Xbox One: live TV available in US only at launch, requires separate device

I actually would have been interested in the console solely for the entertainment features, but 1) I don't get to replace to replace my DVR and 2) this thing (plus Kinect) would take up more room than any other device in my entertainment center.

No thanks.

My bigger surprise is that people on GAF didn't realize this. I can even remember other threads where people were talking about how useless an option it was because you would still be tied to a cable company/box.

It's just another layer of menus you need to navigate through. A 400-500 dollar universal remote that plays games.

y'all should be ashamed
So someone made a sarcastic tweet:

And MS ran with it. XD

So to clarify, what they're saying is that you'll need a HD Cable box for the TV stuff to work? Were people expecting otherwise?

That confirms my suspicions. All of the TV watching was faked.

If it's just communicating with the set top box over HDMI or the IR Blasters, there's no way in god's green earth he could EVER change channels that fast. Ever.

I thought that too. No cable box changes that fast.

I can understand needing a HDMI cable box, but which ones work? And is it IP control, HDMI CEC or IR blaster?

Just got an Amazon email:

"Introducing the all-in-one entertainment system, Xbox One....

*except if you want to watch tv you need a separate device lulz."

Can anyone confirm if Xbox One will have access to the box's DVR capabilities (to set a recording and view a recording)?

If so, my husband and I can live out of the Xbox alone and never have to worry about anything else.

One Device to play movies, listen to music, Skype .... and watching TV**

*TV requires a supported receiver device with HDMI output, which is sold separately.
*TV only works in USA

Why is the Box so big if its can´t be used as an receiver and has weak hardware?

yup, totally expected (both the need for the cable box and the US only launch). MS is clearly focusing on US and made a machine wherein one of its main features is US centric.

Xbox USA

I don't get it--is everyone freaking out because they assumed you wouldn't need a cable box, or is there something I'm missing here?

Separate device is obviously your existing HDMI enabled cable/satellite box, but people who haven't been keeping up with the rumors and just watched the conference might not be aware it's required.
This is pretty much what I expected (and was rumored). Did people really expect it to be otherwise? It's still an all in one device if you never actually have to use the cable box.

More bullshit from Microsoft. I'm so stunned. Will they screw us with the one year warranty when it breaks from a known manufacturing fuck up this time though? Only time will tell!

Many European viewers use the digital tuner built into the television, without having a cable box. In this situation, Xbox One can only be useful if it also has a built-in digital tuner (and a way to plug in the cable card directly into the Xbox).

Well that should be obvious. You just control it from the 1. I would hate to have cable/sat parts/card slots built-in as I don't have cable.

I really thought they would at least have this thing ready for the UK market.

Thanks for nothing, I guess.

For persons like myself that don't have a cable box, boy oh boy was that conference hilarious to watch, what with 90% of the conference being unusable by me. Hooray.

People are acting as if this wasn't obvious when the console included an HDMI-IN ?

The demonstration of the console's features was pretty damn impressive, I thought.

If you thought that Microsoft had some kind of special deals with providers to be able to provide cable \ satellite content from their box and cut them out of the fees associated with having those boxes...

Completely unrealistic IMO.

i don't see the big problem, but i don't also see the big benefit of this feature.

how do most people watch tv today? well they subscribe to a signal that is picked up by a set-top box that then sends the signal to their tv.

so xbox one just connects to that set-top box directly so you can avoid changing having to switch hdmi channels on your tv. i don't really see the benefit either. switching hdmi channels, too hard.

What's funny is that even as an American myself most of these features don't apply/appeal to me. I care very little for sports and seeing as how I do not have a cable or satellite subscription (as they are antiquated mediums) none of these features will matter to me.

Is there a study about this with actual numbers? Because I don't know anyone (besides myself) who does this. Also, no SD set-top boxes will work, because of the HDMI input.

And all aside, I don't really see the benefit. Now I have to use two extra devices to watch TV instead of one?
