Capcom USA VP Disappointed By Darkstalkers Resurrection Sales

March was a bad month to be release to be honest. So many good games came out that made people forget about it.

I'm a big fan of Capcom fighters and DS but like many didn't buy it as I'm a bit burnt out on fighters at the moment.
I will buy it when it goes on sale but it's not worth the full price to me, I don't have the time to get back into it competitively so I'm just going to mess around with it now and again.

It should have come out before MVC Origins and JoJo.

It's probably not doing anything amazing, but I'm sure it's getting more than adequate sales. You don't make the top 10 by doing nothing.

I think this is another case of Capcom expecting too much. You can't release an old duo of games of a very technical series, take out a bunch of content, and then expect it to sell like wildfire. They aren't playing all the angles right.

Anyway, as I said before, I still think it's pretty obvious that DS4 is on the horizon. Ono and Niitsuma have to be working on something and all the hallmarks are there. We'll just have to hope that they are a bit smarter in how they handle future releases.

What did they take out? The games are the arcade versions of the DS2 and 3. Donovan, Pyron and Phobos were not in the original DS3 to begin with far as I know.

Yeah, but they've been in every console port save the OG saturn release, right? I assume most people would think they're part of the roster.

Well how about...
BlazBlue: CT
BlazBlue: CS
BlazBlue: CS2
BlazBlue: CSEX
BlazBlue: CP

You got me there, except I'm pretty sure one or two of those were DLC updates. Dunno which ones (don't care/follow Blazblue very much).

Still, people make it sound as if every fighter is getting an update every 6 months and they have to pay for it when such an occasion is actually an exception to the rule.

If you look at it that way, then technically nothing was "taken out", but most people are familiar with the ports that have the additional characters.

It's beyond me why Capcom didn't include them with the option to ban them in online play for purists, just like they did with Oboro Bishamon. (Or just have a separate arrange mode.)

Arcade perfect is great, but not when in comes at the expense of having the most complete experience possible. Not everyone plays fighting games for the super hardcore FGC aspects of it, something I'm hoping Capcom is starting to realize.

I microwave steaks.
It would help if they didn't charge such a high price for it.
If it was $10, I would have bought it without hesitation. I was already burnt out for paying 15 for marvel super heroes/ mvc1. Now i'm just waiting for that inevitable sale.

Logged in, saw it was $21.95. Laughed and logged out again. I think you would have to be pretty seriously into it to pay that much, and if you are that into it? You'd already have one version of the game or another.

It's 1200 points, that's under ten pounds? That's not too bad at all for two games, really. Jojos being 1600 points was pretty ludicrous though. I'd never really even heard of it, manga or game, and likely still wouldn't have if I hadn't been reading shoryuken.com daily.

I guess Capcom's sales disappointment is like my disappointment at those missing characters. Still getting it down the line, but the way it's been described by players, there's no rush when I've got the PS2 version handy.

God, i miss arcades. Nothing beats the atmosphere of an arcade.

Eh, I prefer consoles. Less money spent down the line, plus you can always hook up with a friend for some sessions, much like at an arcade.

Bringing back the arcade scene would be pretty great, but I'm with Beef on some of the console advantages. I end up being better at something when I can practice with them. Either way, more offline play anywhere is ideal.

Maybe in 1996.

Most (older) KOF fans will change your quote to '98.

Not surprised in the least this is where this is going at all. Easy to condemn the future of the series based on this. I will give Capcom a bit of credit. They are standing behind the game and giving it a nice push by featuring it at tourneys and such. In the end if you're a fan for whatever reason and you want to see more you'll have to pay into this to show Capcom you want more. As eloquently displayed in this situation.

So this can't possibly have an effect on the release of the D&D games, right?

All Capcom doom news all the time is making me paranoid.

This just means we're never seeing Aliens vs Predator. I got dibs on Linn though. And all those compilations that could've been. Shame.

No one likes raging demon inputs being the standard for a super or hard ass link based gameplay, go figure.

I don't mind it and nor have I. And to be quite honest with the Hunter Chain and how it works is that moves of that ilk can be linked into which takes a lot of the sting of doing them on command. You'd be surprised how major that is especially in Savior where characters have that as a safe and major damage option.

King of Fighters? Which most fighting game fans agree is the best 2d fighter out.

Not enough people play Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code v1.07. If they did...

