Capcom: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies hitting the West [Digital Only Confirmed]

It smells off. Does anybody really believe this game wouldn't outsell many of the other western 3DS cartridge releases this year? Even when Capcom underproduces it as they always do with these games I seriously doubt it.
Of course its super fishy! They pumped out 4 AA game and 1 spinoff localizations in 6 years! If physical overhead, translation costs, and sales were so bad why'd they keep 'em coming?? With the new one having voice acting you'd think retail would be a shoe-in since its got higher production values! This is also the first entry on the 3DS and first real sequel in 5 years so there's no playing the "fatigue" card!

I'm mostly quoting you just to compliement you on your awesome tag but in an effort to be on topic as well, I honestly can't fathom the reason for a digital only release. I'll respect the decision and still hope that they at least consider a limited physical run but I don't think it is a decision that makes sense.

Seriously I wouldn't mind a limited print, I'd preorder it right now if it was available, I hate the fact that they're going digital only with this franchise and even worse, on a Nintendo console, I'm not spending $40 on the eshop.

It's coming to the West!!!

But digital only!!!

How much with this cost them? I'm asking as I have no idea what kind of number are needed to produces carts(I assume cost more than CDs), packaging, and what not. Would it even be profitable to do a limited run?

Of course it would be. Do it like Gaijinworks. Limited signups, Amazon payments or some such.

But they have far too much pride for that. I'm not buying it. It may sell 79,999 copies, but I won't be the 80,000 mark.

To clarify, as I don't mind DD for niche games like Corpse Party and Crimson Shroud, I think it's ridiculous to pull something like this on a major series like Ace fricking Attorney.

Sorry, no. A retail release would necessitate changes to code, another QA pass, a seperate submission to NOA/NCL, 45 days of manufacturing/shipping time and significant physical COGs that would require pricing that is different than what we will be doing.

And it is still an exciting announcement that the latest AA game is coming Westward and doing so in a "timely fashion" relative to its Japanese release.

So I'm guessing a significant amount of time and effort.

If they sold all (most) of what they print, they would certainly turn a profit. I think the only thing that could be worrisome is that a limited physical print would cause the physical media to be rare (obviously) and that would mean that the carts would be expensive down the line in second-hand scenarios. This could potentially draw customers away from the digital form (which nets capcom money) to go for the more exciting and profitable physical form (which would net capcom money on the first purchase but not on the later more expensive sales). I think that argument is silly, however, and that digital sales would not be impatcted much by a limited physical run.

Haha, the snoo snoo gif was a great choice.

Even though I'm complaining about digital if capcom DID decide to release Edgeworth 2 digital only I would definitely be all over it day 1. Having that one unplayed game when you've gone through the entire Ace Attorney series just eats at you.

unless nintendo demanded a 200k print run for whatever reason, i doubt it would've been a problem. they just don't want to put in the necessary work, that's all.

Out of curiosity, would you be for a low print run if they raised the price to $50?

i'd even pay more with extras.

I've been waiting for a 3DS collection to get into Ace Attorney, but I don't know how likely that is to happen. Think this would be a good one to jump into the series on?

I've never played this series, but it's a darn shame Nintendo's digital rights system is so terrible. It's really quite ridiculous this day and age to have purchases locked so tightly to hardware. For all the crap Sony and MS get, at least their system aren't from the stone age. For fans of the series, this is bittersweet news. Nintendo really doesn't deserve the support of people buying this digitally. I kinda wanna see Nintendo either get with the times immediately or have their systems fail and go software only, but that's a different topic.

Buncha lies up in this here thread.

You don't understand my love of the AA series, apparently.

This is a fair point but you have to remember, this was a Capcom decision not a Nintendo one. Nintendo has a shitty system but Capcom is the one forcing us to use it.

You have to start at the beginning.

Your experience will be enhanced 1 billion times if you do. You will not regret playing all the other games.

Pretty weird that games like Etrian Odyssey gets a physical release (+bonus) while Ace Attorney does not. Capcom really didn't want to take a risk here, given their report a few weeks ago.

What's the deal with Capcom and coding errors? First they can't release Powered Up on PSN because it "doesn't work", then they can't bring over E.X. Troopers because all the text is HARD-CODED (why), AA2 is apparently too expensive to bring over, and now placing the title on a cartridge would provide "coding problems" even though Japan has retail copies and the series has sold EXTREMELY well?

Nah, $50 for handheld games is way too much.

Can't support this shit! Even if the content justifies it! Waaaaaah!

There are very few series I would dish out that kind of money for.

The AA franchise just happens to be my favorite one of all time.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'd buy it. Sucks it's digital but we have no choice.

People sure are expecting too much out of capcom these days.

Was I the only one that thought the odds of the west getting aa5 any time before 2015 slim?

A retail version never even came to my mind in any form.

Don't forget that offline co-op play on SFxT Xbox is "impossible", lol. Capcom really does love lying, and they've done it a lot in the past. I wouldn't start believing them now.

This sort of reminds me of the Bayonetta 2 chaos.

"It isn't coming out in the format I want, so I won't buy it! But I want it so badly!"

If you want it that badly, buy it, regardless of how it's released. Are your principles really worth more than paying for a $40 game that you most likely have been looking forward to for over 5 years? Stop being so stubborn and compromise. This series is not in the position for people to start protesting it over something as petty as a digital download. Bad sales will kill the series, so if you want to see this series continue in the West, just bite the bullet for this one.

Only you can buy and keep Bayonetta 2 when you get over the platform.

"No because it's too much for a handheld game wah wah"

Unless they give you a limited edition you can sell for triple to late saps.

Some of you guys need to realize that the real enemy of Western Ace Attorney fans is Capcom of Japan and not Capcom as a whole. They are the ones who decided against AAI2 and shot down a 3DS collection. CoJ sees AA as a huge investment in Japan but little to nothing in the West.

I spent quite a bit last year getting American copies of the Ace Atorney games, that was well before the reprinted copies went down in price, they're available for a very reasonable price.
With that said, I'm not lying when I claim I'd get a copy of localized AA5 for $60, Japan's even getting a limited edition, what do we get? Digital only!! WOOHOOO!!

People that were begging for Investigations 2 said they would accept a dd release. Now thats not good enough for AA5? Would rather have this than nothing at all.

We'd be fine with a DD release of AAI2 because that seems like the only option, AA5 is different though, Capcom never hinted at a digital only release for the West, it's caught us off guard, we all thought it was a given it was coming in both retail and eshop.

really? AAI2 is a no show. AA HD has been delayed from fall 2012 to June 2013. AA vs Layton is a no show.

AA5 being a no show is not unlikely even if Sven promises so lol.

AAI2 is an announced no show. AA vs. Layton a) has nothing to do with capcom and b) is probably going to be next year. Level-5 doesn't want it interfering with the end of their second trilogy, no shame there.

Whether people believe it or not, Sven says he's still pushing for AAI2.
