Yeah, saw this yesterday. Rumor that won't die. If true, then I'll be saving a lot of money this gen by avoiding the next Xbox.

needs more rumors so Microsoft hurries up and announce the system.

They are not going to announce until they are good and ready. It seems it does't matter to Microsoft that Sony are gaining the initiative and advantage.

Stupid MS.

I am guessing EA and Activision right? I have a feeling both BF4 and CoD will be exclusive to Durango (excluding the PS360 versions)

It maybe a possibility, after all at the start of a new generation the market you ignore by going exclusive is almost non existant, and in the future the things may change..

If this is true hackers will just break the encryption out of spite and piracy will become even more popular than it otherwise would on the system.

Microsoft is certainly making bold new steps into an uncharted frontier, here. If they pull it off, they'll dominate.

But if there's enough backlash....

It seems like it's 5:1 in terms of whether the nextbox has always online or no used games ( in favour of it having no used games and forced online)

Hopefully it's just the devkit version and not the consumer version.

Given how elaborate and contrasting some of these rumours have been (there was that one the other week which seemingly dispelled all of these 'always online' things) I'm choosing just to ignore them all entirely. It could go either way at this point, but we'll find out in a month from now so it's not too long to wait.

Starting to think there are too many rumours for this to possible be untrue. Still hoping it's bollocks though.
I'm actually starting to think MS deliberately plants these rumors so the anger will have cooled off a bit when they actually confirm this shit.

Why are people saying that they're conflicting rumors? All the rumors about the Nextbox I've heard have said the same thing: always online, no used games. I believe the only rumor that said differently was the Vgleaks rumor...

All of the rumors I've heard seem to support the no used games/always online mentality that's been thrown around for months now.

Direct quote from the Durango SDK documentation [released by VGLeaks]:

"Durango will implement different power states so that it can always be powered on, but will draw minimal electricity when not in use. The console will be ready instantly when users want to play, and will always maintain a network connection so that console software and games are always current. With this "Always On, Always Connected" design, users will quickly and easily enjoy their connected entertainment experiences, with no waiting for the console to restart or instal updates."

Judging from the fact that Xing is blatantly a developer of shovelware, excuse me while I bury his comments in salt.

(Although I'm still waiting for a formal denial from Microsoft, and no random pastebins don't count.)

Just tell us so we can stop going back and forth!

Perfect.

And I think this rumors are false because that couldn't be true... Really couldn't be true.

Back and forth and back and forth.

Can't wait for E3 to clear this up.

Wait, what back and forth? We keep seeing this information pop up again and again and MS has done nothing to knock it down. It's not really back and forth or 'here we go again' it's just going on and on continually at this point.

SolidSnakeX bought up a great point. What if a major publisher like EA or Activision has promised Microsoft exclusives if they implement anti-used game strategy?? MS can't be going in alone, they must be making publishers happy with this move...

Microsoft will partner with EA, Activision, or Bethesda (or a combination of the three). Wait and see. The writing has been on the wall for some time. I hope that whoever gets involved with them receives a ton of scorn.

I can't see how anti-used games would make up enough sales to be better than releasing on PS4.

I don't believe those rumors. They are TOO stupid, imho.
I perfectly understand the commercial/business reasoning behind those "strategies" but I'm sure that the market TODAY is not ready.
Think about the PS2 being ONLY digital for example, and will understand my position.

MICROSOFT...there...

That's all good if the next Xbox and the games on it... sell. Hopefully, if this rumor is true, then that won't happen. MS can shove an anti-consumer box up their collective asses.

They might have, just nothing big like you're expecting, maybe a new IP they will push, or one of their IP's that sell in the 1-4 mil range.

Hasn't BF4 been confirmed for PS4? And I doubt Activision would give Sony Diablo on PS3/4 if they were super mad at them. And they even took out always online for that game on consoles when they could have gone the opposite way.

Just doesn't seem likely to me, way too much money left on the table to just ignore a major platform holder.

it's probably what's going to happen if it's true, people have discussed this for a while. there are other alternatives in gaming for me to accept this, so i'll just skip it.

You are making an assumption that all of these publishers want to completely do away with used games, which I don't think is entirely the case.

I really want a PS4 over the 720, but shit. If MS moneyhatted EA out the ass for exclusives, I'll be torn on what console to get.

Think about it in terms of page views. If one reports "Nextbox to require internet connection," it will likely beget more page views than "Nextbox to stay connected when the system is off."

People are addicted to being angry. Just wait til the reveal.

I'm really looking forward to May 21st. I'm going to wait and see if Don's smug face says that it's always-online and it'll block used games. Then I can finally say I won't buy that POS.

This will not happen, EA and Activision would lose millions. Was there not talk of Sony allowing publishers to decide themselves if they wanted to block used game sales, but Sony said they would not do it for there titles. Its possible MS have gone a few steps further and blocked all used games. Requiring an online connection to play a game will not go down well.

A lot of games next gen will be download only. Not many second hand copies of Journey at my local GAME store.

Think we have gotten to the point where people are making statements based on rumours and those statement are being passed off as confirmation.

I still don't believe it for a second.

You can call Windows 8 a flop. You can say that many people rejected it.

But the fact is, it's already made Microsoft billions.

I don't know if Windows alone is doing that but we are all forced to use it and it works well (Windows 7). We fight each other which Windows is better but are still supporting MSFT in that regard anyways :p

Gaf is always concerned about the health of the industry and make great vigils to fallen studios. You guys should be cheering for this!

Why? What evidence is there to suggest that used games have done anything to harm studios? In fact, there's probably more evidence to suggest the opposite - i.e. people trading in / selling games to purchase new games.

The always online stuff is just anti-consumer bs, why should anyone (other than publishers) get behind that?

The fact that Microsoft hasn't debunked these rumors, is saying things. I can't even understand why they want to do this. Specially used game blocking, that is very stupid. And always on is even stupider. Not everyone has a reliable connection. So people with spotty connections are going to have trouble, even playing a "single player" game?

I have a funny feeling that when Microsoft does finally unveil it, we'll be left with more questions than answers...

There's like zero proof that EA and Activision are going to go all in with Microsoft. Why do so many people in this thread believe it?
