The Wonderful 101 launches in NA on Sept. 15, EU on Aug. 23

Has Platinum ever revealed how much of a budget they have when working on games? I think about how Double Fine said that every game they've made has always gained a profit due to managing budgets and every game Platinum made (with the exception of Bayonetta) doesn't seem like it'd be the major kind of investment that it'd not return profits for them even when it sells not that many copies.

The only game I can imagine being completely harmful for them would have been Anarchy Reigns because of how Sega completely botched the title. Didn't even launch that good in Japan.

I was also talking with @PG_JP and he mentioned something I want to share. Media (not just western, in Japan as well) who copy/paste tweets and say they are news aren’t doing any sort of journalism. They are just doing the same thing that the retweet button already does. Then they take those tweets and twist/spin them to sensationalize, or cover the fact that they haven’t done any actual reporting.

Some consecutive Tweets from Inaba on the 2nd of May, that I don't think I saw translated on GAF.

"I've been testing 'The Wonderful 101' all day since morning and my eyes feel like this: (*_*). Since Kamiya first pitched this game a few years ago I have really, really, really wanted to see it released. I hope you are looking forward to it...
For 'The Wonderful 101' there were many times when this game looked to be in trouble, and each time I would go to President Minami and say 'I really, really, really want to release this game!'. It's not as if Minami wanted to cease work on this project all together. It's that, since risk management of the job of the company president, he wanted to ensure it was properly discussed. (continued)
If the Director compromises on quality, the whole game's content suffers. If a Producer becomes overwhelmed by the height of the hurdles necessary to overcome in order to release the game, it may as well be as if the project never existed from the start. It is so easy for either of these things to happen. It's at that time that the Director and Producer need to work hard to continue on.
The Director must not compromise. That is the job of the Producer. However, the producer must not quit. Betting one's life on releasing something of value is the reason for the Producer's existence. If you don't have that, you may as well close up shop.'

And of course these Tweets he made in English right before, relating to the Journos who report on Kamiya's tweets about TW101's length.

When W101 has been on shelves for, say, six months, what sort of sales figures should we be looking at as a success?

This seems like one of those sort of games that will be amazing, have a cult fan base, huge metacritic score, but still only reach 500k LTD. That's not knocking the game, b I've seen it happen so often with the likes of Little King's Story, Hotel Dusk, MadWorld and more.

Feels like there's so much riding on this game that I want to know what to look out for.

If the budget was low enough, 500k LTD might be all it needs to sell. Platinum isn't known for releasing AAA titles, and this doesn't look like one (even though it looks amazing).

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Thank you based Platinum/Nintendo for making me use the term Wonderful more often in my vocabulary.

If it goes over 500k, it's done really well. I honestly expect Little Kings Story figures (which didn't even go over 300k IIRC). Maybe with the Nintendo publishing deal they can advertise it and make it at least partially successful.

Yeah, i expect 500k worldwide at best. It´s a shame though game looks amazing.

It'll safely do better than any of those.

That's ok then because I think Hotel Dusk did around 500k, so if that's the level of confidence in W101 I guess it's set to be a success. Pushing a million, or even 1m+ would be fantastic.

The bigger sales for this, the more Wii Us that will have been sold. I've seen plenty of comments about holding off on the console until W101 is released.

Holy shit, this game looks good. I just watched footage of it for the first time since the game was revealed (E3?). Man, I might skip the PS4 entirely this year, get a Wii U instead, and pick up a PS4 whenever Destiny comes out.

Wasn't it even a million seller? Can't believe cing died just because of two underperforming visual novels afterwards D:

Huh I never heard of Hotel Dusk being a million seller, I really doubt it sold that much. It was mildly successful for the kind of game it was though.

Their last Nintendo console game, Mad World, sold 200k, right? Hopefully with this game's wider appeal it's sell better.

I think it actually sold a bit more than that, I remember seeing 500-700k figures going around. As sad as it is, I actually seeing TW101 selling worse than MadWorld.

Hotel Dusk on the other hand, was absolutely not a million seller.

The Wonderful 101 |OT| This week... in your Wii U

Yep, this should be it.

I remember the number I saw a lot before on this forum was 400k, but I just did a bit of googling and apparently 200k is what it sold during its first few months worldwide. If it sold better it was after heavy discounts. Maybe that was actually the shipped number?

And yeah, Mad world was released a bit over 2 years after the Wii's launch, while W101 after less than a year so the install base is much smaller.

Guys, never use imgur, that site compresses virtually every image uploaded.

The box is from Amazon and in better quality since as said, imgur compressed it...

Hold up a sec. Is the black one. ... Black? I see cornrows, and his skin looks a little darker. Reminds me of the glory that was Zach of the original Power Rangers.

also, it looks like hes playing a 3ds

Do each of them heroes on the boxart have their own special ability? If so, I wonder what the black hero would do.

ShockingAlberto claimed it.

The thought occurred to me as well but I thought companies tried to avoid that?

Platinum is bold in all ways.

Hopefully at the end cutscene the red turns out Hispanic and the yellow Asian

He looks like Kevin from Metal Gear Rising, funnily enough.

He will now be known as Zack Kevins.

Hack things I'm imagining.
There is a joke somewhere about his powers

What's the name for the Japanese genre that includes Power Rangers? They're very obviously going that route -- and I love it!
Sorry for the out-of-place comment, I just saw that it wasn't answered. They're called Sentai shows. I used to watch them as a kid, had good fun with them.

The Wonderful 101 |OT| Bomba for Dummies

It has all the ingredients of a good bomba, guys.

theres more than a fine line between cynical and realistic.

I don't think the game is going to sell that well either, but I don't think there's any reason to bring that into the OT. OTs should be celebrations of their games; I don't want to see this one soured with "lol another Platinum bomba!!"

If there's anyone to blame it'll be Nintendo since they're publishing it and it's their IP. however, with that being said, I agree.

There's no reason this should be a bomb. Get Insomniac or Dreamworks or whoever to make a CG character trailer/commercial and this game is an insta-franchise.
