Since this is an entertainment box, wouldn't adding a CableCARD slot and tuner have been a better option?
This needs Don Mattrick's face on it! Even though he already resembles him.
This is the most shameful console announcement of history.

Say again? This is the most shameful console announcement of history.
That confirms my suspicions. All of the TV watching was faked.
If it's just communicating with the set top box over HDMI or the IR Blasters, there's no way in god's green earth he could EVER change channels that fast. Ever.
Could always be something build in, it's an it's the XBox Entertainment System after all.So to clarify, what they're saying is that you'll need a HD Cable box for the TV stuff to work? Were people expecting otherwise?
Why the hell is it called Xbox One if it requires a separate device?
So someone made a sarcastic tweet:

And MS ran with it. XD
From the official Xbox twitter.

This is pretty much what I expected (and was rumored). Did people really expect it to be otherwise? It's still an all in one device if you never actually have to use the cable box.http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/21/xbo...n-us-only-at-launch-requires-separate-device/
Separate device is obviously your existing HDMI enabled cable/satellite box, but people who haven't been keeping up with the rumors and just watched the conference might not be aware it's required.
I don't get it--is everyone freaking out because they assumed you wouldn't need a cable box, or is there something I'm missing here?

I'm assuming "supported receiver device" just means, "your cable box"
Wasn't this expected?
probably talking about a compatible cable box.
Yeah, how else did people think this would work?
It has an HDMI pass through.
Before pass through was brought up, lots of people were expecting something along the lines of CableCARDs.
i don't see the big problem, but i don't also see the big benefit of this feature.
how do most people watch tv today? well they subscribe to a signal that is picked up by a set-top box that then sends the signal to their tv.
so xbox one just connects to that set-top box directly so you can avoid changing having to switch hdmi channels on your tv. i don't really see the benefit either. switching hdmi channels, too hard.
