Major Nelson: Can play used games on different Xbox w/o fee but in your profile only

So to sell used games I have to give my profile too? lol

This changes nothing. People will have to pay the fee if they want to play the game. I guess you can bring now your games to play with your friends in their console...

So the only restriction on account sharing is that the same profile can't be online on two systems? What about playing the game offline? Is a connection required to play games on someone else's console on your own profile? Maybe a unique session key type thing needs to be passed online from one console to the other for it to work so it can't exist twice? Otherwise this could surely be exploited quite nicely?

Edit
Selling games is different because you permanently relinquish your key. Perhaps this same key is what's used to make sure only one person is using it at once and it can only be used on one console and profile at a time. When it's sold, the profile loses it and the key is then passed on to whatever system the new profile is signed in on?

Can I loan a game to a friend? My kids love borrowing games from the library, will that work? What about Redbox? If the answer to any of those three is no, my purchase decision is also no. I'm a huge MS fanboy, but with what I know now, its a no-buy.

This just means that activating games is for the user account and not console wide. We already knew this.

Basically, if you are in a house where there's multiple profiles you will only have the game associated to the one profile it is registered to. The other profiles cannot play the game unless they are logged in through your account.

So now instead of just trading games people are going to trade profiles with them.

I think we can all see where this is heading.

The horrendous message control and the general huma-nah-huma-nah-huma-nah right now is fucking fascinating.

How did they not have their shit together on this.

So still a huge downgrade from what you used to be able to do with gaming, which was just bring a fucking game to anyone's house and pop it in and play.

So do I have to rent a profile from Gamestop along with a game? If a friend lends me a game he will have to lend me his profile too? LOL

Incredibly Naive
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

Or at least I think that that will work (since I think MS would recommend that).

How would this work for the online portion or for hunting achievements? That account would need to be subbed to live.

So this is how it looks.

- You can play your game on another Xbox but you have to sign in your account.
- You have to pay a fee if you don't use your account (so pretty much buying the game)

Phil actually did discuss a specific scenario where you have to pay full price for a second hand game's activation, major. Keep backpedaling though and maybe you'll have people so confused they'll actually buy the console when it's released. Worked for the wii u.

No, Phil said that there is no difference on Xbox One between installing via a disc or online and both will be treated as if it was downloaded. Just like with online titles today, you can install it on any console but the original buyer needs to be online to play it. To remove that restriction, the game needs to be bought again on that console -- just like today. Nobody has ever referred to that as a "pre-owned fee" in the current ecosystem.

I'm assuming you're going to be able to release the 'CD-Key' from your Xbox One/Live Profile, and then be free to what you want with it. That's the most logical way of implementing a used game system at least.
Harrison was pretty clear this will not be free.

It is not like Steam.

You are not required to be online to play games attached to your profile on Steam. With the Xbox One, it does appear that you must go online to change to your profile on a different console.

On Steam, you CAN play the same game attached to the same account on different computers in offline mode. With the Xbox One, you cannot.

And above all, sales on Steam are so ridiculous that unless the Xbox One pulls something like Playstation Plus, any comparison to Steam is moot.

This is how Steam has worked for the past X years. If I sign into my Steam account on another computer, I can play my games on that computer. I sign out and they go away.

Keep in mind, I don't like it for my console games, but it's just Steam's model with some form of selling games.

That's basically the way the Xbox works now for digital titles right?

And Xbox One games boxed games are basically digital games anyways since you have to install to play them.

Wow, MS really does want a piece of EVERYTHING. No used games except through them, and no lending games unless you want to give someone your account information.

Unbelievable.

Because of all the hysteria I haven't been able to ask, but is this system any different than the PC or Steam?

I never play PC/Steam games so I don't know how sharing/lending/reselling works on PC today.

I assume with Xbox One you can use the game on any system as long as you login to your MS Account. MS said they have about 1 billion MS Accounts already so most people don't even need to sign up for an account.

So I still can't LET my friend borrow my game. I'd have to let him borrow my game and my profile.
And you know I won't be able to use my profile at my house while he's using it at his.
Good job, MS.

Unlikely as that wouldn't give MS further revenue from the sale of the key.

So its Steam....holy shit people overreacted

Umm...what?

You can't play that game unless logged in to your profile, if you don't want to do that, well your friend has to pony up FULL PRICE for the game he borrows from you.

So you're going to give up your profile?

What am I reading?
How does this change anything? I can't give my copy of a game to a friend without giving him access to my profil? Am I missing something here?

So there are fees....but only if you don't/can't sign in with the initial profile that purchased the game originally?

So if it's a single player game and my friend doesn't have his system online, then we can't play on that system?

Shit is completely fucked.

Ok, but treating physical and digital the same IS a major and shitty change, no? Understanding that the account system already works this way, this isn't what people seem to be concerned about.

-Except that you have to buy your xbox from only a single supplier.
-You can't upgrade it over time.
-It requires internet once a day for the off-line mode
-You'll have to pay the console tax
-You don't trust Microsoft as much as you trust Gabe
-They probably won't have the great sales Steam has
-You have to pay to access xbox live. Steam is free.

Etc.

But it has to be signed in and can only be signed in on one console...

Yes but I'm pretty sure that people can have more than one profile on their Xbox One.

Just have one profile for sharing games.

It should work... right?

Heh, I'm not even really sure. These statements are confusing me a bit.

If you want to lend your buddy a game you give him your profile. What's the big deal?

You cannot buy used games for cheap. You cannot sell your used games without selling the profile they are tied to. And if you have more than one game tied to a profile, good luck if the buyer doesn't buy all the games attached to said profile.
