As in "Heathcliff"
Heath, I meant in terms of guessing something so far away. I still love the idea though, hence spending an hour putting a list together :(

I wouldn't deny that it's early, but Sakurai should have rough draft roster done before they move on to next step. There might be few new characters that could have added to the game last minute like Sonic to SSBB.

These are allowed to be either returning or new, like the character roster predictions correct?

Yep, New.

i remember sakurai having decided on the complete brawl roster in the first few weeks of development with snake and sonic as late additions. if this is the case again i doubt we'll see mewtwo back even though he has a movie now with a new form. probably not even a new pokemon.

the only thing i want is snake and sonic gone and no more third party characters.

Mewtwo is one of the most popular requested characters.. Much better chance than Fire Emblem having 2 new characters.. And he counts as a Gen 1 and Gen 6 pokemon now.

You're saying this quote from him that's floating around is fake?

That quote is from a Nintendo Power, so it shouldn't be false. But, at the same time, it's kind of odd because most of his other statements about the issue have just kind of dodged it. Most of his quotes just say that he won't focus just on adding more characters, which is similar to his statements about Brawl before release.

That Nintendo Power quote is really the only one where he goes beyond that and talks about Brawl being his character limit in seemingly direct lines, which kind of makes it stand out from what he has said before and after it.

Anyway, we also know that they aren't doing heavy changes to the basic concepts of the game:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/08/07/masahiro-sakurai-talks-super-smash-bros-4

"The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it," he said. "However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play."

The only way I could see a heavy trim of the cast making sense would be if they were going to change basic elements of the game, but, considering how that doesn't seem to be happening, cutting characters for each new addition doesn't really make much sense.

i remember sakurai having decided on the complete brawl roster in the first few weeks of development with snake and sonic as late additions. if this is the case again i doubt we'll see mewtwo back even though he has a movie now with a new form. probably not even a new pokemon.

Only Sonic was a late addition. Either way, Sakurai would likely ask Pokemon Company about their next big promoted Pokemon, like Lucario was, and they probably would have pointed to Mewtwo's new form for the upcoming X/Y promotion. Even if he's just a new form, it's still the Pokemon that's going to receive the biggest marketing alongside the release of the next main games.

He didn't contact the Fire Emblem team during early development last time though (which was why Marth didn't use his Shadow Dragon redesign), but Pokemon Company is more of an outside entity and Pokemon itself is a bigger franchise, so they'd likely have to be in closer communication while adding characters. On the other hand, Sakurai did get development material for Twilight Princess in order to redesign the Zelda cast in Brawl. I think Pokemon's treatment will be closer to Zelda's than Fire Emblem's.

Edit:

Here's a translation of a statement Sakurai made some time after Brawl's announcement in a Japanese site where he received and posted some messages from fans and replied to a few of them, it's about returning characters from Melee in Brawl and also about new characters:

"Sorry. I'm not very smart but I can't tell a lie so I'm just going to write it.
As for the previous game's characters, some of them will disappear. Definitely.

For the last game, we struggled to assemble 26 characters. We tried really hard and unintentionally reached that number.

But, although you'll see characters from the last game, this time, on a significant scale [Yes, this is exact], they will be remade. It is this sort of thing [This sentence is slang, so there really isn't a good English translation for it].

For argument's sake, no matter how much staff there is, with just manpower we can’t just put in everything, and as my own job [read: workload] does not decrease, there is a limit.

But, the consumer’s desired things to be included [There really isn’t a good English equivalent for that word] are weeeeell understood. You will be [he doesn’t give a subject to the sentence, so I’m using ‘you’] happy regarding the adapted characters moving around on different stages as well [The email he is responding to complained about how there are only 3 stages from SSB that are stages in SSBM, so I guess this infers that there wont be a whole lot of previous stages].

So, we will once again struggle to create characters. I cannot promise you anything other than that.”

So, really, he has been talking about a limit of characters and not focusing on them since Brawl was announced. If there were more quotes similar to the one from Nintendo Power, I'd be more worried, but his other quotes all seem to be close to what he has always said regarding more characters.

doesn't she use gun heels though? Also, her design (ugh) doesn't fit at all

Couldn't you realistically say this about Solid Snake as well? If it weren't for him being it, I would've ruled out Bayonetta.

The only thing really stopping them is the sexuality aspect, but I'm sure they could work out a way to fix that up - maybe removing the "nakedness" when she summons her demons or something.

She has a very adaptable move set with a plethora of weapons to choose from, her being in a fighting game is not out of the question.

Being in a Nintendo game like Smash Brothers on the other hand is a little less concrete.

The more I think about it, I think the sexual overtones of the character would probably turn Nintendo off her inclusion, but SHE SHOULD BE IN IT SINCE BAYO 2

Actually, regarding Zelda: I remember there were files on disc of Brawl for Toon Sheik and Toon Zelda.

