PS Blog GDC Wrap-up: Indie Developers Choose PS4, PS3, PS Vita

Title is kind of misleading. I assumed this was a Gamasutra or Edge piece, instead of PR blog post.

OP just copied the Blog post's title -- I agree he probably should have mentioned the source in the title, but still, plenty of people in here who've actually read the content properly. Which is good. Still think the title could do with a change btw... "Indie Developers Choose PS4, PS3, PS Vita", says Sony

Hotline miami is a really nice get, and spelunky looks awesome too - not actually played that

And you wonder why GAF is known as a Sony fanboy forum. What are they supposed to say, Indie developers chose iOS? The PS4 looks like a very appealing platform, but this whole "SONY ALREADY WON NEXT-GEN" shtick has got to stop. Microsoft hasn't shown anything yet.

GAF isn't known as a forum that favors any single platform. You simply see what you choose to see. And yes, there are alot of Sony threads this week because Sony is making a big push at GDC and PAX while MS and Nintendo are not.

Vita is really carving out a future for itself as a very viable albeit niche player in the market. At this point, that's exactly what it needs to be doing. It's dead as a mainstream retail success, but it's got a hell of a lot to offer other area's of the market.

I bought and sold a launch Vita, and up until recently I didn't regret that for even a second, but between PS+ and recent gains with the indie market, I'm pining for one now.

I don't see how you can claim its misleading just because you guessed wrongly about the author. It says nothing to make anybody believe its from anywhere particular.

Especially since Microsoft haven't announced their plans yet. I don't see why these indie developers wouldn't want to be there as well, as a whole lot of them are already on PC.

Well this goes back to the Rob Crossley piece on CVG about Microsoft not courting these small and middle-sized devs at GDC, and it not really being a very wise thing to do.

I want more iOS and PSN/XBLA games on Vita. No excuse for iOS games not to be ported as the iPad hardware is too similar to Vita.

iOS ports
Vice City HD
Max Payne
The World Ends with You
LostWinds 1 and 2
Bastion
Phoenix Wright
Ghost Trick
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Crazy Taxi
The Room
Infinity Blade
Sky Gamblers
Nova
Modern Combat 4
Mutant Mudds

PSN/XBLA ports
Fez
Braid
Journey
The Unfinished Swan
Castle Crashers
Super Meat Boy

Are you kidding me? A Sony fanboy forum? It was the 'Vita is dead' forum for the best part of the last twelve months.

MS doesn't get much recognition on these boards compared to Sony but to say Gaf is Sony land is beyond stretching the truth.

Dat warrior complex.

Hopefully they will have a Unity for PS Mobile at a lower cost. This should be even more helpful for indies, if SCE solves the performance issues with the PS Vita's PS Mobile VM, as it gives you access to a much wider variety of platforms.

Pricing and delivery of Unity for PlayStation will likely differ by platform, and is something that we’ll be sharing with developers when ready. This is a very exciting announcement, though, and has great potential for all platforms impacted, as you’ve mentioned.
Thanks for the question and thanks to David for this great announcement!

What would be a good price for Unity for PS mobile? PSM SDK costs $99, but you won't need it if you use Unity, so maybe $250? Does that sound fair?

I do agree that SCE needs to solve the performance issues with PSM. I heard that it's nearly impossible to try to create a 3D game on there.

MS don't give a shit about indies. They were useful in the early years of 360, but now it's all about the extended media.

I talked to the programmer for "They Bleed Pixels" at PAX, and he said he doesn't plan on bringing the game to XBLA because he said this exactly:

"They [MS] didn't just drop indie support, they threw it on the ground and stomped on it. They don't care anymore."

Also, a lot of devs talked about how they used XNA tools (MS's tools) to make their games, but now since it's dropped (as of last month) they don't plan on working with it anymore and are looking for other "venues" and "platforms" to go to.

I think things are very bleak for MS, and the longer they hold out on announcing their next platform AND their tools for them, it'll only get worse.

