New Monster Hunter 4 screens - Snowy area, Lagombi, new monsters

*sigh* it's getting hard to keep supporting the Monster Hunter franchise when Capcom is so cheap they refuse to move on at this point. And it's clear it freakin' needs it 'cause this looks gross.

Hopefully the game is alright and not a step back, but I think this is the last MH game I buy until they finally bring us a new engine on fresh hardware that can compete.

They're really moving on with MH4 in fact: online on handheld, new moves, bigger areas, an actual plot, many villages as hub and not just one.

There's always new moves and bigger areas, I want a non-gross looking game to accompany it at this point. (And I was playing MH online on PS2, you want me to celebrate that experience on a handheld?) I know this might offend some sensibilities, oh nos graphics whores and whatnot, but it's a hugely important element of a videogame that is constantly being overlooked in this massively successful franchise.

I am one of the biggest MH players on this forum and even I am getting tired of it. Online looks good though. Frontier 5 was a cute update but didnt keep me like the other updates. Online will hopefully rekindle my love for Frontier. HR999 FTW

New moves seem to take a big leap forward in battles, though, and if you followed the news you surely know this. As for areas, it's the same; it seems this time we won't have micro-areas connected with each other, but wider areas to begin with.

OP is missing some shots.

I see they are being more careful with MH4, when they announced MH3U we could see hunters sporting equips from monsters not yet announced, lol.

I didn't even see these on the website. I just looked at all the ones that said "Up!" again too. Where were they?

Not a single thing you have said disputes what I was taking issue of. I am taking issue with how ugly the games look at this point, adding new moves and bigger areas does not address these issues. I expect new moves and larger scale with almost any sequel I get on Earth, the same as I expect substantive visual improvements over time. We've been hovering so long with the MH franchise on systems that are in the general arena of the PS2-Xbox-Gamecube gen that honestly I've grown tired of it, and I played the series since the first iteration.

I will be getting this, but if they don't move on with Monster Hunter 5, that's the last MH game I get.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
You think MH5 has a chance to be on a system other than 3DS as its baseline? Just give up now if that's so important to you.

Not that I think they can't improve the textures while keeping it on 3DS but you spoke of a ballpark or whatever there, better textures wouldn't move it past it.

Anyway, I think it definitely counts as an also visual improvement that the ground is more complex now, it's just not something that you appreciate in screens, but will do when playing it and having the varied elevation.

Oh ok, I think the game looks nice on 3DS though, but that's just my humble opinion. I just can't wait playing such a glorious and rich game.

Dunno bout you guys but me and my JP 3DS is so excited for this. Hopefully, a demo will be made available soon!

To the haters, just don't play it. Simple as that. :p

Yup. Get the best screens they release, full of photoshop, and say the game looks good. Take a look at the first page.
So you think they photoshopped some screens you think are too good to be real but didn't photoshop the rest screens you think look bad and are a more accurate representation of the game. Okay...

The only screens with obvious enhancements are the handful of environment showcase screens each area has that are in higher resolution, the rest don't appear to have any enhancements.

Granted 3 of those 4 are most likely from monster intro scenes but all they seem to add is some DOF, not better textures, shadows, AA or anything else as the flaws are still evident.

But hey, good on the game that it's so great looking it makes you think it's "full of photoshop" just because of some camera angles/setup, I guess.

Nice, I've always hoped for more insect themed Monsters. This is great news.

I'm glad they include old Monsters. They should only ever add to the number, never take away from it. Shouldn't be hard as the graphics never change much since ps2. I'm ok with that.

It'd just be nice to have all the Monsters ever in one game. Hopefully when the upgraded "Ultimate" version comes to Wii U and to the West it is the biggest MH title ever.

Lagombi is so boring.

Meh, you gotta show off the small fries before you bring out the big guns.

I'm not sure how it's a huge element unless the graphics impede your ability to understand what you're seeing on the screen.

Beautiful graphics won't make MonHun better. Most fans of the series have already proved that by continuing to buy the games in droves, no matter the graphical setbacks.

Hopefully MH5 lands on PS4. After playing and loving Dragons Dogma and the Souls series, I'm intrigued by this game

It's nothing like either of those games, but that doesn't mean you won't like it.

This game does not screenshot well.

I'm not worried since I played MH3U on my friend's 3DS and it looked amazing, the depth added by the 3D was pretty mind blowing too.

Man, I'm with you on that, that is one of the things that annoys me, I always don't want to cut frames. Do you use Photoshop? If so, what time delay do you put for gifs? I always put 0.03 since that seems to be what results in the closest in gifs looking like that.

Yeah, 30ms delay gets you 33.33fps GIFs, which is a little more than a 10% speedup if you have a 30fps source and leave all the frames intact. The next best option that helps keep file sizes down is to cull 1/6 of the frames from 30fps source material and use a frame delay of 40ms for original playback speed at 25fps, thought it can come at the cost of a little judder.

