Gears 1 is one of the best games of all time, arguable the best TPS of all time, or at least right up there. I agree with others that Gears isn't overdone, it's that Judgment seemed like too little too soon.

MS should let Gears of War series take a rest. What we need are new IPs.

Gears could even go multi-platform next generation. Especially after the lackluster sales of the most recent installment.

Gears 1 blew my socks right off. But Gears 2 and 3 already felt like just more of the same. As does GoW:J.

Same problem with Killzone and God of War. Halo 4 certainly felt a little more fresh than the previous installments, but still could have done with being more revolutionary than evolutionary.

I really enjoyed judgment but I agree. I would like to play a Pendulum Wars game though. So a spin off series, maybe culminating in E Day.

But what would really float my boat next week Unreal-wise is a new UT game. Screw tech demos.

I'm hoping for this. If not Tuesday then at E3.

I'm hoping for a Samaritan/Infiltrator game (those could comfortably fit within the same universe).

That doesn't make it a 'must have' that everyone should have, like a phone or a tablet/PC.

Not even slightly in the same ball-park. Also worth considering that my Panasonic VT65 TV has Skype and a camera built-in and most Samsung & Panasonic Smart TVs are going to this road (probably the rumoured Apple TV too).

I could give you a phone (although smartphones are debatable), but I don't see how tablets are must-have devices, functionality-wise.

Regardless, you could easily make a console appealing to those people, depending on what you have to offer.

5 days man, can't believe it. It's been so damn long. What a ride.

...but still no leaks

Need dem leaks man..

Gears is great but yeah, needs a rest for a bit, especially so soon after Judgment. Halo can be announced with impunity as it's almost entirely fatigue-proof though.

I do think it's more likely they show off a new IP or two along with COD at the reveal.

Please tell me, how could you easily make a console appealing to those people who aren't all that interested in gaming?

On-demand TV? Either they have it already built in to their satellite/cable box or their Smart TV. Or they can buy a cheap media box ($49+) if not.

Skype? They likely have a smart-phone, tablet or perhaps functionality built in to their TV.

Internet browsing? Better on anything than a TV.

For launch they need to let Gears rest, they should release it a year in though. Just like Gears 1, let it get away from launch game "faults" and let the hardware be more familiar ground.

Do we expect MS to change hardware specs and maybe ammount of memory?
I mean they are 2,5 months behind Sony with their announcment. Any thoughts?

A good 2 or 3 years for the next Gears imo. Let the hype for the series build again. Enough time for a new Gears game to be welcomed and enough time for it to feel fresh again.

I just really, really hope we don't go through the same cycle of CoD/BF/Gears/Uncharted/Halo/Killzone/etc etc again next generation. Tiresome.

Nothing has been set in stone. I know that's "yeah, duh," but that's how I've felt the whole time about these rumors. I know there have been multiple places reporting on similar specs, but I've come to not trust these sites in the slightest, especially places that are willing to use Pastebin as a legitimate source. No research, just thinking that a Pastebin post is good enough and reliable enough for their standards.

I'm waiting until the 21st or E3 to know what really is inside this new box. Trying to decipher what rumors are real at this point is futile, in my opinion.

People also asked why anyone would buy a tablet when they could get a faster laptop that was equally portable. And yet they're destroying the traditional PC market.

Hype is getting to me. I was planning on waiting a year before getting anything new so I could get through my current gen backlog. But... :p

Edit:

I've already seen some people say as much that having these Xbox avatars tells them how serious they can take someone's opinion :/

As pach man said, it does not matter when the big two annouce, people are going to have between E3 and november which platform they want.

marketing around in the launch window is going to be far more important then the time of annoucment.

Its going to be interesting who is going to have the most adverts, if the new xbox has as much ads as windows phone,8 and surface, its going to be tuff for sony to match that level of exposure

I wonder if they'll show much in the way of games? Maybe they'll give an outline of the features of the new console and save the games for e3, showing a few things but nothing too overwhelming on tuesday's event, a bit like how the PS4 reveal went?

I'm still pretty open as to which console I adopt as my main machine since none of this gens exclusives on either system getting sequels would be enough to sway me (plus I'll get both eventually, probably). If microsoft provide decent BC and there aren't any huge negatives I might just continue on xbox for convenince since my friends are all on there.

Who knows? And that's assuming the leaked specs were real, or final. The services are going to be more important than the hardware anyway, they could get away (or get by) with a weaker box.

ppl who think the xbox avatar thing is a sign of fanboyness, take gaming way to seriously, I think not joining in the fun is like being a humbug at christmas

People tend to be jerks. It's just good fun.

