The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

I'm giving in the OP the benefit of the doubt but some of the reactions to the Polygon review within this thread are just sickening. Seriously guys/gals, grow up. Gamespot gave it an 8, Polygon gave it a 7.5. Some gamers around the world (including members of GAF) will also undoubtedly have their opinion of The Last of Us lineup more with GameSpot/Polygon then the other websites. Nothing is perfect, and opinions are SUBJECTIVE.

I can't wait for the week after everyone's beaten this. The discussion is going to spiral and crash even harder than Bioshock Infinite or Uncharted 3 did. I don't know where I'll fall (hopefully I enjoy the game) but it's going to be entertaining either way.

Sure, but coming from Polygon it just seems shady. They currently have NO credibility and shouldnt even be mentioned anywhere.

Sure, people wouldnt complain if they gave a 10/10 score, but that doesnt change the fact that they simply arent a credible reviewing outlet, so I dont get why they should be treated as such.

People aren't happy enough with the fact the game has a 95 on metacritic?

Is this game out yet? Just checked, nope it's not, so how are people arguing that 7.5 is too low or that a 10 is deserved?

After a few months, the GAF consensus will probably be closer to 7.5 than 10.0.

Thinking back to 8.8-gate..... That score was generous.

That 8.8 was insanely high actually.

And looks like nobody learned anything after the TP's 8.8 or Uncharted3's 8.0.

Play the game before spazzing out because of some random number

Seems that today an Italian website broke the embargo, coming out with this:

They retired the review, then some hours later...

I don't know if it's true or fake, but in the first case I would not surprised: most of the videogame 'journalists' in my country are monkeys without ethics and guts. And people like this deserve 365 days per year of shitstorm.

Well now Im suspicous of all the 10s. They all/some taking money for it? Sony set up some score limit?

I am pleased that my $80 purchase is seemingly going towards a piece of software that is of a high quality. I enjoyed the demo a great deal.

People here need to stop giving a shit about Metacritic. Leave that nonsense to the boardrooms.

These scores give major GTA4 vibes. It's more than a little worrying.

The only thing to be worried about is getting your expectations too high based on the reviews. But clearly, the game seems to be pretty great.

Nope, just an inside joke.

Search this thread for "emotional response". :p

I figured as much. It's just that your post kind of reminded me of that part in Signs where they're trying to scare off the rednecks that they think the aliens are and Mel acts like he's really pissed off but it's forced.

Unfortunately, things are different in gaming and scores in the 60s, 70,s and sometimes even 80s can cost people their jobs. It's serious business, unfortunately. :(
So should reviewers overinflate their scores which resultd in every halfway decent getting a 80+ average on Metacritic? To e, it makes scores even worth less when everything seems to be do great. It's not helping anyone make decisions at all and I find it hard to believe that dozens of people all had perfect experiences.

Reading the excerpts in the OP I'm getting flashbacks of ND people talking their efforts to integrate "indie" and "mainstream" gameplay. And that the big developers and indie devs are all in this together. It really does sound like ND is the best development house of this generation!

And if you said that in the Bioshock Infinite review thread you would have been laughed off amidst the hype. It'll be interesting when/if the backlash for this game hits. Hopefully there's less hyperbole than the BI one.

Agreed. I think many will settle down and notice the game has flaws but is still good in its own right. Review threads are the worst.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Yes, those responses are so hate filled that we are like a pack of wolves. We were just saying it is not that hard to believe this game could be better than Bioshock: Infinite.

This is just as shitty.

This is worse than Polygon in every way.

Didn't Kollar also say Forza Horizon didn't look that great in his review?

LOL!

It's a nice out they've created for themselves, eh? Built-in backpeddling in the mission statement!

yeah they did give a pretty crappy score for forza.... i don't really care that much about score, did the review say anything insane?

Or your and others reaction to the review not having a link in the op?

Gaf never like the site for the longest this is nothing new now.

Correct, it isn't just Polygon giving a 7.5 to Last of Us, but rather that it is another tick mark on the site's reputation. Agree with the review or not, Polygon has had a very shaky reputation and this review, and more importantly Author Geis' remarks on Twitter prior to the review as pointed out by Kagari isn't helping.

I'm pretty sure almost every reviewer actually ended the game (it doesn't last that long). The same thing can't be said about GTA4's reviews, game whose reviewers didn't get much into it : ) (if they did they'd discover that it wasn't good at all)

Its probably just an italian website that felt unsecure about their own score and wanted to chime in and blend in with the others.

Bioshock Infinite didn't deserve 10's, neither did Uncharted 3. I haven't played Last of Us, obviously, and hate Polygon, but see no reason to jump all over them.

All it comes down to is that I am completely beyond media/journalist hype of all kinds. I don't believe any of them, not because they are dishonest, but because their hyperbole is repeatedly wrong. If there are waves of enemies like Polygons review, I will agree with it.

Jim Sterling is quickly becoming one of my most trusted reviewers, no MS, Sony or Nintendo bias

I've disagreed with him on more occasions than I can name, but he's articulate and comes across as genuine, which is all I really care about.

I'm intrigued by the comments about the beginning of the game. I wasn't enormously impressed with Bioshock Infinite's first few hours, so calling it better than that doesn't communicate much to me.

Eh..... Something with perfect scores across almost every review site seems strange. I'll have to play it for myself before making any judgments though. Still, from what I've seen, it looks amazing.

Has anybody that has played the game in this thread detailed what they found wrong about the review that gave the game a 7.5?

I reiterate again - I find scores to be a useless metric. I would prefer a review, detailing the pros and cons of the game and what the reviewer thought about it. I don't need some arbitrary number to help me out.

The man is a wild card. You pretty much can't predict any scores he gives. which is why I like him even when I disagree with his opinions.

You're right! When have game reviewers ever been misleading about the quality of a product en masse?

That boils down to opinion doesn't it? A lot of games that get a lot of high marks were satisfactory to plenty of people. With scores like this it seems like the game is great but reviews are nothing but informed(?) opinions just like yours or mine. I think people tend to forget this. The game may be that great to the critics but they're still just opinionated people in the long run.

Man, reviews like Polygon and Gamespot really annoy me. I mean, Sony are taking massive risks providing us with these groundbreaking, expensive games and they don't even have the decency to show them some respect like us gamers. No wonder we're getting these cookie cutter, linear games when the people who strike out, who take a risk like Sony get burnt like this and have nothing but disrespect shovelled back. I'm really embarrassed to be a gamer right now.

Haha love it.