Also, I use Jasc Animation shop. It's dated software, but it has some nice GIF-specific features, Photoshop is expensive and I've been lazy about learning how to do it in GIMP.

All right, thanks for confirming that, I wasn't really sure if that is how it worked.

I only use Photoshop because I gotten it at a discount through my school by taking a digital art class (I was terrible at it :lol).

Muddy textures aside, I really like the look of the maps. They look more dynamic and just interesting visually. Like the ice one.

Why would you be forced to play any games? There are so many platforms and games to choose from today, so it is easy to find something that suits one's interest :)

He's one of those people that thinks that MH has only recently become great even though it's pretty much the same game that it was in 2005, so the opinion about being forced into anything pretty much goes along with that.

I would at this point be more excited if they were going to fix the stupid storage box inventory system.

I won't be fooled again. I'm playing MH3U now and that game is decent but not exactly the best looking game either. Hopefully Capcom cleans up some of this because insofar I'm not impressed and will probably wait for the price cut before I pick up MH4.

Actually, I've been playing MH since the firs one on PS2, bought one on PSP, and the Wii one. I think this one is introducing many interesting gameplay ideas and I'm curious to see how they will work.

Game still looks like butt in screenshots and will surely have many of the same "archaic" mechanics the series is known for, and I am buying the hell out of it as soon as it's available in North America.

If it's any consolation, it looks pretty alright in motion.

Wow it looks so good in motion.

Yeah because all the new things they're doing with the gameplay do not matter at all compared to how it looks.

Also, not sure what you expect from a 3DS (or are you playing on WiiU?) title but MH3U is top tier visuals for that platform.

Lagombi is awesome, fuck the haters. :D

And yes, beautiful graphics will make MonHun better. The fanbase keeps buying it thanks to the excellent core gameplay (yes, I am part of the problem :D), but that doesn't prove shit about the graphics. Even if MH3U is still based on the PS2 era assets like every other game in the series, at least it's got a very clean IQ, which helps out a lot. Not so, here. There's a reason every MonHun 4 thread gets these comments, and it's not 3DS or MonHun hate. Quite the opposite, actually. I agree with Amirox that a proper overhaul is needed to keep up with the advances in tech since 2004. 5th generation, you're our only hope!

Also, don't get me started on the terrible UI, that's a whole other area they need to overhaul. So many basic mistakes, I wonder how professional UI designers from Japan can continue to get it this wrong (hello Nintendo). Please, hire some outside talent if that's what's necessary to create a competent interface.

Just wanted to say that the shots on

don't look nearly as bad as these super compressed ones.

Are the shots in the OP from the site too or from Famitsu (who kill pretty much any screen from any game because their compression is atrocious)?

They're all from the site, you just posted the area beauty shots which are higher resolution than the 3DS screen and not using the normal character camera which brings the low resolution ground textures up close.

Holy hell really? I mean, all the screenshots look bad but those four in particular are disgusting. I kinda wish I never played a Vita so the 3DS wouldn't look so bad in comparison.

drama queen :p
(I wish I never played a vita so I could still believe people on the internet telling me that its games look vastly superior. for the most part, in my eyes, they don't)

I see nothing wrong with these shots. I know the game looks great in motion and I know those will also look great in motion. It's about seeing the bigger picture here.
Seems like a lot of people sadly lost their ability to do so.
What it all comes down to is simple: I play games, I don't watch them.

They'd be crazy to only release this on handhelds in the west. Well, if this ever comes out in the west at all.

Well apparently MH3U Wii U hasn't even surpassed Nintendoland retail sales (yes that garbage they GAVE AWAY with the deluxe)

Seriously I don't know what is wrong with people.

Am I the only one that thinks it's likely they'll put out a Wii U version if this does well?

I'd rather wait for that (plus a Wii U price drop hopefully).

I fully expect to see a simultaneous Wii U/3DS launch when it finally comes over here.

The problem is how long that'll take. They might want to give MH3U some time to stretch its legs, especially on Wii U. Still no way they will make us sit through another drought like we just endured.

why should it have to surpass nintendoland?
I can't speak for the us, but I know it sold great all over europe, especially on the 3ds, even without online. shibata himself apologised for shortages in retail. there is NO WAY noe would pass on 4. noa might, but thats not my problem.

3 years between MHTri and MH3U. I doubt we will see that kind of drought again either.

Honestly as a Vita and WiiU owner and fan of the Yakuza series as well as a person who was really interested in FF Type Zero and Bravely Default, I've hit the point where I simply assume that nothing I want from japan will be localized or come out at all in general.

Until MH3U was announced I was convinced that Capcom would skip that game for NA and we'd be waiting for MH4, I'm pretty far from an optimist. But just observing the situation it's highly unlikely we're in for another 3 year wait. Specifically Capcom's comments regarding the series' future in NA, and the simple fact that they bothered to put online in 4 at all.

Was Monster Hunter Online not confirmed for a western release? I can't guarantee the gameplay will be intact, though. Maybe you've got more of that optimism than I do.
