Thief on PS4 looks 'almost identical' to PC version, runs on Unreal Engine 3

The PS4 version of Thief will look "really, really close" to the PC version, the game's producer Stephane Roy has claimed, before hinting at a "special feature" that may only be found in the PC version.

"For Thief, everything started on PC," Roy explained in an interview with VideoGamer.com. "So for example, all the interface, the menu and stuff like that, we want to adapt it [for next-gen consoles].

"But for a visual aspect - especially for a game like Thief - it's not a question of pushing more polygons, [or] now I can have 200 enemies at the same time and not just 100 enemies. So on our side, it's more a question of gameplay, the movement, stuff like that. I think with the next-gen, yeah visually speaking, with the high-end PC and next-gen it's going to be really, really close, honestly."

Despite the similarities between the console and PC versions, however, Eidos Montreal may look to take advantage of high-spec PC graphics cards, Roy teases.

"Maybe we are going to push a special feature with the PC because of working with the video card and stuff like that," he continued, "but it's not like 10 years ago where the difference was huge."

A Square Enix representative added that the team already has a build of the game running on PS4 that looks "almost identical" to the PC version.

Thief is being built using a modified version of Unreal Engine 3, not Unreal Engine 4, Eidos Montreal has confirmed.

Despite being one of the first next-gen titles to be revealed, the game's producer Stephane Roy explained that the decision to stick with Unreal Engine 3 rather than opt for Epic's next-gen Unreal Engine 4 was a matter of timing and "flexibility".

"Keep in mind when we started, Unreal 4 was [still in] development," Roy explained to VideoGamer.com.

I have a question, when we were transitioning from ps2/xbox era to ps3/360 how were PC games looking at the time? Did we have these same statements that the console version would look close to their suprior PC versions? Or was the jump from that gen to our current gen that huge? (Bascially were the ps3 and 360 more "powerful" then pc's at the start of current gen?)

Less post processing is and 30fps probably. Resolution and AA should be about the same.

I wish they would cheap out on the AA and cheap out even more on the post processing and aim for 60...

But yeah, what you're describing is the most likely scenario. This will be a generation of 1080p30 games with FXAA.

I'm no PC gamer, but this kind of spinning and borderline dishonesty is kind of offensive lol.

The 360 was, the Xenos GPU was more powerfull than the 7800 GTX. The PS3 wasn't, the 8800 GTX was already out by that time.

Consoles used to be way ahead of PCs upon release and now they are behind from day 1? Oh man

PSX and N64 produced better results on average, but the tables turned when dedicated video cards became a big deal.

Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube were not really ahead of PCs at launch in terms of absolute performance, just bang for your buck.

360 and PS3, again, mainly had a lead in terms of price. You could build a PC in late 2005 that would run CoD and Oblivion at higher settings and a better framerate than a 360.

Yeah that's the biggest difference between this gen and the next one. No one could play Oblivion on the PC back when it launched. When Thief 4/ Watch Dogs etc. launch later this year they will right off the bat look & play better on PCs.

Major difference between the two generations right here.

The games didn't always reflect that.

The 360 port of Doom 3 was sub-30FPS.

Won out in other contemporary games as well.

I wasn't sure how to feel about this game but the recent RPS preview made me really excited for a stealth game with a more old school approach. Why on earth they didn't release some gameplay footage when the game is supposed to look so impressive is beyond me though.

Here's my reply from the other thread:

I wonder how does one contextualize, "very close". Perhaps it'll be like Crysis 3 on PS3 vs PC. Eh, any way, I wonder how the nextbox will do.

I really hope those screens aren't a true representation of what the game will look like next gen in terms of IQ. If it does then lol@next gen hardware.

The current slew of screens look bizarre as if they were uprez'd from 720p image (or thereabouts) and then down sampled to 1080p.

Only and only from the stills (perhaps dynamic shadows and other real time visual effects may more than compensate in motion), besides Garrett's hand there it looks like it could be done on current gen consoles (esp. the skin shader).

No, I'm pretty sure they will look better.

its was a joke, thief 4 its a ue3 game who looks decent at best

at what cost? my gtx680 wasn´t free you know

PC comparisons are silly because its always theoretical. not everyone has an uber rig and not everyone has a piece of crap.

when comparing to PC you should always use the term "average" or "baseline"

Obviously, but most run at 1080p. (30% according to Steam Hardware).

Yeah, still to say identical is a bit much, besides super sampling just became accessible on AMD GPUs as they have been on Nvidia cards, and you know the funny thing is that super sampling > any type of AA. I'm also comparing it to my resent HD 7950 purchase, which I have clocked (stable) at 1200MHz, giving me 4.3TFLOPs and is keeping its temp under 70c under full load.

P.S. I've made 1 Bitcoin from it so far.

1080p definitely...not sure about 60fps.

Among console-oriented people who are excited about this stuff, you deserve a lot of credit for having reasonable expectations and keeping your cool.

Somewhere between the sneering PC elite and the console warrior who is incensed at the implication that his favorite machine isn't God's gift to man, there is Shinobi.

Where does it say that it will look almost identical? It already looks almost identical right now, it'll probably be identical by the time they finish.

I don't know... UE 3 games run like butter on PC architecture (well for me at least) So I would think that the PC4 version might get a high frame-rate unless they are using some crazy UE3.5 tech for dat gfx fidelity.
