Aww man, Ace patrol isn't compatible with a 4th generation iPod touch. I guess it's time to upgrade sooner or later.

That device is seriously the thorn in every developers side. Why did you give it Retina then gimp the memory Apple!

We'll be dropping support for it for new stuff coming out towards the end of the year I imagine.

See that Edge have deemed Impossible Road the next Super Hexagon. Download Impossible Road. Delete Impossible Road.

You play as Chris Redfield circa 1995 trapped in a Super Monkey Ball. You attempt to artfully fall down stairs while a Get Physical B-side plays in the background. Two-out-of-six thumbs.

Well, the first campaign is free. It's only .99 to buy the rest of the campaigns + British planes, and the French German and American packs come separately at 1.99 or as a bundle for 3.99.

It's free but you'll want to spend at least .99 to get the other campaigns so you can enjoy the progression of your pilots.

Edit: fixed the price

I wasted my money on impossible road. The controls just are not doing it for me.

It's 3,59 euros for all campaigns, not bad. Not sure I want to pay 4,49 for All Aces Superpack, though...

Can't really blame you. It's a weird mixture

Yeah, and there are three $.99 medic upgrades that effectively reduce the "injury timer" (so to speak) by one mission each and heal all of your people/planes. One of my guys just crashed and he is out for five missions. Reducing it to two would definitely be helpful but ugh, IAP.

And yeah, my mistake, the campaign triple pack is $3.99 USD.

4th gen has retina? I thought that was 5th gen iPod touch.

What is the total cost of all the different IAP for Ace Patrol?
~$10 (that includes the four campaigns and the ace pack liveries with a few extra perks). I bought both but the second IAP is only really aesthetic and you could get away with just spending $5 for the full game.

The first IAP is the campaigns. Treat these as unlocks for the full game. It's $0.99 to unlock the British campaign, $1.99 for each of the American, French, or German campaigns. Or you can buy all three (non-British) campaigns for $3.99. I haven't had the chance to dive deeply into the other nations yet, but I believe what you're really paying for is the *planes* each nation gets, and the ability to play as that nation. The mission types look to be the same. (The planes certainly fly differently, though, and there's something like 120 different missions total.)

The second IAP is the aces. There are 8 aces (2 for each nation) at $0.99 each, or the All-Aces Pack for $4.99. Each ace gives you a (presumably) historical skin you can apply to your craft (purely cosmetic) and adds a new possible perk to the pool of available perks (you already get 10 or so perks from the regular game, without ever buying any aces). A pilot only ever gets to choose one perk; your squadron leader gets it at the start and your other pilots get one if they reach 7 kills. These extra perks are completely unnecessary to beat the game. I bought the pack, and I'm enjoying the variety, but you don't need it at all.

The third IAP is consumable. Your pilots can get temporarily knocked out of action (damage, injury, or capture), but it looks like you can pay $0.99 to bring them back into action immediately. This is totally unnecessary, as long as you're willing to accept the consequences of failure (which happens a lot). I've never considered buying it, and never would. For all intents and purposes, you can pretend it's not there and it will have no effect on your game.

I think the cheapest way to get everything is 99¢ for the rest of the Brit campaign, 4 bucks for a pack of the rest of the campaigns, and 5 bucks for all the aces pack. I bought all the campaigns, dunno if the aces are OP or anything.

I must say, even though I was hyped for AP in general, there's something amazingly soothing in a Sid game. The UI elements and fonts just make me feel at home.

I barely saved one of my pilots. Had the guy flying across the map to avoid death while the other guy attempted to tail the enemy pilot. Like a bawse.

Well I guess a true boss would not have gotten his pilot in that situation anyway...

We need to bug Sid to bring SimGolf to iOS. Such a terrific little game. I doubt he even has the rights to it anymore.

Isn't that an EA published game? Likely would make it a difficult negotiation. Same with something like Gettysburg.

Ace patrol is good. Once we get some async multiplayer going its going to be a lot of fun.

WARNING: If you get to the end of the free ace patrol campaign and you don't agree to buy the campaign it wipes your progress. I wanted to back out to see the store and when i purchased the rest of the british campaign and the 4 pack of campaigns my progress seems to be gone.

I don't mind playing it again. Just a warning for others.

My god is Ace Patrol good.

Full dynamic campaign, RPG pilot progression, plane upgrades... this is basically Red Baron 3D meets XCOM.

This game deserves it's own thread. I mean, it's a goddamn SID MEIER game. And wow does it feel like one of his classics.

Yeah, that was super lame. Great game, but it needs an actual price instead of a bunch of seemingly unconnected IAPs. Let me buy the game and then leave me the fuck alone about buying extra bullshit or I'll likely delete the game and give it a poor review.

Wonder if it will end up on steam. Far less complex IOS games already made that jump and this one looks like it would actually deserve it.

This will probably sound really ignorant, but after their haunted house Cow Clicker, I wasn't paying a bit of attention to this. Can't wait to give it a go.

How do you actually buy the campaigns? I was in the "store", and it listed all of them, but clicking on them just brought up a window with a bunch of planes. I could hit a green check box, but that just closed the window.

And the bottom option that contained all the campaigns for purchase at once didn't work at all when I pressed it.

Damn if you start getting tailed and the enemy plane is equal or better maneuverability you are going to get owned. I made a bad dive and it set me up for a world of pain.

If you like 4X but don't have time or patience for matches that take dozens of hours, Eclipse is highly recommended. If you always wanted to get into 4X games, it's a good place to start too.

Very deep, focused and elegant strategy/board game.

Agreed. I can whip together something later if I can find some time, but if someone else wants to jump on it go for it.

Not actually that important
iCade problem: I've completely forgot how to make iCade work on DotEmu's games like Metal Slug 3 or Blazing Star.
How do I set it up? Touch screen or virtual stick? There's no option for iCade and just going in it with the iCade connected makes it work to skip the DotEmu logo, pushing the white buttons, but after that it's dead...

I'm sure I've played these games on iCade before!

2k Games just informed me that a true boss would let the pilot crash and be brought back to the skies via a fairly priced $0.99 IAP.

The depressing thing about Ace Patrol is there probably WILL be a multiplayer update and you will definitely have to spend $ to buy it. Sure is a fun game though.

Multiplayer update to add what? There's already local and network multiplayer in the free game...

The IAP to bring back a downed plane is a little might be a little cheesy, but on the whole it's hard for me to complain about the IAPs and their business model when you can just unlock what amounts to a full game experience for what, 5 or 10 bucks? It's not like they're offering a $99.00 IAP to fuel your planes that runs out in a week. They've been more than fair.
