Kotaku Rumor: Respawn's Game Xbox 360/720 Only, always-online, FPS, Includes Details

Whatever, the concept doesn't sound particularly interesting.

Team Nanosuit, Team Ironman, Team Iron Giant. Meh

It would seem that Activision got the major coup, and Microsoft has done well for themselves.

It's not that surprising to me, going exclusive for a new franchise can be a great idea. MS will most likely make sure the game is heavily advertised (assuming the rumor is true).

Unless MS are extremely confident in this game, I don't understand how a new IP could be considered a system seller, especially when you consider Sony's launch lineup

This doesn't make sense to me, new IP's are potentially the best system sellers.

New IPs are the cheapest exclusives probably. And we had many hits. Halo, Mass Effect, Gears, Uncharted and etc. It all depends on the quality of the game and good marketing behind it. An example is Gears of War, quality new IP with great marketing push behind it.

Resistance Fall of Man and Motorstorm sold a good amount. *insert joke about them being the only PS3 games available at the time*

The launch window can be a great opportunity to cement a new IP like this.

I'll say it again...there is zero indication that Respawn has what it takes to make a great game. They are brand new studio. Yeah sure they have a lot of people from IW, but so what? We'll see if the final product reflects their FPS pedigree, whatever remains of it.

Not a CoD fan, but IW was able to make a great game with CoD 4, so that is some indication. Obviously execution is key.

Most of the guys responsible for the biggest franchise of this generation are making a new game, yet there is "zero indication" they have what it takes to make a great game? If most of these guys have proven they can deliver a AAA multi-million selling game, wouldn't that mean there is more than "zero indication" that they have what it takes?

If MS is behind it it will be of at least some level of quality. They'll pump as much money/talent that's needed to make it a hit.

Huh, didn't realise so many left for Respawn. That should put any doubts anyone has to rest, it's essentially no different from Bungie leaving MS.

It's only 36-38 though, plus West is no longer there. It really depends which engineers they got with them, as their game engine made CoD what it is now. Not much faith in Source, BUT, concept sounds really cool though.

Well Zampella is still there though.

8 of the 11 engineers, 2 of the 4 engineering leads, 3 of the 4 design leads, 11 of 19 from Design & Sculpting, etc. Take a look, outside of of the Art and Quality Assurance teams, almost every other team at the old Infinity Ward was gutted

I'm sure the FPS will sell well, and spawn a million more knockoffs in the process. More interested to see how games like Watch dogs and tLoU do to see if they can break the FPS cycle.

lets see... the original creators of the biggest console franchise this generation form a new team and are supported by EA, one of the biggest developers, and M$ who i think has something to do with gaming. I'll say it... there is zero indication that this game doesn't have what it takes to be a great game.

If securing third party exclusives is anti-consumer then so is owning first party studios. There's practically no difference aside from when the studio's exclusivity was secured and for how long.

You don't honestly believe that do you?

First party titles are built exclusively for one system without even thinking of selling on a competing platform.

So you'd say that third party exclusives are fine as long as the deal is brokered before development starts?

The source said multiplayer would support 16 players but that Respawn would add AI-controlled characters to make the action more frenetic and to give novice players a greater chance to score some kills.

I hope that's not true, adding weak AI into a multiplayer shooter for easy kills is nothing short of laughable.

I made a similar point in the Durango problems thread. There's little to no benefit to the consumer - for first party exclusives.
For the manufacturer there are benefits, and these are quite easily replicated by tearing cheques for 3rd party exclusives. But in terms of being the consumer/player - exclusives are either a bad thing - or bragging rights, nothing more.

So we've been talking about CoD 4 a lot, so I'm just curious, has anyone played it recently (the multiplayer that is)? Is there still people playing it? I actually found my old CoD 4 disc a few weeks ago and have been tempted to play it just to see how it holds up.

MP is fucked.

expect more of this. much more. microsoft are going to be completely ruthless when it comes to leverage.

MS is more forward thinking then Nintendo and simply has more money then Sony which is what will allow them to more aggressive in this regard. Plus their internally developed stuff wasn't launch release worthy.

The modified source engine rumor is a bit puzzling. While the engine was top of the line in 2004 it hasn't aged well at all IMO. And to compare the GFX of Respawns game to the BF4 Fising in Baku vid is completely ridiculous given that that demo was running on a $700 GPU.

All the Call of Duty games use a modified version of the Quake III Arena engine, so I wouldn't read too much into that.

I wonder how much they paid for that? I'm actually all for third party exclusives, but if it's always online, it's a no buy just on principle.
