"Sony learned some difficult lessons from the launch of PlayStation 3, and it is determined not to make those mistakes again. With Microsoft’s silence becoming ever more conspicuous, its greatest videogame rival is slowly, but surely, explaining the philosophy behind PlayStation 4. Many were not content with a controller, a few games and a vision at PlayStation Meeting on February 20th; when we speak to Sony Worldwide Studios’ vice president Michael Denny six weeks later, he isn’t revealing too much more about its price, look or launchdate.

He can, however, elaborate on the new platform’s origins – how Sony’s difficult PS3 launch influenced its approach to PS4 and what happened in the five years of planning that led up to February 20th 2013. He also gives us his thoughts on why Sony didn’t reveal the console itself, and how PS4 will perform in an ever more platform agnostic game industry."

I still don't like that indent that the DS4 sticks have. Why not just make it fully concave or convex?

It's really annoying when he completely side steps a question. Why does EDGE even both publishing the answers? Such as...

In New York Andrew House remarked that the stakes were high. How essential PlayStation 4 is for Sony as a company?

I think the starting point is you go back to when we launched PlayStation 3 and I think it’s fair to say that the landscape in terms of gaming has totally changed since those days. It’s so much more competitive but it’s so much more proliferated in terms of the amount of people who are gaming and the amount of devices they are gaming on. And in a way we have to see that as an opportunity. I think as we’ve said we’re going to be very focused on gamers and gaming and offer an experience that is differentiated, that is high-end, but in doing that we have to embrace where gaming’s gone. And that’s why we have to embrace lots of ideas such as integration, that we are integrating into many other areas of gamer’s lives, casual gamers and gaming-on-the-go as well.

Some encouraging noises on pricing.

He also sounds very sure about launch timing and the timetable of events leading up to that. But I wonder when the next point on that timetable is... E3, I guess. I know it Feb - Jun is only 4 months, but it seems so much longer :p

What lessons have you learned from the PS3 price? Will PS4 launch with a more competitive price point?

There’s plenty of time, we’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.

Good news.

That's 7.5 months for each GB of gddr5 :p

Also they need to smack the marketing clown who came up with 'supercharged pc', it's insulting to our intelligence.

I really like... how no one seems to be vying for credit or stuff like that (they seem to give members of their teams credit when credit is due)
-like how it's Cerny's visions/efforts
-like how it's their Japanese colleagues.

i know there isn't much to gather from all that he's sharing.. but it does seem like the Sony team has some really positive team energy going

I lol'd at some of these answers, especially when asking how high the stakes were. Jesus, it's hard to imagine someone answer a question like that in real life.

So there were no other names on the table?

I think we’re getting into an area of internal discussions that probably wouldn’t be that useful to go into too much depth and share with you. All I can say is that PlayStation 4 is the clear winner in all our eyes.

Party pooper.

That's PR speak for "Yes, PS4 needs to succeed or we will not be coming back to the console market the next time around."

The price talk does sound encouraging indeed.
What can you tell us about the overall scope of the project at Sony?

Without trying to give actual numbers, it did really, this time perhaps more than any other time, cut across all divisions of the company early on in terms of thinking about what this console should be. That was certainly on the studio side very exciting and I was very privileged to be included in it. Certainly from those early consultations and just talking about ideas there’s been a gradual shift – and in the last two years – a very keen focus for everybody in Worldwide Studios of what we’re concentrating on now for the future.
This is also encouraging with regard to having software ready for the launch period.

"deeper, richer experience"

I do wish they'd lay off this sort of marketing guff, it just comes across as a pretentious, focus group, cringe worthy platitude.

I'm pumped for the PS4 without all that.

Oh Sony, shower Bungie with money so that Destiny is a launch title and I'm yours, all yours.

I believe there was a report earlier this year suggesting that Activision doesn't want Destiny to be direct competition with CoD. So no amount of money from Sony would change that.

Asked about beating MS to the punch with the reveal->talks about knowing the launch date....that's a good sign.

I've been talking to devs and internal Sony teams for years and I have never seen them this single minded, focused and energetic ever. Every aspect of SCE is simply ready for war.

That sounds fantastic.

As a gamer, this is what I expect for Sony

Also they need to smack the marketing clown who came up with 'supercharged pc', it's insulting to our intelligence.

If we consider a standard PC to be an NA engine and the GDDR5/memory architecture to be the supercharger the analogy does kind of work (in that it increases the performance of the rest of the 'engine').

Of course just because something is supercharged, it doesn't mean it's more powerful than other things (high-end PCs), just more powerful that it would be without the super charger, which is the case here. Like a supercharged Ford Escort would still not be more powerful than an F1 car.

Not per se... but certainly to less big budget AAA games.

They know that

Some questioned why Knack, of all the PS4 titles shown for the first time at PlayStation Meeting, was the first in line. We asked Yoshida whether it was a gesture of gratitude to PS4 system architect Mark Cerny, who is also heading up development on Knack. Yoshida replied: “Yeah, I am very proud that that happened. Some people questioned: ‘the first game to show on PS4 – is it Knack?!’ [laughs]”

“It was pretty intentional,” he continued. “Mark’s idea was like ‘what about [a] Crash Bandicoot for PS4?’ when he suggested the concept of Knack. We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with.”

Sure if you put it that way, I doubt they're trying to imply it's a supercharged ford escort though.
It's more in line with the 'blast processing' and 'emotion engine' and '64 bit' (in nintendo 64's case) bollox they usually use to cynically pander to potential customers.

I'm not saying you're wrong that people using the term are doing so without understanding it, I was just pointing out that for once, they are also kind of correct.
