The wrap up of polygon's review says it has too many conventional design choices and gives the game a 7.5 and yet bioshock infinite which hasn't improved that much on the previous entries gets a 10. Don't get me wrong, bioshock is a great game but it didn't bring some significant innovations in the design.

The funny thing about Polygon was that Gies was feeding a bunch of negative hyperbole to someone I know before the review embargo dropped. I had a feeling their score would be lower after that.

While I think that most game journalist have their heart in the right place even when they fuck up, Gies however really is the bottom of the barrel and in my opinion should be ignored when ever possible. The reviewer for LOU is no Gies

Well make a better argument than just comparing multiple people's opinions.

When you play the game for yourself you learn that the reviewer is wrong about giving it a 7.5. TLOU is not a mediocre game. It raises the bar for the type of game that it is. Genre defining to say the least

Linearity is not a valid criticism of games though. It is an entirely valid gameplay type.

Agreed. I generally prefer linear games as I just don't have the time to wander around aimlessly in open world games these days.

8-15 hour linear games that I can sit down and knock out in a handful of play sessions over a couple of weeks are the best fit for my schedule these days.

I still play some longer stuff like Skyrim--but those type of games end up being the only things I play for 2 or 3 months when I get sucked into one as I just can't often put more than 5-10 hours a week into gaming anymore.

Glad I stayed somewhat dark on this one.

Pre-order placed.

Hype increased.

Will quit skimming reviews in fear of spoilers.

Same here. I just read enough to get a sense of the game, then decided to wait for review scores before placing the preorder. Seems like the game will be an experience as much as anything, so I don't want anything spoiled--which is why I'm making it a rare day one purchase when I usually wait for games it hit $40 or less.

yeah... like those european games where shots matter. Still, i'm reading examples about how you have to fight off waves of enemies and stuff and other modern day game designs which are turning on alerts for me, because I've never enjoyed those in Nd games.

Is the demo available for people without god of war 4 yet?

Was it the CVG review that said there only a few instances of waves of enemies? I hope this game doesn't get crushed for those few instances while Bioshock Infinite had an entire game of such. Though Infinite did get it's fair share of criticisms for that, but by and large the game was praised despite it.

Too bad 10's mean diddly-squat in this industry or these reviews would be getting me more hyped. If anything they make me wary of hyperbole. Still Day 1 though.

His opinion is wrong? 7.5 is mediocre? Man...

The same guy gave Resident Evil: Revelations the same score so according to him they are of the same quality, being 3rd person survival horrors

I'm giving the OP the benefit of the doubt but some of the reactions to the Polygon review within this thread are just sickening. Seriously guys/gals, grow up. Gamespot gave it an 8, Polygon gave it a 7.5. Some gamers around the world (including members of GAF) will also undoubtedly have their opinion of The Last of Us lineup more with GameSpot/Polygon then the other websites. Nothing is perfect, and opinions are SUBJECTIVE.

I'll almost certainly disagree with him however I'll actually argue and talk about it in the merits of the game itself. Even still people emphasize different things. I prefer narrative over gameplay to a limited extent while others don't care at all about anything over than gameplay. It's not fair to compare the reviews from different people in different genres and equate them to mean the same thing.

I hope the gore I've seen during that little montage in the Polygon video review can be avoided. I get that the game is about violence, I'm just afraid it will fail as a narrative device if that's how it is mainly represented.

to be fair that dude was asking for it.

I didn't read what he said but I assumed as much. Not sure why people can't just laugh at it if they disagree (disregard that they haven't played through the game yet) instead of turning it into some kind of an ordeal.

Because when nearly all sites give the game a 10, and then some shitty little site gives it a 7.5, then it's obvious someone has an agenda. Such shitty little sites don't deserve to be mentioned by the OP.

Wrong. This isn't obvious at all. There is no such thing as artistic consensus, and neither should there be.

Seems that today an Italian website broke the embargo, coming out with this:

They retired the review, then some hours later...

I don't know if it's true or fake, but in the first case I would not surprised: most of the videogame 'journalists' in my country are monkeys without ethics and guts. And people like this deserve 365 days per year of shitstorm.

EDIT: it's a fake, soz for the negative buzz! :p

Very happy for the whole ND crew. I've been a fan since Crash Bandicoot, and the studio ability to create compelling gaming experiences, attaching characters and worlds, and to push the technological envelop is truly inspiring.
To Druckmann, Straley, Ballestra, Evans and the whole ND team : Congratulations!

Why shouldn´t it? Bioshock wasn´t that amazing to begin with. A solid 8/10 maybe.

And if you said that in the Bioshock Infinite review thread you would have been laughed off amidst the hype. It'll be interesting when/if the backlash for this game hits. Hopefully there's less hyperbole than the BI one.