Given that was the case, I wonder if they would incorporate Tetra into Zelda's character, use the leftover data for Toon Zelda and Toon Sheik in order to make her a three transformation character (in a similar fashion to Pokemon Trainer).

OR make her Final Smash have her "finding" the TriForce and transforming into her princess form or something.

Then again, what would Tetra do? :I Maybe that's not such a good idea. lol

Hard prediction: they're going to replace Marth with Lucina. That and Pacman getting in are the only two things I'm sure of.

Yup, I mentioned that in my prediction.

Have them as a swappable - so when she is dressed as Marth she behaves like him, which appeases those who would be miffed by his exclusion, but let her transform into her true self like Zelda/Sheik
.

I don't really like any of the characters from Awakening enough for them to warrant a conclusion. Between Roy, Marth and Ike I don't see a spot for Chrom. Maybe someone like Tharja? Someone less......obvious?

Speedwagon

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel. Yabuki turned off voice chat in Mario Kart races. True artists of their time.
Pacman is getting in, no way around it. There is no potential future in which Pacman doesn't join the rooster.

Am I the only one who thinks Pacman is a terrible character? Namco should take SSB4 as an opportunity to introduce a new IP and change their mascot.

This is the roster I have for SSBU (going for something a little unique here):

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Yoshi
Wario
Donkey Kong
Link
Zelda
Ganondorf
Samus + Zero Suit Samus
Pit
Ice Climbers
R.O.B.
Kirby
Metaknight
King Dedede
Captain Olimar
Fox
Falco
Captain Falcon
Pikachu
Pokemon Trainer
Ness
Marth
Mr. Game & Watch

Sonic [SEGA]
Tails [SEGA]
Snake [Konami]
Simon Belmont [Konami]
Megaman [Capcom]
Phoenix Wright [Capcom]
Rayman [Ubisoft]
Desmond Miles + (Altair + Ezio + Conner) [Ubisoft]
Maxwell [Warner Brothers]
Spyro [Activision]
Cloud [Square Enix]

Professor Layton [Level 5]
Pac-man [Namco]

This is a third party heavy roster, to help build/maintain relationships with third parties. The Nintendo characters that would have been in their place will be in SSB3D and can be transferred.

Yes, I know this will never happen

You're missing crash bandicoot

I hate him, but I think if Namco are going to shoehorn their own shitty IP into the game that they'll pick him first and foremost.

Ghosts as an assist trophy would be nice I guess.

Characters:

1. Mario
2. Luigi
3. Peach
4. Bowser

5. Donkey Kong
6. Diddy Kong
7. Dixie Kong

8. Yoshi

9. Wario

10. Link
11. Zelda
12. Shiek
13. Ganondorf
14. Link for A Link to the Past (not sure if they'd call him toon, young, ancient or whatever other adjective)

16. Samus
17. Zerosuit Samus
18. Ridley

19. Pit
20. Palutena
21. Magnus

22. Ice Climbers
23. Rob
24. Takamaru

25. Kirby
26. Metaknight
27. King Dedede

28. Olimar

29. Fox
30. Falco
31. Wolf

32. Captain Falcon

33. Pikachu
34. PT's Charizard
35. PT's Ivysaur
36. PT's Squirtle
37. Jigglypuff
38. The New Mewtwo

39. Marth
40. Chrom
41. Ike

42. Little Mac

43. Ness
44. Lucas
45. Porky

46. Mr. Game and Watch

47. Shulk

48. Sonic
49. Pac-Man
50. Ryu

I don't think Capcom would take this sort of opportunity to advertise the dead Megaman, and Namco is already supposed to be working with Ryu in Tekken Vs. Street Fighter (if that's even in production anymore). I don't think Snake makes much sense anymore, not that he ever did.

There were 45 in Brawl so I think they'll end up a 50 this time. I'm not so sure on Ike, Porky and Magnus but I didn't think someone like Isaac, Ghirahim, or Roy would be any more or less likely. In fact, I'm fairly confident Ike won't return, but he's one of my favorites so I'm going to blindly hope.

Really want some Advance Wars characters but with the series in limbo and the last game having done away with any of the recognizable cast I don't see it happening.

Assist Trophies:

1. Mallo (Pushmo)
2. Tempo (HarmoKnight)
3. Sakura Samurai
4. Pac-Man Ghosts
5. Kamek
6. Negative Man (Mother 3)
7. Viridi
8. Dillon
9. Ghirahim
10. Monita

The new eShop IPs seem like locks for AT's along with some supporting cast characters. I think the AT's will get their own useless character like Pokemon got Goldeen, so that's why Negative Man is up there.

Pokemon:

1. Zoroark
2. Vicinti
3. Emolga
4. Gigalith
5. Magnamite
6. Zekrom
7. Reshiram
8. Scrafty
9. Snivy
10. Samurott

I don't know anything about Pokemon outside the original 151 and the first half of Black and White, so this is all a shot in the dark.