If the Kinect launch is any indication, Microsoft will come out guns blazing.

Yeah, I mean we all want everything to be awesome. It doesn't have to be a zero-sum game. It 's all in good fun.

So why did people buy tablets? Surely their old laptops could've done all that and more? Why did 20+ million people get Kinect? Why the hell did 90 million people, a large chunk of which are "not all that interested in gaming" get a Wii? Why 20+ million of Wii Fits? Surely they could've exercised just fine without it? Come on now, it's not so black and white and you know it.

I think the specs will almost 1:1 match the earlier leaked specs, nothing significantly different.

Also expect Microsoft just to say "The new Xbox is immensely powerful with a custom designed AMD APU, 8GB of ram, and special ultra fast memory." And just leave it at that.

Which would be lame-ish. But if the specs war can't be won, it's an understandable move.

People also asked why anyone would buy a tablet when they could get a faster laptop that was equally portable. And yet they're destroying the traditional PC market.

Because a faster laptop is, in reality, neither equally portable or convenient for the average consumer. Whether we're factoring in the touch screen, battery life, easy-install app eco-system, reliability and always-on nature of a tablet. An iPad, just works. You pick it up and start using it instantly. That's the reason for their popularity.

If the media functionality of consoles was going to have the same effect, we'd already be seeing PS3 and 360 selling like tablets.

I think the mistake there is in thinking there's a 'specs war' at all.

There really isn't. This isn't the 90s. Both Sony and Microsoft will have had the opportunity to make $1000 uber-powerful boxes, but there's so much more than needs to be considered. Obviously additional functionality adds to the cost (Kinect, touchpads on controllers, 2x HDMIs for TV overlay functions etc etc). But there's also form-factor and power consumption to consider. If Microsoft wants the next Xbox to be an always-on PVR, having monster-specs will only make the box larger, more power hungry and more hot. Not ideal for the type of box they're aiming for.

Your average family isn't going to want a massive and noisy Xbox-sized box under their TV. It's not going to be as appealing to them as the tiny form-factor of the Apple TV for example.

Did anyone say anything about consoles selling like tablets? I don't think so.

Not as such. I just said that then. But DopeyFish implied that consoles being expensive doesn't matter, because iPads and iPhones are expensive. I argued that was a pointless comparison.

Then you mentioned that you could 'easily' make the console appealing to those same people. I'm arguing that it isn't easy at all to win over that market, given the competition Durango already faces before launch, even from the 360 itself.

And I'm still waiting to hear how you would easily make the console appealing to those people.

Yeah the specs talk is getting really tiresome at this point so let's just wait and talk about specs after MS announces them.

A new Infiltrator demo will be extremely cool but I think I prefer what we've seen from Samaritan - I just love Blade Runner so much I guess. :p
Either would be awesome...and I expect one. :)

It has to be so hard to make a game out of a tech demo. Sure, Samaritan looks amazing, but maybe it's harder to create an actual game like that then we realize. That always seems to be the problem with tech demos. They make pretty CG movies (for the time), but sometimes they wouldn't make a great game.

I think there could be an amazing game in that Samaritan universe though.

What I am implying is that there is definitely a huge market there not being tapped

Console makers have to grow out of hardcore -> casual

People like different things and are lured by different things

That doesn't mean that they only buy the things the were lured with, so by keeping casual audience at the tail end... You are losing a lot of sales. Not just by content, but also through word of mouth sales...

People tend to forget how much consoles cost now relative to how much people make vs how much consoles used to cost.

Consoles are easily capable of hitting 500 million - 1 billion market share, but they keep positioning them poorly.

Woah, I totally missed the Infiltrator demo. Thanks everyone who linked to it.
Looks interesting I must say..

However, what ever happened with Samaritan?
Nothing new?

Seems to be just a cool tech demo that looked good at this point. It was for Unreal Engine 3, not 4, so I'm guessing it's over and done with.

Do you guys think these Xbox avatars will get us labeled as fanboys?

Its about time we got some positive xbox threads, and hype. MS don't help themselves, i'll admit, but the place is getting very pro PS3/PS4. I have a PS3 and am hyped for PS4, doesn't mean we can't have some excitement over what MS are doing too.

What's killing me is the fact that I'm used to something leaking and it's not. I believe at this point if nothing has leaked, nothing will leak. The bright side to that is that on the 21st everything announced will be a surprise.