Yeah. They really should've at least made Vampire Savior the PS2 port with all of the characters. Not having Donovan, Pyron and Hutzil is silly.

Both of those games are the Vampire Darkstalkers Collection versions of the roms they used in DR. So not having some option for using either the Arranged Mode in VS or even acknowledging in some form that VH2 & VS2 even exist wasn't the smart thing. And all the options that VDC gives you to alter the games should've been included as well. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they were going for the arcade version so I can forgive but not forget on this one.

.....this is the company that used the same sprite for Morrigan from 1994 to 2001 for 13 games.

Vampire, Vampire Hunter 1 & 2, Vampire Savior 1 & 2, Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service, Marvel vs Capcom 1 & 2 & Capcom vs SNK 1, Pro & 2. I only could pull out 11.

Being technical about it because Savior was the sprite they used for as a basis her & the rest of the cast outside of Savior/VH2/VS2 (MvC2 and Capcom Fighting Jam) you could drop both Vampire & Vampire Hunter 1 because the Savior sprite isn't a 1:1 for either one of those games which would put that count at 9 games. Then her MvC sprites are dramatically different from any of her others which would then put that count to 7.

To be honest the only time where this even mattered was in Capcom vs SNK because of how she looked in contrast to those Alpha sprites. In all honesty if they did a Kyosuke sprite they could've easily done something for her where she wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

So all in all it isn't as bad as people like to tout it to be.

Does Warzard even have a vs. mode? I want to play it, but I thought it was a fighting game RPG. How many playable characters does it have?

It does but with 4 players there's only so much you can get out of that. The thing with that is the Level Up system does change those VS fights depending on who've you selected. You don't get the same fight from L1 characters that L32 characters give. The thing is that you need to not only play the Story Mode but Versus as well to fully level your character up and have all their tools available to you for battle. It does encourage multiple playthroughs of the Story Mode (especially important for Leo) so you can get the best out of each of them.

Capcom really had something in Warzard and no idea why they didn't follow up on it somehow. Again, shame.

I wonder when Mei-Ling will break out of her cameo role and actually be featured in something like the rest of her cast mates?

I bought the game, and surprised I liked it like I did, but not surprised at the "poor" sales.

The hardcore FGC isn't that big, and they are the only ones who would buy this. Skullgirls had the advantage of outside animation appeal- more of their fans will hit an anime con over a major.

If your game isn't named SF, Marvel, Smash, MK, or maybe Soul Calibur- you are going to have a tough time selling outside the hardcore market (and Soul Calibur probably lost that Status this gen) This is espectially true after last year, when very few FG fans are actively looking for a new game- everyone has the game they love now.

The FG boom is over right now, and the market is stabilizing around a slightly higher norm than before. I do think this might bode ill for next-gen, depending on if FG's can be profitable at these levels of sales.

The proper time to release a big-name new fighter probably won't be until late 2014-early 2015 when next-gen has about a year on it.

To be honest I kind of thought these HD re-releases were more about nostalgia or maybe playing them with a friend, not really as alternatives to new releases.

I bought it and loved it one of my dream games along with mvc1 remake

Not interested in what 2013 Capcom would do with DS4....All I want from Capcom is old games like EX, ALPHA, Rival schools ect.

Part of the problem is that fighting game players have to dedicate their time to a select few games or they would otherwise fall behind. As a fan of these fighters, it's simply not worth my time to go back and try the series after seeing how 3SO and MvC2 didn't revive that community. Furthermore without an HD Remix type of balance change I'm already years behind the curve. The only reason to go back to these is nostalgia.

bad gameplay lol
Just give me a SFA HD Collection. Or hell, just an HD remaster of the Dreamcast version of SFA3. Then you can stop releasing HD remasters, Capcom.

Huh? It seems it's doing pretty well!

What did they expect?! (Yes, that's a rhetorical question)

I sent Sven the following PM, and thought people might be interested:
Hey Sven,

You're always as upfront as you can be about what's up at Capcom, and I'd like to reciprocate.

I did not buy Darkstalkers: Resurrection for three reasons, despite liking the franchise:

1) My income and time are limited, so I must choose between titles very carefully. Fighting games involve a massive time committment, so I have to pick and choose. You'll be glad to know that most of the fighting games I purchase are made by Capcom, because I think your company makes quality games (except for SFxT).

