Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

Honestly the only guides I ever thought worth buying were the Nintendo Power ones but those are long gone now :/

I have a ton of those but I don't think I ever actually bought one -- giving one as a free bonus with NP subscription was genius.

Seeing as there's practically nothing coming to retail in July currently, it'd be smart of Atlus to release then. SMTIV would practically own the month for me.

Had no idea there was a SMT vs Persona beef. I thought SMT fans just liked both series.

I'm guessing it's bitterness over Persona becoming really popular and getting all of Atlus' budget while mainline SMT has gone from console release with full 3D demons to a handheld release.

Interesting. If they were from rival companies I can understand. Just interesting.

Traditional megaten fans are salty with the Persona games primary because:

#1 They get more attention than the main-line games.
#2 They had much of the series take a friendly anime-like take. Outside of SMTIV and Strange Journey nearly all Megaten games since Persona 3 have that upbeat cartoony feel and look (think Devil Surivior series), at least compared to the traditional Megaten games.

No bald cap? Lies!
My 3 favorite Megaten games are SMT Nocturne, Persona 2 Duology and Persona 4. Id put Nocturne and P2 at tied, and P4 is under them two. I suspect that Soul Hackers will take the spot from P4

I'm starved for SH info. Getting it is a forgone conclusion, it will be mine, but there isn't a whole lot of info on it and its comparison to other SMT games. So I still don't know what to fully expect of it. Other than it being similar to SJ gameplay wise, there isn't much info out there.

One of the only reviews of the game is of the original PSX version on RPGFans by a person who wasn't very fluent in Japanese. So not so helpful in non-gameplay stuff.

Devil Survivor was just an initial impression. Devil Survivor is much more violent than Persona 3/4

And Persona being somewhat exclusive to Sony, with P4A being the exception.

It's been a long time since I played an actual Shin Megami Tensei game that wasn't Persona... I just don't remember. I hope I enjoy SMT4. I really do.

Two different retailers in two different countries claiming July 16 makes it pretty solid. Though Atlus could still change it, I think we'll go with that for now.

I'm officially hyped. The month of July will be very fulfilling.

Actually it's because Persona mutated into a creepy dating sim, complete with zany "let's peak at the girls in the bath!!!" scenes and simulated sex with robots.

And yet between Persona 4 and a possible Persona 5 announcement ATLUS announced TWO mainline SMT games. And the FE crossover. And Devil Survivor.

It's a bit silly.

I will admit that I haven't played the Devil Survivor games so if I'm wrong you have more than a right to correct me. But Megatens tone goes far beyond violence. Games like SMT II and III involve things such as slavery, racism, religion, cults, psychopathology, forced labor camps, while maintaining a very dark tone. If Devil Survivor displays such elements vibrantly I will more than accept to be called wrong. But from the distance the games don't seem to match SMTII and III in those respects.

But yeah, aside from that...

Devil Survivor 1 is a true blue Megaten scenario, trust me. Devil Survivor 2 is animeland.

I'd dislike Persona because it took SMT out of the spotlight but P2(both) and P3P are fucking fantastic. I still need to check out Golden too

So is this on a 4GB cart? I'm guessing the $10 are for that. Maybe if we whine enough, Atlus will pull a Capgod and drop the MSRP in the 11th hour.

Bingo.

Though this happens with every game series it seems. Old time fans get bugged the fuck out over petty shit like this when some new life gets into the fandom.
Well, sometimes it's sort of justified, as people who were fans of how something was get displaced by newer fans,a nd perhaps that design's a bit more mainstream than what was there before. I don't think it's really an issue here, I do imagine part of sticking with handhelds for SMTIV is that most probably don't really care THAT much about high end presentation here (look at SMT1 & 2, they were kind of ugly compared to other SNES games, and similar for Strange Journey, though I like the look anyway), whereas Persona's a bit more fixated on that so they'd want at least Vita hardware I'd imagine. I guess there's something to be said on how Persona changed from 1/2 and 3/4, but the territory of 1/2's pretty well covered by mainline MegaTen, just things got shit far harder there.

Personally, I mainly like that MegaTen just isn't like other JRPGs period, 3 and 4 are close as it gets, and you're still dealing with more of an urban fantasy adventure with a unique dungeon/social framework whose closest analog MIGHT BE Sakura Wars and even that's a really big stretch.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

I doubt they'll drop it. Atlus will probably provide goodies with the game though.

I don't think there should be any beef, but I am a little flabbergasted when someone asks for SMT recommendations and people say Persona 4 (a game I genuinely love).

The petty animus is childish, but there's no problem in admitting there's some fair differences.

As long as the existence of persona hasn't negatively impacted the gameplay of SMT, then what's the beef? At least it's not like persona was a mainline SMT game that forced all mainline SMT's to have dating/life sim elements.

You get to have both! If you're a fan of P1 and P2, and you don't like the dating sim elements of later games, well then that's a different story...

DS2 was basically Evangelion with Demons intead of Evas. :p

Nah. People keep saying that, but it's really not. It's much more of a copy of Eva-clones than Eva itself. In fact, the designer they got to design the Septentriones is the manga artist who created Bokurano, one of many stories which take the "Eva" formula and makes a spin on it.

I'm gonna have to agree with TurnipFritters on this:

And isn't SMT IV the only mainline game announced in that period? Unless we're counting Strange Journey.

Resident Evil NORMALLY can be relied on for huge sales, though it seemed to fail that time. This is going to only sell modestly, and mainly to people who'd pay $50 for this anyway, so it's reasonably safe to do I think. Like noted you DO get far better hours to dollar than you would for something like Resident Evil, so I'm OK with it.

Most people ARE going to see Persona as a MegaTen game, and the series is really diverse even when factoring out 3/4. It's completely fair to recommend that, with the caveat that you also recommend SMT:N so they can see both sides of the coin and go from there, as they're arguably the pinnacles of the two sides of the series.

Most of the other entries are somewhere in between too, with Devil Survivor leaning closer to Persona, Digital Devil Saga closer to SMT, and Devil Summoner it's own weird little point.

Flabbergasted is a little much, when Atlus USA uses the SMT branding for everything it's not difficult to see why lots of people would be confused.

Pleasantly surprised that this is coming out so soon. I was thinking we would be looking at October or November as a more likely release date.

I can't wait to play this, even though Soul Hackers will come first. It's a good time to be a Megaten fan.

I don't think time should matter that much that much, There's a lot of horrible RPG's that are long as fuck.

But SMT4 is going to be awesome.

Wow, I expected to get that one next year..!!

On the JRPG front, this summer, we're getting:

-Dragon's Crown
-Tales of Xillia
-SMT IV
-Time & Eternity
-Project X Zone
-FFXIV: A Realm Reborn

Ys: Memories of Celceta will most likely fall just outside the summer window, and the Fall is full of JRPGs too. What a great year!

Project X Zone is apparently pretty not good, so, uh, you may wanna hold out on buying that.

Fans should be grateful for both series. Without SMT:N gaining popularity over here, we probably never would have got Persona. And if it weren't for the successes of the Persona series, we might not have received continued support in the SMT series.
