Ok, I will give Opeth another try (only listened to them a bit when they came out but never got into them that much). Give me their best songs and let's see if I can agree with GAF's decision :)

how disappointing, Metal-GAF has chosen poorly.

Next OT should have "Opeth is Metal GAFs favourite metal band" as its title :D

lol, their best song is a Maiden cover :p I do like some Opeth but, wouldn't place them anywhere near a top 10 position, probably not even top 50. Diff'rent Strokes 'n' all that.

That's my opinion as well, but since it seems so overwhelmingly loved around here I would like to double check in case I am missing something. I am thinking it's kind of a case of Dreamtheateritis.

I was really into Opeth's first 3 albums + Blackwater Park. Couldn't stand Still Life and anything Blackwater Park though. Insane amounts of Camel and Porcupine Tree worship in their later stuff, yet i love Camel and Porcupine Tree.

I used to be really into Opeth back in college. My tastes have changed a lot since then but I still think they are pretty good(not counting their newest). Ghost Reveries is the secret best Opeth album by the way. Followed by Morningrise and Orchid.

I have tried over and over to get into Opeth. I will try the advice you gents have just given.

Happy that Maiden and Priest ruled otherwise.

Just read this: http://loudwire.com/megadeths-dave-mustaine-confirms-device-for-2013-gigantour-trek/.

Mustaine has either a sudden boner for him or his new label is making him.

Also, it would be kinda humorous if Newsted was on that tour too.

You are both wrong.

Go back and listen to that Crowbar cover again. It's actually even better than Maiden's.

Actually I take my vote away from High on Fire, Crowbar is the best metal band ever and they make the best covers. They put so much fucking feeling into their songs, it's almost too much.

Crowbar - Dream Weaver

Crowbar - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover)

And I am not even kidding when I say their covers better the originals, btw.

Guys, I need recommendations for a stage name now that I just joined a southern metal band who of course all have retarded stage names. I'm the drummer (typically a funk/fusion drummer), so I was hoping to incorporate "funk" or "groove" somewhere in there. Something stupid like Groovegrinder would be great. Maybe a combination of a rhythmic word and something macabre.

So what's a good Deftones album to start with?

White Pony or Diamond Eyes is the consensus. I love every single album they've put out though and started with Adrenaline, but it's your call. The first two albums are a bit more nu-metaly.

Also, I beat KOTOR for the first time today and
reclaimed my place as Dark Lord Revan
, let us listen to Vektor to celebrate.

Edit: To be safe I should clarify that is a KOTOR spoiler :p

Yes that's a spoiler but as someone who had that ruined for him ages ago, well before beating the game, I say that one is damn near citizen kane/FF7/Sixth Sense territory.

Metal-gaf almost got the answer to this poll correct. So close.

Caught the Death to All tour last night and was throughly satisfied as they played a handful of Leprosy tracks. They sounded so good and it was probably one of the best shows I have been to this year.

you just answered your own question.

Maybe for future pointless votes we could try doing what that Metal March Madness thing was? Split up the nominations into various groups (genre/region) and then pit two (or more) bands against each other. That way, you'll have many people voting on a few bands rather than many people voting on almost as many bands. Then as time goes on you'll see the giants emerging and maybe Opeth won't win :p

Holy moly, Gorguts' Obscura album on vinyl is completely and utterly ridiculous. Really lets the bass lines breathe and gives it that extra oomph.

That album in general is ridiculous. Seeing Gorguts live during the Obscura tour is even more ridiculous. Seeing the touring guitarist that is a fat hobo pig performing that stuff live is more ridiculous than everything combined.

Just something I wanted to share from the vinyl thread:
One of my favourite Cathedral albums and I finally found the LP version...The color is fitting, too! Next week the LP of The Last Spire should arrive, too, yay!

Found out there's 3 tracks missing from the Amorphis "Circle" album I bought. I really hate that. I'm not too angry if I'm missing one... maybe 2, but when I buy a deluxe edition and stuff I kind of expect to have most of the bonus stuff.
