STEAM announcements & updates 2013 - Year of the SteamBox

The game's called fucking Don't Starve, it's no surprise there's barely any meat, Sherlock!

I don't know the reason for the fascination with that game, either. Just like with FTL, it's one of those game whose concept and screenshots don't appeal to me at all.

Don't starve looks like a work in progress to me. It could be great or it could be mediocre depending on how much they do with it. Time will tell.

FTL was my game of the year last year. The concept and screens didn't appeal to me either...but then I played it...a lot. Give it a go.

Sees Oregon Trail on Steam.

> Gets excited, opens wallet.

Sees Oregon Trail on Steam is some zombie tripe.

> I hate video games.

That's kind of how it went for me. Except I got excited and clicked on it, saw the old graphics and was like "holy shit!" and then I went "...wait a minute there was no car in oregon trail".

Then I noticed the name and was devastated.

Not Steam related but does anyone want a key for Neverwinter's beta? It should start this friday, and I don't think I'm gonna use it.

I think your ability to enjoy Don't Starve pretty much all depends on how much you like games like Minecraft and Terraria. While it has a few of it's own unique qualities (the grim fairy tale art and top down perspective in particular), like those games it's all about unscripted gameplay in a randomly generated environment. I'm loving Don't Starve because I love sandbox-y gameplay that allows me to create my own, unique experience. That, and I love inventory management and survival elements in games, the constant state of tension is like a high for me.

But at the same time, I can see how someone could be disinterested in the constant grind of gathering, crafting and trying not to starve. I think it's unfair to say it's as shallow as a Facebook game, there's plenty of depth in crafting and various cool shit to see, but it does lack the Lego appeal of Terraria or Minecraft since you can't build anything but basic, one story structures.
Thanks, you just saved me whatever Don't Starve costs. I played like 40 minutes of Terraria and didn't like it, I also didn't understand anything.

Damn, I turn my back on Steam GAF for a moment, and *pop*, there goes a copy of Don't Starve - pesky work commitments. Might have to split a purchase of that with someone soon, I think...

Speaking of Steam chat, is that web gateway thingy still up and running, and if so, could someone please kindly post the URL? Thank ye.

No problem, but as a fan of Terraria I gotta point out that the first 40 minutes are not a good representative of the next 40 to infitinity hours you'll end up playing if it gets it's hooks in you. ;)

Yeah, piece of cake!

I'm now a proud owner of DN3D on Steam. Now all I need to do is kick out my sister from the PC so I can play it.

One day I'll decide to do nothing but sit on my computer and play all the games I haven't finished yet, for the rest of my life. I wish I could start today, there's so much stuff I've yet to enjoy.

And maybe you're right, and Terraria and Don't Starve are great games that I need to persist with until they click with me. The problem is that I have so many other games that I can't really justify spending time with one I'm not enjoying in the hopes that I get to like it in the future.

The same happened with Dark Souls. I'm ashamed of myself :/

I found you a friend!

Looking for someone to split a Don't Starve 2-pack with. You'll get access to the beta (Full game available April 23rd) as well as the two TF2 promo items. Looking for $6 via Paypal. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I used to ring a callback service and tell my sister someone was on the phone for her when I wanted to get on the NES if she was hogging it. Got into sooo much trouble at how much it cost. Ah the joys of sibling rivalry.

Nitpick, but that's not all of them. I remember there being several more with names like Duke!Zone and Duke!Xtreme. They might not have been officially licensed by 3DR though. Wonder who owns the rights to them now.

Duke!ZONE is a shovelware expansion pack released in 1996 by WizardWorks

It contains 500 usermaps that were collected from BBSes and the Internet.

All-Star Racing Transformed is all kinds of rad by what I played some far, but there's some pretty noticeable input lag, at least with v-sync on (will try off but I cant stand tearing). I think it was an issue on the first game as well but it is much noticeable here when you have to drive planes or boats.

The boats are slow to respond to turns by nature, but if the planes and cars lag too, then yeah. I'm almost certain I play with v-sync off and I didn't notice any tearing, so I'd give that a shot.

But yeah, seconding that it's a fantastic game. I dumped so many hours into that. I'm a bit burnt out now after 30 hours or something, but hopefully I'll get a second wind because it really is a blast (and I want all the stars).

First I've ever heard/seen this complaint before

There was this other Duke Nukem pack.
It included a ridiculous number of mods. One of the goofier ones was that while Duke was in his jetpack, he could take exploding shits on enemies below him.

Right now I'm more inclined to make fun of you for Tomb Raider than angry birds. At least that game knows what it is and doesn't try to pretend to be anything else.

Believe it or not I'm currently playing mass effect 2...for the first time after just finishing 1.

I had heard a lot about how they ruined the series and dumbed everything down. And you know what? It actually shits all over the first game. Sure mass effect 1 was actually a RPG, but it was a terrible RPG. I'll take me some brain dead shooting for $5 thanks.

My wish list is all call of duty games. I don't like call of duty games, but if I ever win the steam "ten games from your wishlist" that is like $10k in prizes for Australians.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is $50 in the US and $20 in AU. Wouldn't you know when AU finally gets great pricing on a game it's on something terrible.
