PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

Damn, the face buttons are much smaller and closer together. That will make playing fighting games much harder for those who play claw style.... That's not good :(
No, not smaller at all. The square and circle button ARE closer together, however, so the square and circle are now the same distance away from each other as the cross and triangle are; symmetrically spaced.

Button sizes aren't smaller, though. They are further apart from the directional buttons which may make them seem smaller in that shot as they're further away from the POV.

You're the best person on the internet.

Makes that new controller look even better.

Edit: Can I ask how you know you got the scale right though? I'm guessing you were using the sticks, buttons, and dpads as your reference point? Probably the correct assumption, but I don't know if we can be sure. Still, hat's off.
Thanks. I mostly used the PS buttons along with the sticks, and for the angled shot the L/R button widths along with the mini USB port taking into account the perspective differences.

What's interesting is how further apart the dpad and PS buttons are from each other, same with the analog sticks. I guess that's to address the issue big-handed people have when steering the left stick to the right while pushing the right stick to the left (thumbs bump into each other and cause slippage).

The triggers are obviously more trigger-shaped and angular, but they're also actually closer to the L1/R1 buttons in the sense of where you'd be resting your fingers on them. Speaking of L1/R1, they're much larger. It's not illustrated too well in the gif due to the angle, but the fact that it's an oval shape might make pressing it a bit easier.

Now the most significant change is obviously the grips. What the've done is reduce the angle of the dive that each grip takes from the main body, and at the same time made each grip wider/longer in doing so.

Can't wait to get my hands on one, or at least hear some impressions from E3. As far as I can tell, it's an excellent evolution of the DualShock.

Are they actually calling this the DS4?
DualShock 4, yeah. No where written on the actual controller, though, so it's subject to change from now till release I suppose. Not sure it matters, though.

Apparently they have some new rumble tech in there as well. (thought I read that somewhere in the press release)

I'm guessing the rumbling tech is going to be stereo rumbling.
Wasn't there a lot of talk back when Sony re-introduced rumble for the PS3 that they would/might improve the tech based on some new patents, or new developments in the technology, that didn't materialise?

I wish there was a pic from the bottom. I wonder how that bulge is. One of the things I hate about the 360 pad is the box at the bottom. I like to spread my fingers that are underneath the controller. Hopefully, the DS4 bulge is only at the very front of the pad.

Looks like Sony really improved the controller for the better this time. I'm still not a fan of the high polish around the D-pad and the XO buttons, though. Seems a bit odd.

I've always been firm believer of that the Xbox 360 was much more ergonomic, but seems like Microsoft has got some competition now.

Don't judge it until you get a good look at it. During the conference it turned a translucent blue under lighting, which I think looked pretty killer.

Oh dang. Might not be as bad then. I'm just not too good with polished surfaces and fingerprints.

I can't judge it completely from the pictures. But has the backside of the new PS controller some sort of rubber-ish material?

Thanks for this (and you too nib95). I think I've said it before in this thread, but it appears that they've fixed just about everything I've disliked about the DS3. It's a dislike that has made me chose the 360 version of multi-platform games in most cases.

Dude, fantastic work here. Really highlights the differences well. Nice commentary to boot.

Opposite for me, I'm glad that it's just textured plastic. Can't stand rubber over long periods of ownership, it just starts feeling grody as hell.

Agreed, I hope it's plastic, rubber gets dirty and sweaty, I don't like it.

Btw great job Sentry, the gif shows upgrades I couldn't see before.

Looks like a very comfortable controller and an actual improvement over the previous DS series of controllers. Well, I suppose I can say I did like the convex analog sticks of the previous controllers, but a concave is fine too. I'm especially liking it has grip in the back, that's a definite plus for me.

I wish they stuck with the Vita Dpad. :(
I keep seeing this mentioned, but I don't follow exactly. What was so great about the Vita's dpad vs the current one? I've always thought the DS dpad was the best out there.

Thanks, guys!

The controller was one of the main reasons I never bought a PS3. I disliked the PS2's controller, and didn't really see the DS3 as much of an upgrade.

I'll have to wait and see how the new one feels in my hands, but it seems like it'll be way more comfortable. The extra material for the palm of your hands in the grips is so important. Triggers look better too.

Great post Sentry!

This image highlights one of the biggest improvements. I was holding the DS3 last night, thinking how much more comfortable the 360 controller is due to the shape supporting the part of your palm near to your thumb. I believe that this lack of support on the DS1-3 is what gives rise to the hand cramp that some people complain about. The DS4 addresses this wonderfully, it will be a huge improvement.

And you can really see the difference in the triggers here, fantastic stuff.

It looks really REALLY good. I think it's a massive upgrade from previous controllers. The triggers look comfy I can't wait to put my hands on it.

Is this from feeling it?, because it could just be hard textured plastic.
It looks too shiny to be rubber from that pic.
Hard textured plastic > rubber

I've got a Logitech mouse and it looks terrible after all this use. Dust is buried deep and half of it looks scratched.

Now that I see them compared in that manner, I have to say I dislike the bigger handles, and their angle, and the overall bigger size. The old DS was absolutely perfect for my hands, and my hands aren't even small. I've always thought it's not about the size of your hands, but how you hold it. If you held it like the 360 pad, you held it wrong. I really dislike the idea of bastardizing the DS to suit others than the three generations of userbase, who mostly seemed to like the way it was. Hopefully it's not as bad as it seems, and hopefully it's not much heavier either.

Dat gloss on the surface that the D-pad and face buttons are sitting on is going to be the bane of the obsessive compulsive smudge cleaner inside of me.

This controller seems like a beast. Better rumble, better triggers, better sticks.

tighter sticks is what I need, love the heftier look also

That's his opinion though. Maybe you, me and a lot of people will hate 'em? I like the DS3 sticks, unlike dev guy there..

Same here. I'm worried the protruding edges will make thumbs sore during longer gaming sessions, like the 360 sticks did. I never had problems with the DS3 sticks, quite the contrary.