Items:

1. The Sacred Treasures (Kid Icarus) (Not sure if these would count as three like the Dragoon Parts?)
2. Power Pellet (Pac-Man)
3. Eggplant Bomb (Kid Icarus)
4. Sprinting Bomb (Mother 3)
5. Beetle (Skyward Sword)

I think Mother has a lot of items that would be really cool. Trivia Cards and Shield Snatchers would make for some funny moments, but in the end the visual of a bomb running after you made me go with the sprinting bomb.

Surprisingly, items were really hard to think up.

Stages:

1. Skyloft
2. Pandora's Maze (Kid Icarus)
3. Patch Land (Kirby's Epic Yarn)
4. Sword Valley (Xenoblade)
5. Pac-Man Maze
6. Rhythm Heaven
7. Boxing Ring (Punch-Out!!)
8. The Bottle Ship (Metroid)

Some safe choices there I think sans Sword Valley. Something from Uprising will make it and I think Pandora's Maze or the Pirate Ship would be the most recognizable.

Will be interesting to see this unfold.

Lucina is more likely than Chrom; she is by far the most popular character in the game in both America and Japan and the game needs more female characters. Not to mention that she can easily replace Marth. I really don't see Chrom getting in if Lucina doesn't.

Luigi (w/ Poltergust 5000)
Link (Skyward Sword)
Young Link (Link to the Past 2)
Mewtwo

I agree with this (still not participating but love commenting on your entires :) ).
Following the year of Luigi they will probably choose him from his only one new dedicated game.
Link from SS is very likely (or maybe they will go for the mature style instead of the previous entry, it's possible) as well as the younger/ttoonier one from ALttP2 seems logical.
Also, players missed Mewtwo from Brawl and his return in X/Y will probably promote him again in SmaBro.

They really need to revamp Luigi like they did with Mario in Brawl. I fully expect him to get a lot of stuff from his games this year in Smash U.

Peach kind of needs a change too. I felt like Link did as well, which is why I suggested changing him into Wolf Link like Zelda with Sheik (and allows incorporation of Midna too) though I guess Twilight Princess is long gone now so it seems a bit pointless.

No one will replace Marth ever. Besides, Marth's FE13 design makes him look nearly identical to Lucina.

Marth is the only FE character that is guaranteed for Smash 4.

Lucina is really, really, REALLY popular. Awakening sold more than any FE game in the history of the franchise. They may not replace Marth, but Lucina may as well be confirmed already.

You are right about Chrom. I see Marth and Ike returning, and Roy being brought back (he is the most wanted FE character for Smash 4, and was planned for Brawl).

As for bolded comment, I could see the darkhorse FE character being Anna. In the North American FE13 poll she got nearly the same amount of votes as Chrom, and unlike every other female FE character, she is "evergreen" (she is guaranteed to make future appearances in future FEs).

I highly doubt they'd ever replace Marth. For me it's a bit of a toss-up between her and Chrom, but I went with Chrom because he'd be a little less similar.

If they want a Marth clone though, Lucina is choice #1. I don't think Roy is coming back.

Tharja would be the fanservice option

Hardly any Smash Bros. fans want her in though due to how similar she is to Marth.

He was planned for Brawl, and is the most wanted FE character for Smash 4, and overall within the Top 10 most wanted characters for Smash 4. His chances are extremely underrated among the NeoGAF set.

I really don't see Marth being kicked out after he stayed in Brawl. He's the main character in 4 games and even Awakening used his name a lot for marketing. He was also voted to be the most popular legacy character in Japan. It'd make no sense to kick him out and keep Ike. Brawl's line up also didn't suggest any worry about gender balance.

If anyone ends up just replaced by another character, it'd Chrom replacing Ike.

Edit: Also, Marth was in the Smash Bros illustration from Sakurai's current staff that was posted on twitter last year's July, alongside Kirby, Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, Fox, ZSS, a Pikmin and a Mr. Saturn. So, he's pretty much confirmed.

That was Brawl, now they have a popular new installment that could use a rep, and I just don't see them using dev time on a less relevant character they can easily pass on.

As for poll results, I'm seeing mixed messages in this thread alone on who is a more popular FE character.

This one got third/fourth place in every single poll:

She was also popular enough to get her own figure.
She is never getting into the game.

The stuff in this thread is not who you WANT to get in, its who you THINK will get in.

