Crytek wants 8GB of RAM in next-gen consoles

8GB is ridiculous overkill. Even with the most demanding PC games, 1.5GB VRAM and 2GB of system RAM is enough to run at 2560*1600p no problem.

I would expect something closer to 2GB in the next consoles.

I am eating so much crow right now. My original post was pretty short sighted, in hindsight.

Well, I guess that's that then.

You know what; I'm glad Crytek was very vocal about it, and I'm glad Sony is taking input from developers. It's a win-win for everyone.

I wasn't a believer but now I am and I'm loving it!

Crytek should have demand 20, let Sony meet them in the middle. Stupid Crytek settled too low. They failed all gamers.

If you actually play it, it is mediocre.

Not, its not.

I have nothing to be ashamed of in terms of prediction in this thread :)

3gb is the lowest, 4gb is very likely, but probably 3.5gb, but it really depends. Its 2013/2014 we're talking about, I wouldnt be suprised if they're targeting for 6gb.

Remember the trend of 8 times increase and this generation will be longer than those below
PSP had 64+4mb -> Vita has 512+128mb
PS2 had 32+4 -> PS3 256+256

Of course Crytek wants 8GB RAM. They would probably even want people to use nuclear powered consoles just to run Crysis 3 at max ;)

I've completed just the first three missions and I couldn't disagree more. Crysis 3 is fucking brilliant.

I could very easily see how gamers now used to Call of Duty style campaigns would find it annoying or lacking in fun, however. It's a perfect blend of Crysis and Crysis 2 with fantastic level design and awesome encounters. Unless it dips dramatically as the game proceeds this is shaping up to be one of the best shooters in a while.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Also to be fair we don't know the price yet. A lot of people said they didn't think they'd do it for price reasons. They might have, but the price might be ridiculous. That being said it's funny to read these old posts!

The thing is that if would have been a MS conference the assistants would have broke into applause... the only thing i heard were hard swallows ( the Kotaku guy the first )
If it was a Microsoft press conference it would have been a dancer on stage taming a lion while jumping through a flaming hoop that says "EIGHT GIGABYTES OF FUCKING RAM".

Nothing beats the PS3 launch threads... Who needs 60 gig hard drives, who needs blu-ray players, who needs wifi capabilities, keep the costs down.

Though I will admit, I was surprised Sony is giving 8 gigs of GDDR5 RAM, and while PC games will ultimately surpass what the PS4 is capable of, be prepared to be blown away by what devs will be able to do.

Think about it, games like Watch Dogs, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, were running on paltry ps3 hardware.

There is so much you can do when you have set hardware to work with. It's why I was really hopeful about the Steambox, that finally PC gaming will have a group of users with ultimately the same hardware that devs can take note of. Far too often, launches of games are hampered by driver issues, different hardware etc.

I just want to go on record and say I didn't give in to some of GAF's pessimism and inability to look forward. Here's my post earlier in the thread, although I did predict the year wrong so take it as you will.

Do people honestly think that consoles released in 2015 will have only 2 gigs of RAM? Puff puff pass, man, don't hog it all.

I'm not posting this as a "fuck you" to the people that gave me shit in this/other threads, but I figure I at least get to show that I wasn't wrong, and am not eating, the crow.

i called people stupid in the thread long time ago who were thinking that ps4/720 would have more 2 gigs of ram. boy was i wrong.

Weren't we still hopeful for a 2012 release when this thread was created?
Ram densities doubling this year explains 4GB-> 8GB so naturally it looks less outlandish now.

Even then noone was expecting 8GB on the 19th of february

I have a feeling that Crytek wanting 8GB of RAM has backfired on MS.

We all know that Crytek are going to be doing a exclusive for MS so chances are their opinions mattered in development of Durango. What are the chances that MS obliged thinking DDR3 was the only possible solution, to now have that completely bite them in the arse with Sony's announcement of 8GB of GDDR5

A lot of people were actually saying 2014 and 2015 if I remember correctly, which is why I said it in my quote...and they STILL were saying 8 gigs was totally ridiculous.

Tiago said in his statement that it is great that minimum base for next gen is now 8 GB. Does that imply Microsoft has 8+ GB (think 12 with 8 reserved for games)?

I think it was more that PC devs can start making games with 8GB as a minimum in mind without it severely limiting their abilities to port it to consoles. Who knows though, until Microsoft comes out and confirms what they're packing.

Nice

I think the biggest surprise was that it was 8GB DDR5 though. No one expected it. Rumors were 4GB DDR5 and most people were fine with it.

Makes me wonder what MS will do. I believe the rumor was 8gb of DDR3 for them.

We thought PS4 was going to be 4GB, right? And MS upped the RAM on the 360 last minute. So maybe after the PS4 announcement they've called in a quick RAM boost to steal some show. They're using DDR3, right? So they could do 12 GB, sure.

My favorite parts of these old ram threads are the die hards ripping people throats out at the mere suggestion that they would use DDR3 ram in a console when 2/3 of the Gen 8 consoles are using it.

The PS4 looks like it's more powerful than my current PC and I can play Crysis 2 on Extreme/Ultra around 30-45fps. I would expect the PS4 to easily equal and surpass that. And whilst my PC cost around £900 I doubt the PS4 will be more than half that, probably less. It's got the muscle.

They would be lucky to get half of that. I am expecting more like 2GB, 8GB is just crazy talk. It would be nice no doubt, but I just don't see that happening.

I need to eat my crow as well. No way did I think any console would get 8gb of ram this upcoming generation. I have been gaming on 360 and xbox since they were both out and with the hardware PS4 is showing, I will definitely be picking one up around launch.
