing this in may instead. Worse yet in 2 weeks when the SG4 is announced the whole world outside NEOGAF will forget about the PS4.

These are mostly tech-focused websites who only want a gee-whiz physical gizmo they can admire and point at. Sony didn't have a box to show therefore they were disappointed. Their analysis is really no deeper than that.

CNet asks "why would anyone want to buy one of these?" How about the literally dozens of features and experiences possible on the platform Sony spelled out explicitly during the conference? Clearly all they care about is what the tech looks like; extremely shallow.

Why not? I don't need to see a box it know its real, I care about what's on the inside(hallmark card) and the games. I think showing the console and price at E3 will be a bigger slash because they need to have SOMETHING to show so Microsoft doesn't get all the coverage with their unveiling.

And no I wasn't expecting much at all from this "unveiling" I was shocked to see that many games and specs covered over a 2 hour period. I fully expected to see like 3 trailers or so, a release date, and graphs in just under an hour.

There's no reason to blow you're info load this early, and e3 will have more hype around it because they didn't last night.

I agree.

You have a booth with the world's eyes on you, and you squandered it by not releasing important details.

What's funny with the comments defending here is that you can replace words with like PS4 with Microsoft Surface and gaming industry with computer industry, and you will understand what is wrong what Sony did.

Go read the old topics about Microsoft Surface's reveal on GAF.

That's why there will be a re-reveal on the next E3 and not everything was shown.

It's sort of going on a date, you can't give everything up the first date. Wait until E3 or Pax east and then you can be fully committed and give her your salami.

Yeah I think it was stupid to announce the PS4 but not show the machine. But whatev's man it's done now.

LOL, we have the GDC, Pax East and E3 still to go.

in a world of 24h information cycle, people have lost their patience and their minds

I think it's one of those features that just sort of "happened" as a result of remote play. I think it's similar to them touting how the PS3 could support up to 7 controllers. It was a result of the actual tech at it's core and not something they strived for. This feels the same to me.

But I also feel like you're thinking a little smallish. While I'd never use that to get help from my friend, I'd use it to let my friend try out a game he's been wondering about. And I'm sure smarter developers than us could figure out a way to use that.

Yeah I think it was stupid to announce the PS4 but not show the machine. But whatev's man it's done now.

Lol, why do you care?

Yeah.. I forced myself to stay awake until the tangible information to be presented. It never was, and it left me with a funny feeling. I don't think it was Sony's best decision yet..

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms over the physical console not being revealed. They revealed all the specs, and showed games running on the hardware, the only thing they didn't show is what the plastic box will look like.

I wouldn't expect an E3 1995 level price reveal bomb, but at least they definitely get some room for maneuver.

The problem is everyone else in the eletronic world gives it up on the first date. You think samsung will do the SG4 presser and not show the device? Or say avaible 8 months from now? Sony clearly messed up here and does not understand how the world works now. When you announce you better well have more details than this and be closer to launch or you get destroyed by the press.

Why do you need to see the console?

And who the fuck is MICROSOFT to talk about announcing a console without showing the actual console?

uM4PDJH.jpg

LMAO i was going to post this is someone else didn't

I don't get this notion. I really don't give two cents what the console looks like as long as it can do what I want it to do. Original Xbox is ugly as sin yet it was capable of kicking PS2's ass in a lot of aspects.

Oh wow what trash is this?

The blood effects in Killzone: Shadow Fall, shown to a preview audience of 1,200 at the Hammerstein at Manhattan Center Wednesday night, looked chillingly real.
^ That's the first thing he can say about the graphics? Hello trying to steer opinions.

But the new PlayStation will have a difficult time, like the character in Killzone who was shooting at the people in the helicopter while hanging from the helicopter.
^ Dude is clearly underestimating how hard it is to hang from a helicopter while looking good and shootin bad guys.

These days, the next generation is playing games on the Web.
^ Not part of our reality.

...sigh the entire article fails to mention why PS4 is important.

Also, Remote-Gameplay-Assist in PS4 spread dat word.

It's not all that out of the ordinary. It's what Nintendo does, for one thing. The Wii isn't so old that its whole unveiling should be forgotten already.

the console was on the floor after the show. We knew what it looked like.

Why? So Microsoft can announce their launch date and price strategy first and they (Sony) can effectively react.

I never even mentioned price or launch date...

So wait, why does anybody want to see a physical shell again?

When stuff is shown this far in advance there are changes and adjustments 100% of the time. That just leads to potentially mislead consumers and cause message boards to erupt when they take away the second HDMI port.

Marginal feature at best.

You're missing a major point. This feature brings the socialability of playing in the same room without them being in the same room. Remember in the old days, you'd have a friend call you up, and he/she is all "I just got this super awesome game called Super Mario Bros! You should come try it!" And then you'd go over there and try it out, then probably convince your parents to buy it for you. Rinse. Repeat. This is how games got hyped in the old days!

This is an evolution of that idea; that idea adapted for a social, connected world. For people who have friends who lives miles, states, even countries away.

Granted, maybe this isn't a big deal, but it looks like a potential..*ahem*...gamechanger for social, for a company that, frankly, has had a lot of trouble this gen developing a good social community.

The cloud stuff interested me a lot, even though I hate cloud-based BC -_-;.
