First Look at the New Spider-Man Costume

Well she's certainly not playing comic book Gwen that's for sure. Mary Jane is supposed to be this spunky, fun character on the surface with her own demons that she's not showing anyone. And she's probably one of the few characters that really gets Peter and why he does the things hes do. Sounds like Emma's Gwen to me. It's not a carbon copy of course but there is more MJ than Gwen in the character that she plays.
All depends on your perspective, I guess. How do you define "comic book Gwen" or "comic book" anyone, as in that regard MJ from Raimi's SM was a piss poor MJ in many ways as well.

Also have to take into account that they borrow a lot from the Ultimate uni and mix and match, along with just creating a new character. I don't think she was more MJ than Gwen, really. MJ was never scientifically inclined to any degree, nor did she have a relationship with her father that made her weary of Spidey, etc. So really you could say either or depending on how you spin it.

MJ is supposed to be spunky, sure, but she's also supposed to be really 'out there' and no where near as behaved/reserved as Gwen is. That's part of her evolution as well.

Raimi's MJ was so far removed from what the character is supposed to be like it wasn't even funny.

And sure MJ was never into science so I'll give you that (and the dad thing), and I haven't read enough Ultimate to comment on any of the characters in that universe. But if we're strictly talking 616 Gwen she was kind of a bitch. Constantly nagging on Peter and never really understood what made him tick. (This can be applied to that she didn't really know him since Spider-Man is part of who is though.) The best thing that happened to the character was her death. After that the writers have put her on some sort of pedestal where she has become this pure, lovable girl. If I had only been exposed to the character through her original run I could almost (but only almost) believe that she would have had sex with Norman.

A lot of the stuff in Emma's Gwen is obviously Gwen. Like being into science and her relationship with her dad. Those are like the basics of her character, if you took them away it would be like taking away Peter growing up with May and Ben. But all that other stuff in the movie was more reminiscent of MJ that comic book Gwen in my opinion.

So it's likely MJ is more then a cameo. I thought shed only have a small part in this before becoming a main character in the 3rd film

Time will tell when we see how much of the set photos contain her in them, but even then we can't really know. I think they're shooting another scene later today (possibly MJ considering she was on set preparing yesterday) so we'll see what gets 'leaked'.

It's still possible that she's only in a handful of scenes and not a really focal character, but she's still definitely more than a cameo role as well. Perhaps even dating Harry at some point?

Either way it's great that they're establishing her now imo. Praying this scrip is good so we'll be able to move onto an ASM3 with confidence

At least they're doing the practical swinging again.

I never really liked the Raimi costume's "angry eyes". The costume on the whole was much better than Webb's first one (as they've acknowledged by stealing it wholesale), but the new eyes are straight from the comics. I like it.

They're filming scenes like three blocks away from my home. I just dropped by and they're using someone's crappy house/driveway for it! Too many crew members blocking up the driveway alley for me to see anything. :(

I think he nailed the jocular aspect way better than Tobey.
Yeah, Toby always felt like he was trying to squeeze an Oscar out if the role.

The material and his own abilities prevented that from ever being on the table.

ASM was okay. The best part was the last few seconds though.

Maguire was good but Garfield WAY better. Less of a whiny dork and more of a loner.

Spiderman 1 & 2 is 50 times better than ASM, ASM is horrible, the crane scene was so laughable with all of them lining up the cranes for him, Lizard was horrible the CGI for him sucked, while Garfield is the better Spiderman, ASM movie sucks...

Yep. He is the Spider-Man that the Avengers would respect but still groan whenever they had to listen to him run his mouth.

Practically perfect, in essence.
Yeah... :'(

He wants to be a part of the MCU, too. Can't the studios just agree to all swallow their pride and be awesome for once!?

Tobey was the most sincere Parker. I loved him in 2. I agree Garfield is a better Spidey, but I disagree on being a better Peter.

I wish Raimi could keep making these movies :(

Is his mask just a helmet now? ^

I don't think the CGI sucked, but the design certainly did.

Pretty sure this movie starts off with them graduating from HS. Or at least they're out of HS somewhere in this one.

He meets Harry (Dane DeHaan), who's apparently his old time childhood friend or something. Which is weird, but makes a lot of sense. Harry's dad is Osborn, who Peter's dad worked for/with when they were kids. Should be interesting.

What I like about that is it's a carbon copy of one of the best story arcs in Ult. SM (venom origins) but replacing Bock who's his chldhoodfriend/dads worked together, with Harry. And instead of the two guys working together on the venom suit (cures cancer etc) in ASM it's them working on cross-species genetics and whatnot (to cure Osborn). If they play it smart, it could be great.

Well that would be grand. I agree with you on the Ultimate Venom arc being a great story arc but it pales in comparison to the original Harry Osbourne story in the 616 universe. Unfortunately, I don't think they're going to pursue the latter story for the fear of people comparing it to the Raimi arc, which is depressing because of how badly Harry's story wrapped up in the third film.

Given the hints laid out, you're probably bang on target about Harry replacing Brock with the venom suit being the result of Richard Parker's cross-species research.

Spider-Man needs to wear a coat. He's fucking part-spider. What happens if it starts raining? Did you never listen to any nursery rhymes?

Whiny dork is maguire's best suit. I'm so happy he's not spider-man anymore.

I still need to see ASM
i loved ASM. I need to disagree with 90% of the guys in GAF. I thought it was a good movie and I liked the reworked origin..

His Parker was the same guy in all the movies. Just a total loser geek.

Probably just people actually thinking it's her on set/shooting a scene and looking like that, haha.

Ugh, Dane Dehaan is no way physically Imposing enough to be Venom IMO.

I remember when Emma Stone was cast for TASM and we all assumed it would be MJ because of the red hair. Then they pulled the rug out from under us and cast her as Gwen instead.

He has a ripped costume. Underneath the trenchcoat are several prosthetic legs protruding from him. This time, Spidey goes too far into experimenting with human/animal genetics and becomes Man-Spider, y'all.
As weird as the concept really is, it's a good way to lessen the gap between Spider-Man's powers and those like Rhino, Scorpion, etc. It seems like he was really lucky to gain spider-powers and have zero side-effects.

Trying to rid himself of powers did give him four extra arms; that's a plausible start.

Like people have been saying, it looks great.

I wish they didn't have the webs pop out like that though. It does look very similar to the Raimi flicks but I think the eyes are much better. Surprising they didn't really do that from the very beginning.

It seems pretty obvious that they took a lot of the criticism into consideration.