Also, there was a user named Shorts who passed along a character poll for Smash 4 among the various Smash Bros. communities on the internet (SmashBoards, GameFAQs, NeoGAF, Reddit, 4chan, Neoseeker, Tumblr, and various other places), and here are the most recent results he posted for it:

Around 1,700 votes
1. Mega Man [Capcom] 930
2. Mewtwo [Pokemon] 811
3. Ridley [ Metroid] 624
4. Little Mac [Punch Out] 601
5. King K. Rool [Donkey Kong] 596
6. Waluigi [Super Mario] 501
7. Isaac [Golden Sun] 492
8. Roy [Fire Emblem] 444
9. Bowser Junior [Super Mario] 440
10. Ghirahim [Legend Of Zelda] 427
11. Palutena [Kid Icarus] 426
12. Chrom [Fire Emblem] 390
13. Shulk [Xenoblade] 374
14. Pac - Man [Namco] 355
15. Krystal [StarFox] 347

24. Black Shadow [F-Zero] 171
25. Mona [WarioWare] 163

My thoughts on Roy has always been that people want their legacy main back than a character who is currently important to FE. We'll see eventually I suppose.

Dat hyperbole. Lucina would just be yet another a Marth clone. Other than Little Mac and Takamaru, I don't think any newcomer is guaranteed.

I'm betting highly on Palutena. I think a new KI rep is in the bag at any rate, what with Sakurai's involvement.

I would be shocked if these characters don't make it in:
- Ridley
- Mega Man
- Mewtwo
- Takamaru
- Palutena
- Little Mac
- K. Rool

I don't think Little Mac is guaranteed either. Punch-Out isn't very big in Japan and I think it might be hard to make him into an interesting character in Smash Bros.

so the next Smash Brother is going to be all about Fire Emblem characters
You should see the Super Smash bros. 4 message board on GameFAQs. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with Fire Emblem. Important characters like Ridley and King K. Rool should be given preferential treatment.

Even Japanese Smash Bros. fans have talked about the overseas popularity of Little Mac and Punch-Out. I am sure if Little Mac does not get in it will be due to Sakurai not being able to make him a worthwhile addition rather than a lack of popularity in his home territory.

Palutena is too "big" in my eyes to get in. Medusa seems more manageable and is a villain rather than another hero. And Hades would be the equivalent of Palutena so that's why I rule him out.

RE: Marth - if they're going to put Marth into the game
why not just put Lucina and let her alternate between forms. Everyone thought it was Marth prior to Awakening being released anyway.
>_>

Can Nintendo include K. Rool? I was going to include him in my predictions but I chose Dixie instead since they wanted her in Brawl. I assumed Rare owned the copyright to the Kremlins (hence why they weren't in Returns) and hence why I didn't think K. Rool was doable.

Niche franchise introduced to the west through Smash Bros just had its breakout hit in the west. People want characters from that specific game to come to Smash.

Spoiler that, our European friends haven't finished FE:A!

If Little Mac doesn't get in, then something is wrong with Sakurai's brain. Punch-Out is still one of the most iconic Nintendo games ever made, especially in the United States. And moveset potential is the least of his worries. If they can make Captain Falcon work, Little Mac should be a cinch.

What does this prove?
It proves that Punch-Out is still relevant, even in Japan. If Japanese popularity mattered, Samus wouldn't be in the game.

Its mostly people who don't want Chrom, and think the FE newcomer should be someone else.

As I said in the Smash 4 community topic, Marth, Roy, Ike, and Anna would satisfy the highest amount of people. The first three are popular legacy characters, while the last one satisfies the "we need a female" crowd while also repping FE13 (and the series as a whole).

Palutena can change size.
You encounter her in a normal size in Uprising and even fight her.
Her Final Smash could be a bigger form, possibly a variation of Pit's old FS.

I'm betting on her, but really any number of Uprising characters could work. As long as it's not Magnus.

I realise what you're saying, although I did forget this part of Uprising >_> But I thought it would be weird to have a "god" playable.

But you are right about any character of Uprising being playable - I do think that Hades, Medusa and Pit are the most memorable though and should be given the most screen time.

Palutena is Pit's size in Uprising.

As for Lucina, she might be able to work as an alternate costume considering Marth's newest design (which was extremely well received and offered for free) looks almost exactly the same as Lucina.

It proves that Punch-Out is still relevant, even in Japan.
Not really

Palutena can change size.
You encounter her in a normal size in Uprising and even fight her.
Her Final Smash could be a bigger form, possibly a variation of Pit's old FS.

I'm betting on her, but really any number of Uprising characters could work. As long as it's not Magnus.

What if they replace Ike with Magnus? I mean speed and stuff. Magnus could work for that.

Here's the top10 result of the Japanese Awakening poll about past FE characters in Awakening;

Marth 2.4%
Lyn 2.1%
Roy 1.9%
Eirika 1.9%
Sigurd 1.7%
Alm 1.6%
Ephraim 1.5%
Seliph 1.4%
Leif 1.4%
Ike 1.4%

Source is the Knight of Iris artbook. Obviously, that poll was separate from the one about actual Awakening characters, and it was Japan only.