2) I'm primarily a UMvC3 player, and I have well over a thousand hours into that game. I've gotten to the point where I feel I'm able to devote time to a second fighting game on the side. At the time I made this decision, two announcements were made: Darkstalkers: Resurrection, and a SSFIVAE update. Knowing that Darkstalkers IV is likely on the way, I asked myself: would I rather buy and learn a game in-depth which is about to get updated, or one that is about to be replaced? It seems like a clear choice to me, so I bought SSIVAE. I plan on buying Darkstalkers IV when it came out despite not buying Darkstalkers: Resurrection. I'm also spending a ton of time playing Monster Hunter 3U right now.

3) The PS4 was recently revealed to not be BC with PS3 PSN purchases. This has eliminated all desire I have to purchase anything on PSN. This is Sony's screw-up, not yours, but it factors into my decision. Why would I purchase a game that I'm going to lose access to in a year (assuming I "upgrade")? I can at least re-sell SSFIVAE and get most of my money back, but I won't get anything back for Darkstalkers: Resurrection. This would not be a factor if the PS4 were BC.

Thanks for talking to the fans, and for being a voice for the fighting game community.

Regards,

Karst

Understandable, altho I could see Pyron, Donovan and Phobos being added to DS3 as DLC...and so long as they're $3 for all 3, I'm cool with it.
As is I have the games as they would be and have been played in Japan for the past years, so I'm good.
I wonder how the Japanese scene feels about this release...

I didn't buy it, because it was too expensive for the amount of time I knew I would spend on it.

Same deal with RE revelations. It is one thing to offer games not many people are excited for, it is another thing to price them realistically.

But they released this game based on their past experiences with fanboy cries for rereleases. So they were trying to match their development process to the level of anticipation they thought they could accurately perceive.

The price is another matter.

Yeah I didn't buy it because it looked like a pisspoor half assed "remix".
It's the best thing to happen to HD re-releases and the IP in a while.
Probably more like Capcom setting their expectations too high yet again (lol 1.5 million for Dragon's Dogma).
Everything underperforms to a company in dire straights. Here's looking at you, Square.

Capcom must be hungry for a surprise hit after all the middling results from the last year and a half. I like to think that it would be doing okay to them had it come out a year earlier when the market wasn't so crowded.
I sent Sven the following PM, and thought people might be interested:
Very straightforward letter. Good of you to write to him and explain why you didn't buy. More people should do that.

It was never a popular title. A handful of people screaming for it on a forum doesn't represent the average user.

Unsurprising. I found this to be a pretty uninteresting game from the demo, and if the franchise's reach in the West is anything to go by, I think you have to give credit for Capcom even going this far.

Add enough value to your product and price it properly. This game missed the sequels of these games, the original Darkstalkers and was way too expensive, so they are morons if were expecting great sales.

Extra stuff like EX options from the PSX version and the Tower Mode of the PSP version would have been a nice addition.

But by far the main problem is it's pricing. With the current content it should have been $7.99 or lower. Jojo game suffered the same issues, and this is the main reason of why I didn't buy both games even if I'm a huge fan of the Capcom 2D fighters.

And then after the abusive pricing of their downloadable fighters and other retro game, their 2nd biggest problem are their unrealistic sales expectations. They use to be too high, so even games who did a good work in both of quality and sales they are seen as 'failures'.

I assume will buy them if had the proper price cut in PSN. And will buy day one Darkstalkers IV if it has the same quality than all the Capcom fighters of this gen. I even love SFxT, I don't understand why it receives all the hate.

I hope Capcom collapses. I've never seen a company blame and abuse their audience as much as these boneheads.

Honestly these HD remakes dont take a lot of money to make I would assume. I'm sure DSIV is still on the way.

You'll be getting the PS2 ver. of CvSNK2, and even if THAT got a PSN/XBL release with online, I'd see the same issue show up.

I would rather have had CvS2 EO:HD than Darkstalkers at this point. Put all the bells & whistles on DS4 rather than trying to remind the west that it exists.

I bought it day one, but I can't say I'm surprised. DS has always been kinda niche outside Japan.
I don't think it sold in Japan either. I've been following the PSN JP charts since Skullgirls came out(It broke it's expected LTD by week 2 of 7) and I never saw Resurrection chart once. I got the screen captures too.