Microsoft has a very strong indie lineup perhaps better than the ps3 ever had. I guess perception is reality. Microsoft suffers in the quantity of big retail releases for the past few years. XBLA is really great.

PS3 has not suffered at all really. That includes retail and PSN which is arguably as good as XBLA despite some opinions.

The best thing about 360 is the XBLA games not really the XBLA service (pay to play).

My biggest problem with the ps3 is not having very many great first party games. They release a lot of games I am not interested in or games that are serious let downs.

Now they do, and for all of this generation they have, but this is about next gen. And it sounds like Sony is doing a better job than Microsoft at securing next gen indie titles.

Its me what?I copy and paste the title and have a link to it in the op.

I will asked for a title change though.

I'm guessing he's referring to your Sony love. It's not like you hide it. It's also not a bad thing since you rarely if ever bag on other platforms. You simply love Sony. I'm not sure why it needs a title change. It's accurate. Indies are coming to Vita and PS4. That's the story. The fanboy angle isn't yours, it's more the people that say stupid shit like, "LOL Sony is running away with this already!" before one console has even been announced. Meanwhile there's Nintendo over there also providing a nice home to indies. At the end of the day, it looks like between iOS/Android, Sony, and Nintendo indies aren't going anywhere. Thank god for that. It's still weird to see Microsoft give them the middle finger though (starting with the killing of XNA).

I think they've slowed down a little in that regard. Still a good solid and somewhat diverse last year but you can tell things are winding down and they are focused on next gen.

XBLA is in fact a pay-to-play service. Just like Steam. Just like the eshop. Just like PSN. I'm guessing it was your attempt to take a veiled shot at *XBL*, which XBLA is not. Anyone can buy and play XBLA titles, and anyone can download and play the XBLA demos regardless of subscription.

When Microsoft sees an indie game they like, they'll secure it, no matter what; even if Sony gets more independents, MS will absolutely go apeshit in securing the big blockbusters.

I think you are underestimating them; severely underestimating them. Time will tell.

Back on topic: I applaud Sony for this, an open environment is one that fosters creativity and vision.

You've posted similar things in several threads, but do is it your own speculation or have you heard something to indicate they'll be doing this. Because securing the big blockbusters as exclusives, something that they didn't even do this gen, would be extremely expensive. Black Ops 2 for example made 1b in 15 days. Activision is able to do that by releasing it on every platform possible. Do you think that MS would be willing to pay them whatever needed to offset the money that they'll no longer get from releasing their games on non-MS platforms?

Super Meat Boy
Castle Crashers/Alien Hominid <- I don't care if these are technically indie or not. They are must-haves.

What's so hard to understand Sony. Also, while you're doing things, do Dyad!

Obviously I don't care if it's not on Vita. Indies = handheld now.

We know Terraria could be coming to Vita but anyone know if Minecraft is a possibility at all?

What a joke of a thread tittle. Sony gets tittles that other platforms (even xbla) have had for years and somehow their the home of indie games now.

Not to even go into the fact that none of these games will transfer over to the ps4.

Solid list. More I hear, more I'm tempted to buy a Vita. If the remote play thing with PS4 comes to fruition, I'll buy one. That plus PSN+ Vita offerings would just be too much to pass up on.

I believe that the remote play is a requirement for PS4 titles. The Witcher 3 developer mentioned it in an interview a week or so ago I believe

This would work out so freaking amazing especially if retail games are Day 1 DD and I can play over wifi at work ;P

My biggest question is going to be about the laggggggg

who would've known, noobasaur shitting up yet another sony thread.

I don't care where the the thread tittle came from. He should have had the sense to change it.

I still don't see what's wrong with the thread title. Did the indie devs in question not choose to develop for PS4/Vita? It seems like they did. Is your problem that you're reading the title and adding in your mind "...over PC/Xbox/iOS/Nintendo"? Because they have'nt done that. They'd be morons to choose one platform. They're indies. They need as much exposure they can get. Sony's struggled with indies for a long time, which is why the title fits. They're finally getting their act together.
